Milton passed through waivers unclaimed Tuesday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Milton completed 29 of 43 passes (67.4 percent) for 378 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions across three exhibition contests, with his passer rating of 118.2 leading the entire NFL during the preseason. Despite his impressive play against defensive reserves, the Cowboys opted to waive Milton on Monday and stick with Sam Howell as Dak Prescott's backup. Milton is free to sign elsewhere, whether it's to an active roster or a practice squad.

Joe Milton: Let go by Dallas
Milton was waived by the Cowboys on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Milton was competing with Sam Howell for the top backup spot behind Dak Prescott at quarterback in 2026, and Howell appears to have won the job. Milton completed 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns while also adding 12 carries for 14 yards and a score while playing in all three of the Cowboys' preseason contests. If he clears waivers, he's expected to join the practice squad with Dallas.

Cowboys' Joe Milton: Outplayed by Howell in preseason finale
Milton completed eight of 15 passes for 92 yards and rushed twice for two yards in Friday's 27-24 preseason loss to the Saints.
Milton started and played the first half of Friday's preseason finale. Sam Howell was sharper in the second half, throwing for 155 yards and two TDs. It remains to be seen whether the 26-year-old Milton or the 25-year-old Howell will be named the top backup to Dak Prescott heading into the regular season.

Cowboys' Joe Milton: Stellar showing in preseason win
Milton completed nine of 13 passes for 179 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and rushed three times for two yards and another score in the Cowboys' 34-13 preseason win over the Cardinals on Saturday.
Milton drew the start and immediately led the Cowboys on a 12-play, 66-yard march that ended on downs at the Cardinals' 12-yard line. However, Dallas got the ball back three plays later thanks to an interception, and Milton cashed in on the short field with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Malik Davis. The strong-armed third-year pro then connected with Jonathan Mingo on a perfectly thrown 53-yard scoring strike down the left side of the field the next time he had the ball, and Milton would run it in himself from a yard out to cap off the following possession. He'd subsequently lead the Cowboys to three more points to finish out his stellar first half. Milton may have already locked in the No. 2 quarterback job over Sam Howell with Friday's preseason finale at home against the Saints still to be played.

Cowboys' Joe Milton: Limited action in 2025
Milton appeared in four games for the Cowboys in 2025, completing 15 of 24 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. He added 50 rushing yards on five carries and lost a fumble.
The second-year quarterback saw his most extensive action in Week 18, but Milton didn't make a single start as Dak Prescott stayed healthy for the entire season. Milton's athletic upside remains intriguing, but he's still very raw as a passer and is stuck behind the highest-paid QB in the entire NFL, giving him little fantasy appeal heading into next season other than as an insurance policy for Prescott.

Cowboys' Joe Milton: Tosses garbage-time TD
Milton completed three of four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown in relief of Dak Prescott during Sunday's 44-24 loss to the Broncos.
With the game well out of reach, Milton took over for the Cowboys' final two drives of the game and punctuated the first by launching a perfect deep ball to Jalen Tolbert for a 35-yard TD. It was Milton's second late-game appearance of the season, but it likely won't be the last even if Prescott stays healthy given the state of the Dallas roster, as the combination of an elite offense and abysmal defense is a recipe for blowouts.

Milton completed three of five passes for 41 yards and an interception in Sunday's 31-14 loss to the Bears.
The second-year QB saw his first regular-season action with the Cowboys, handling the final drive in the fourth quarter and guiding the team down the field into the red zone for a potential score until he overthrew KaVontae Turpin in the end zone for an INT. Milton will only come off the bench in garbage time unless something happens to Dak Prescott, but if he were to get a start, his big arm and mobility could give him some fantasy appeal even if his lack of polish would make him extremely volatile.

Cowboys' Joe Milton: Produces two TDs against Falcons
Milton completed 10 of 18 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown and added 33 rushing yards and a TD on four carries in Friday's 31-13 preseason win over Atlanta.
After two very shaky exhibition performances, Milton looked a little more polished Friday, producing Dallas' first points on a one-yard run in the first quarter and then ending his night with a 29-yard TD connection with Jalen Brooks in the third on a pass that required a little finesse to loft it over the defender. The Cowboys traded for Milton to be their new No. 2 quarterback behind Dak Prescott, and this showing may have done enough to reassure the team that the 2024 sixth-round pick is ready to handle the job.

Cowboys' Joe Milton: Another preseason start on deck
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that Milton will start Friday's preseason finale against Atlanta, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Schottenheimer said a decision between Milton and Will Grier as the top backup to Dak Prescott, who will rest for a third straight game Friday, hasn't yet been made, per Machota. The head coach also acknowledged Milton's inconsistent showing during Saturday's exhibition loss to Baltimore in which he completed nine of 18 passes for 122 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception, but he said that blame is owed to the entire offense, not just the quarterback, for failing to find a rhythm. In any case, it looks like the level of play Milton puts on tape during Friday's game will be crucial in determining his role to begin the 2025 regular season.

Milton started the game and played well into the fourth quarter as he tried to secure the backup job behind Dak Prescott. Matters didn't unfold very smoothly, as he took a sack in the end zone for a safety on Dallas' first possession, failed to lead a scoring drive in the first half and also threw an interception on an ill-advised attempt into double coverage. Milton did display his excellent arm strength with a 49-yard pass to Jonathan Mingo, but the performance was far too mistake-prone overall.
