Sabres' Colten Ellis: Burned by Flames
Ellis made 29 saves in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to Calgary.
The rookie netminder crashed back to earth in the third period Wednesday, giving up four goals on 14 shots as the Flames blew open a 2-2 tie. Ellis was mainly the victim of bad luck and bad defensive play in front of him however -- the final puck to get past him caromed off the back glass, came over the top of the net and deflected in off his skate before he could even locate it. Ellis has started four of the last five games for a Buffalo team searching for some stability in net, going 2-2-0 with a 3.77 GAA and .886 save percentage, and the 25-year-old may not be the solution.

Sabres' Colten Ellis: In goal Wednesday
Ellis will start at home versus the Flames on Wednesday, Heather Engel of NHL.com reports.
Ellis is set to start in an easy matchup. He'll be making his third straight start after allowing five goals on 61 shots over his last two wins. The 25-year-old appears to be pushing for more playing time with the Sabres, but he's still part of a goaltending trio that also includes Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon.

Ellis made 32 saves in Monday's 5-1 win over the Oilers.
The 25-year-old rookie mostly shut down the high-powered Edmonton offense en route to his second straight win and third in four starts. Ellis is making a case to become more than just the third wheel in the Buffalo crease, posting a 3.02 GAA and a .907 save percentage while starting three of the last four contests, but he'll be tough to rely on in most fantasy formats as long as Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon are both still in the picture.

Sabres' Colten Ellis: Tending twine Monday
Ellis will defend the home crease against the Oilers on Monday, Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports.
Ellis has seen limited playing time for the Sabres this season but has been relatively effective when called upon, going 2-1-0 with a 3.35 GAA and .895 save percentage over his three appearances. He's coming off an overtime win in Detroit on Saturday, and he'll draw back-to-back starts for the first time this season. The Oilers have had a middling offense early in the year, scoring 3.10 goals per game, which ranks 16th in the league.

Ellis has won two of his three starts this season, but he's allowed at least four goals in his two outings this month. With an .895 save percentage in his three appearances, and still in a competition with Alex Lyon and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for the goaltending job, it's hard to trust Ellis in most fantasy formats. Ellis will guard the road goal versus the Red Wings on Saturday, Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports.
Ellis has allowed six goals on 67 shots over his first two NHL appearances, going 1-1-0. The Red Wings have cooled off since their hot start, winning just two of their last six games. They have scored a mediocre 12 goals in that span.

Ellis held the Mammoth to one goal over the first two periods, but the home team erupted in the third to run away with the game. It ends up as a middling effort for the 25-year-old, who is 1-1-0 with six goals allowed on 67 shots over his first two NHL appearances. Ellis has been battling with Alex Lyon and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for playing time, though none of the three goalies has yet to get on a hot streak to seize the top job. Given the crowded crease, it's unclear when Ellis might play again.

Ellis is expected to start on the road against Utah on Wednesday, per Michael Augello of The Hockey News.
Ellis has made one previous start with the Sabres this season, allowing two goals on 31 shots in a victory against Detroit on Oct. 22. Buffalo also has Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon on the roster, which hasn't presented Ellis with many opportunities to play. Utah has a 9-7-0 record and ranks 15th in goals per game with 3.19.

Ellis (back) returned to practice Monday and should be available moving forward.
Ellis was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against Toronto due to tightness in his back, but he downplayed the severity of the issue Monday. He said that he wasn't feeling 100 percent healthy Saturday, and the team made the decision to simply start Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen rather than having Ellis push through. Head coach Lindy Ruff said after practice that Ellis felt much better and will likely be fully available going forward.

Ellis was originally expected to start in Saturday's road game against Toronto, but he missed that assignment due to his injury. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen got the nod instead and stopped 18 of 22 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss. Even if Ellis ends up being an option for Tuesday's home game against Columbus, it's not clear if he'll play between the pipes. In addition to Ellis and Luukkonen, Buffalo also has goaltender Alex Lyon on the roster, so there's plenty of competition for starts.

Ellis (undisclosed) will miss Saturday's road game against Toronto, per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
Ellis was originally going to start Saturday, according to Friedman, but he's not 100 percent. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (lower body) will make his season debut instead after being activated off injured reserve Thursday. Ellis won his NHL debut Wednesday, stopping 29 of 31 shots against Detroit.

Ellis stood tall against a tough opponent to come away with the win in his NHL debut. The 25-year-old was acquired by the Sabres prior to the start of the season when they claimed him off waivers from the Blues. Ellis has settled in as Alex Lyon's backup, but this strong performance could help Ellis gain more playing time. He doesn't have long to make an impression, as Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (lower body) is with AHL Rochester on a conditioning assignment. Expect Lyon and Ellis to split the Sabres' upcoming home-and-home set versus the Maple Leafs on Friday and Saturday.

Ellis split his time between the AHL and ECHL this season, logging 16 games for AHL Springfield in which he posted a 7-9-0 record and .924 save percentage while also going 12-5-2 for ECHL Orlando. Selected by the Blues in the third round of the 2019 NHL Draft, the Nova Scotia native shouldn't be expected to make his NHL debut anytime soon but could push for a more prominent role with the AHL Thunderbirds.
