Top Stars News

  • Stars' Justin Hryckowian: Cashes in on power play

Hryckowian scored a power-play goal on three shots and blocked two shots in Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Panthers.

The goal was Hryckowian's first in 16 NHL appearances. The 24-year-old even drew the high-sticking double-minor that allowed him to score his first career goal. He's added nine shots on net, 17 hits, four blocked shots, nine PIM and a minus-4 rating over 11 outings this season. Hryckowian is likely to remain in a bottom-six role until the Stars get some forwards back from injuries, namely Roope Hintz (undisclosed), Matt Duchene (upper body) and Jamie Benn (upper body).

  • Stars' Wyatt Johnston: Scores on power play

Johnston scored a power-play goal on five shots and went minus-2 in Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Panthers.

Johnston had been held off the scoresheet in the previous two games, though the Stars scored just twice in that span. The 22-year-old center got a turn on the top line, officially, amid the team's lineup shuffle, and it worked to spark the offense. Regardless of where he's listed, Johnston is one of the Stars' most important all-situations forwards. He's produced seven goals, four assists, 40 shots on net, 13 blocked shots and a minus-3 rating over 12 appearances, putting him on track to match or surpass last year's 71-point output from 82 regular-season contests.

  • Stars' Mikko Rantanen: Two-point effort Saturday

Rantanen scored an even-strength goal and added a power-play assist in Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Panthers.

The star winger earned the Stars a point in the standings by tying the game at 3-3 late in the third period, but Rantanen couldn't solve Sergei Bobrovsky in the final round of the shootout. Rantanen has gotten onto the scoresheet in 10 of 12 games as he begins his first full season with Dallas, delivering five goals and 14 points -- including two goals and nine points on the power play.

  • Stars' Sam Steel: Three helpers against Panthers

Steel notched three assists, two on the power play, in Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to Florida.

The 27-year-old center came into the game with just two points, a goal and an assist, through 11 games, but Steel erupted for his first three-point performance since 2018-19, the season in which he made his NHL debut with the Ducks. He's getting a look on the second line and second power-play unit while Matt Duchene (upper body) and Roope Hintz (undisclosed) are unavailable. Steel could have some fantasy appeal in the short term while he fills that role.

  • Stars' Casey DeSmith: Falls to Florida in shootout

DeSmith stopped 25 shots in regulation and overtime and two of three shootout attempts in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Panthers.

The veteran netminder played well to earn his team a point in the standings, but Dallas skaters couldn't solve Sergei Bobrovsky once the game got to a shootout. DeSmith has seen little work so far behind Jake Oettinger, going 1-1-1 in three starts with a 3.28 GAA and an .873 save percentage.

  • Stars' Roope Hintz: Remains unavailable

Hintz (undisclosed) won't play against Florida on Saturday, according to Owen Newkirk of DLLS Sports.

Hintz didn't accompany the Stars for the team's two-game road trip and will miss his fourth straight contest. He remains day-to-day, but it's unclear when he will be ready to return to the lineup. Hintz has compiled one goal, seven assists and 28 shots on net through eight appearances this season.

  • Stars' Matt Duchene: Not available Saturday

Duchene (upper body) will miss Saturday's tilt in Florida, Owen Newkirk of DLLS Sports reports.

Duchene is not in concussion protocol, according to head coach Glen Gulutzan, but is day-to-day. Duchene will miss his seventh straight game. He has one goal and one assist in four appearances this season.

  • Stars' Oskar Back: Returns to action Saturday

Back (upper body) will return to the lineup Saturday in Florida, Mike Heika of the Stars' official site reports.

Back missed a pair of games with the injury. The 25-year-old also sat out the first eight games of the campaign. In Back's lone appearance this season, he scored a goal against Nashville on Sunday. Look for him to see middle-six time Saturday.

  • Stars' Casey DeSmith: Starting in Florida

DeSmith will defend the road net against the Panthers on Saturday, Mike Heika of the Stars' official site reports.

DeSmith is coming off a 23-save effort in Sunday's 3-2 win over Nashville. He has a 1-1-0 record this season while stopping 44 of the 51 shots he has faced. Florida sits 29th in the league with 2.45 goals per game this campaign.

  • Stars' Alex Petrovic: Secures helper in loss

Petrovic notched an assist, two shots on goal, four hits and two PIM in Thursday's 2-1 overtime loss to the Lightning.

The helper was Petrovic's first point of the season. The 33-year-old has added 10 shots on net, 16 hits, 13 blocked shots, 19 PIM and a minus-5 rating over nine appearances. The assist was his first point in an NHL game since the 2018-19 campaign. Petrovic has a good chance of staying in the lineup throughout the absence of Nils Lundkvist (lower body).

  • Stars' Adam Erne: First goal in 22 months

Erne scored a goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday.

He tied the game early in the third with a redirection from in front of the net. It was Erne's first goal since Dec. 21, 2023, as he didn't play in the NHL in 2024-25. The 30-year-old is averaging 10:15 of ice time in a bottom-six role to begin the year.

  • Stars' Jake Oettinger: Fourth game with at least one point

Oettinger made 30 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday.

The game-winner came off the stick of Anthony Cirelli, who came in on a breakaway after a Mikko Rantanen turnover. Oettinger has been sharp this season. He has a 5-2-2 record with one shutout, a 2.53 GAA and a .913 save percentage in nine starts. He's 2-0-2 in his last four starts, giving Dallas at least a point in each of those games.

  • Stars' Samu Tuomaala: Off to Dallas

Tuomaala was traded to Dallas from Philadelphia on Thursday in exchange for Christian Kyrou.

Tuomaala was selected 46th overall in 2021. He has yet to collect a point in three AHL games this season. Tuomaala had 11 goals and 21 helpers in 46 AHL games last season. He will report to AHL Texas.

Hintz (undisclosed) will not play Thursday in Tampa Bay, according to Mike Heika of the Stars' official site.

Hintz will be out of action for the third consecutive game. He has a goal and seven helpers across eight NHL games this season.

  • Stars' Oskar Back: Out of action Thursday

Back (upper body) will not be available Thursday in Tampa Bay, Mike Heika of the Stars' official site reports.

Back will miss his second straight game after missing the first eight contests of the season with an undisclosed injury. He potted a goal in his season debut Sunday in Nashville. Back should be considered day-to-day for now, and he could return as early as Saturday in Florida.

  • Stars' Matt Duchene: Won't play Thursday

Duchene (upper body) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Lightning, Mike Heika of the Stars' official site reports.

Duchene will miss a fifth consecutive game due to his upper-body injury, and it's not yet clear when he'll be able to return. Roope Hintz (undisclosed) will also remain sidelined Thursday, so Tyler Seguin and Wyatt Johnston should continue to serve as the Stars' top centers.

  • Stars' Jake Oettinger: Starting Thursday

Oettinger will defend the road crease in Tampa Bay on Thursday, according to Mike Heika of the Stars' official site.

Oettinger has won back-to-back games and has a 5-2-1 record with a 2.61 GAA and a .909 save percentage across eight starts this season. He shut out the Capitals on Tuesday for his first whitewash of the season, stopping 24 shots.
