49ers' Christian Kirk: Placed on IR, designated to return
Kirk (calf) was placed on injured reserve by the 49ers on Sunday with a designation to return.
Kirk missed the entirety of the preseason after suffering a calf injury at practice July 26, and he will now be forced to sit out at least four contests to open the regular season. The wide receiver signed with San Francisco in the offseason, and he was expected to occupy a prominent role on offense. In his absence, rookie wideout De'Zhaun Stribling (shoulder) will have a chance to be an impact player in his NFL debut Week 1 against the Rams in Australia.

49ers' Christian Kirk: Still working on side at practice
Kirk (calf) continued to work on a side field at Saturday's practice, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.
Kirk has been tending to a calf injury since July 26 and hasn't mixed back into drills in the meantime. There seemingly is a chance he kicks off the season on injured reserve, but he could change the tune by returning to practice or suiting up for Thursday's preseason game in Las Vegas. With all of Mike Evans (quad), rookie second-round pick De'Zhaun Stribling (shoulder) and Ricky Pearsall (knee, IR) banged up at the moment, Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing are the top healthy and available wide receivers for the 49ers.

49ers' Christian Kirk: Not playing Thursday
Kirk (calf) is not suited up for Thursday's preseason opener against the Titans, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Kirk will spend Thursday night's contest out of uniform on the sideline as he continues to deal with the calf injury he sustained in late July. Once healthy, Kirk will look look to solidify his standing in a 49ers' WR corps that also features Mike Evans (quad), Deebo Samuel and De'Zhaun Stribling. The 29-year-old is coming off a 2025 regular season in which he recorded 28 catches (on 52 targets) for 239 yards and one touchdown across 13 games with the Texans.

Kirk walked off the field with trainers Sunday. Soft-tissue injuries are common during training camp, as players are ramping up to full speed and in pads after a long offseason. The severity of Kirk's calf strain isn't known, but consider him day-to-day.
