Patriots' Behren Morton: Picked off twice Thursday
Morton completed 18 of 28 passes for 123 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Thursday's 37-13 preseason loss to the Browns. He also rushed twice for 18 yards.
Morton entered the game in the first quarter after Tommy DeVito played New England's first two drives. Morton, a rookie seventh-round pick out of Texas Tech, promptly threw an interception on his first pass and was later picked off again in the fourth quarter. Morton is clearly behind Drake Maye and DeVito on New England's quarterback depth chart heading into the regular season.

Patriots' Behren Morton: Solid in extended action Saturday
Morton completed 13 of 17 passes for 129 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while rushing once for minus-1 yard in the Patriots' 24-21 preseason win over the Eagles on Saturday.
The 2026 seventh-round pick followed Tommy DeVito into the game and finished out the Patriots victory by throwing a game-winning 37-yard touchdown pass to Nick DeGennaro. Given DeVito's experience edge, Morton projects to serve as an emergency third quarterback throughout the 2026 season barring injuries to the former or Drake Maye, but Morton could play close to the full game in the preseason finale on the road against the Browns on Thursday.

Patriots' Behren Morton: Lands in New England
The Patriots selected Morton in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 234th overall.
Morton (6-foot-2, 218 pounds) struggled as a second- and third-year starter for Texas Tech in 2022 and 2023, and even in his otherwise improved fourth season he strained to move the ball (63.3 percent completed, 7.2 yards per attempt). The positive news is Morton really fixed his touchdown to turnover ratio in that fourth season, throwing 27 touchdowns to eight interceptions. Back to the bad news: Morton is decently athletic (4.89-second pro day 40) yet took enough sacks at the collegiate level that it's reasonable to suspect both that Morton is not a threat to run at the NFL level and that he's not even a candidate to manage pocket pressure especially well. Of course, the Patriots may only view Morton as a viable backup to Drake Maye, but even that might be a hasty expectation.
