  • Chargers' Quentin Johnston: Not expected to miss much practice time

Johnston (lower body) is "totally fine" and may not even miss additional practice time after making an early exit Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

With a preseason game coming up Thursday against the 49ers, the Chargers won't practice again until the weekend. It sounds like Johnston should be ready by then, even if he gets held out of the exhibition contest as a precaution.

  • Chargers' Quentin Johnston: Sustains lower-body injury in joint practice

Johnston sustained an apparent lower-body injury during Tuesday's joint practice with the 49ers, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports.

After attempting to make a contested catch, Johnston exhibited a limp, and team trainers immediately started working on the 2023 first-round pick. He hasn't exactly met expectations through three years in the NFL, including his 51-735-8 line on 84 targets in 14 regular-season games last season. If Johnston requires any time on the sideline, 2025 second-round pick Tre' Harris, rookie fourth-rounder Brenen Thompson and 2025 fifth-rounder KeAndre Lambert-Smith could get additional looks alongside No. 1 WR Ladd McConkey.

  • Chargers' Quentin Johnston: Sidelined for preseason opener

Johnston did not play in the Chargers' 27-7 preseason win over the Texans on Thursday.

Johnston joined Tre' Harris and Ladd McConkey in observing Thursday's exhibition contest from the sidelines while KeAndre Lambert-Smith, JaQuae Jackson and rookie fourth-rounder Brenen Thompson each played 30 or more offensive snaps against Houston. Johnston had his ups and downs in 2025 but finished with a career-high 735 receiving yards across 14 regular-season games, while his eight touchdowns also tied his career best in that category. However, the 2023 first-rounder could be in line for an expanded role in offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's scheme, especially since Keenan Allen is still a free agent.

  • Chargers' Quentin Johnston: Expects more YAC in new scheme

Johnston said at mandatory minicamp that he's excited for new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's scheme and expects to be "set up for the yards after catch," Omar Navarro of the Chargers' official site reports.

Johnston said McDaniel's scheme will put him "in the right position to be successful," noting that much of his collegiate success at TCU came after the catch. The 2023 first-round pick, who had his fifth-year option exercised in April, also said he's enjoyed working closely with his new offensive coordinator. Johnston managed a 51-735-8 line on 84 targets while suiting up for 14 regular-season games last year and could take a step forward in 2026 under McDaniel's scheme, with Keenan Allen still unsigned and freeing up 122 targets, and Los Angeles' offensive line set to return to health. Johnston, Ladd McConkey (hamstring) and Tre' Harris headline Justin Herbert's receiving corps, while tight ends Oronde Gadsden, David Njoku and Charlie Kolar will also figure into the passing game.
