  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Will open season as backup

Richardson will open the season as the Colts' backup quarterback, Nathan Brown of The Indianapolis Star reports.

GM Chris Ballard confirmed Tuesday that Richardson -- who requested a trade over the offseason -- would remain with the Colts for the season, and head coach Shane Steichen revealed Thursday that Richardson beat out Riley Leonard for the backup job behind starter Daniel Jones.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Expected to stay with team

Richardson is expected to remain with Indianapolis for the 2026 season, Jake Arthur of Colts Roundtable reports. "He'll be an Indianapolis Colt this year," said general manager Chris Ballard.

The 53-man roster is set in Indianapolis, and Richardson is in the team's plans for the year despite an offseason that included a trade request from the quarterback. It's still not clear whether Richardson or Riley Leonard is set to open the season as the No. 2 option behind Daniel Jones, however.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Will continue with Colts

Richardson remains on the 53-man roster for the Colts.

Richardson requested a trade over the offseason, but the Colts elected not to move him, and he remains part of the Indianapolis organization for the time being. It remains to be seen, though, if he or Riley Leonard will open as the backup behind starting signal-caller Daniel Jones.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Efficient in final exhibition game

Richardson completed seven of 10 passes for 80 yards without a touchdown or an interception in Saturday's 25-16 preseason loss to the Lions. He gained zero yards on his only carry.

The 2023 first-round pick got the start in the Colts' preseason finale and led the team to field goals on his first two drives, but Riley Leonard came on in the second quarter and produced Indy's only TD of the afternoon. Richardson did avoid committing any turnovers, but Saturday's performances didn't do much to clarify who will begin the season as Daniel Jones' backup.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Will start preseason finale

Richardson will start the Colts' preseason finale against the Lions, Around the NFL reports.

Indianapolis will give Richardson the nod for the preseason finale after Riley Leonard handled the bulk of the work in the team's second preseason contest. Richardson was relatively sharp but still had turnover issues in the preseason opener before getting minimal work the following week. Indianapolis' battle for the No. 2 quarterback spot still seems undecided as the regular season draws near.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Plays fourth after three quarters of Leonard

Richardson completed three of nine passes for 24 yards and rushed three times for 15 yards in Saturday's 34-6 preseason loss to the Falcons.

Riley Leonard started Saturday's second preseason game Saturday and played the first three quarters before Richardson came in for the fourth quarter. Leonard wasn't much better than Richardson, completing seven of 14 passes for 62 yards, but the usage of the two young QBs in this game suggests Richardson has fallen behind in the battle for the second spot on the depth chart behind Daniel Jones. Richardson will have one more chance to stake his claim to the backup role in next Saturday's preseason finale against the Lions.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Remains in Colts' plans

Richardson is expected to remain with the Colts in 2026, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.

Assistant general manager Ed Dodds spoke about Indianapolis' quarterback situation Sunday, saying, "We want to have three [quarterbacks] that can play," Dodds said. "So, if [Richardson] is one of them, he's going to be here. ... Look at last year. You never know." Richardson enters his fourth season with the team but is ticketed for a backup role behind Daniel Jones. He had a strong showing in his preseason start against New England, going 11 of 14 for 145 yards to go with 53 rushing yards.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Two turnovers in preseason tie

Richardson got the start in Thursday's 13-13 preseason tie with the Patriots, completing 11 of 14 passes for 145 yards and an interception while adding 53 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries. He also lost a fumble.

The 2023 first-round pick barely saw action in 2025 due to injuries, but Richardson has been healthy in training camp and played the entire first half, producing the Colts' only TD of the night on a one-yard plunge in the second quarter. His two turnovers could be attributed to rust, but ball security was an issue for Richardson even before he got hurt, as he threw 12 INTs while losing three of nine fumbles over 11 regular-season contests in 2024. He'll begin the current campaign backing up Daniel Jones, and hoping to show enough to increase his trade value.

Richardson will handle the first half of the contest, while Riley Leonard will start the second half. Then in the team's second preseason tilt, Aug. 22 against the Falcons, that arrangement will be reversed. The two signal callers remain in contention to serve as Daniel Jones' top backup and will have their chance to make their cases in the coming weeks, with Jones not slated to play at all in the preseason.
