Alex Formenton: Won't re-sign with Ottawa
Ottawa won't re-sign Formenton, general manager Steve Staios told TSN 1200 Ottawa on Wednesday.
After Formenton was acquitted of all charges of sexual assault in July, the NHL announced that he's eligible to register a new contract Oct. 15, followed by a return to game action Dec. 1. The 26-year-old was a restricted free agent, but if the Senators don't plan on retaining his rights, then he can sign anywhere. However, it's not clear if he'll end up back in the NHL. He spent 2022-23 and 2023-24 with Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland's National League, and after missing 2024-25 while on a leave of absence due to the charges, he is back with Ambri-Piotta for 2025-26. However, his new deal with the club is a four-month contract that contains an option to extend through the full campaign, which does leave the door open for him to head to North America. Formenton had 18 goals, 32 points and 59 PIM in 79 appearances with Ottawa in 2021-22.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Eligible for NHL play in December
The NHL announced Thursday that Formenton will be eligible to return to game action Dec. 1, Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports.
Formenton hasn't suited up for the Senators since the 2023-24 campaign, and he was granted a leave of absence by the team due to charges of sexual assault. However, he was acquitted of all charges in July and signed a four-month contract with HC Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland's National League in early September. The deal includes an option to remain through the end of the season, but Formenton will be eligible to return to the NHL this winter. Per Johnston, contracts can be registered with the NHL on Oct. 15, and the players can begin conditioning with a team Nov. 15 and appear in a game Dec. 1.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Signs with Swiss team
Formenton signed a four-month contract, plus an option to remain through the end of the 2025-26 season, with HC Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland's National League on Saturday.
Formenton had 10 goals and 16 points in 24 regular-season appearances with the Swiss club in 2023-24 before being granted a leave of absence due to charges of sexual assault. After being acquitted of all charges in July, Formenton will resume his playing career. He hasn't been reinstated by the NHL yet and remains a restricted free agent on the Senators' non-roster list.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Reportedly ends hockey career
Formenton (personal) is not pursuing a hockey contract in 2024-25 while awaiting a September 2025 trial for charges of sexual assault from an alleged incident that occurred during a 2018 Hockey Canada event, Steve Warne of The Hockey News reports.
Two of the other players facing charges from that incident, Dillon Dube and Michael McLeod, have signed KHL contracts for 2024-25. Formenton is instead working in construction, and given that he is two years removed from any NHL action, it is unlikely he will resume his playing career once his trial is complete. Ontario Superior Court Justice Bruce Thomas said, "It is clear each of the applicants has a need to work or find work not only to sustain themselves, but to pay their expenses, which at this point include legal fees." Formenton will remain on the Senators' reserve list as an unsigned player until his signing rights lapse Sept. 13, 2026. All four of the other players facing charges were effectively released by their teams in June when none of them received a qualifying offer, but Formenton's status is different since he has played overseas the last two seasons while not signed to an NHL contract.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Ordered to surrender to police
Formenton (personal) has been directed to surrender to London, Ontario police to be charged with sexual assault in connection with an alleged incident that occurred during a 2018 Hockey Canada event, TSN reports.
Per TSN, Formenton and four other individuals, who are all NHL players, are expected to surrender before the London Police Service holds a press conference Monday to provide a public update on the case. The five individuals are accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a London hotel on June 19, 2018, following a Hockey Canada Foundation golf and gala event. Formenton, who hasn't played in the NHL since 2021-22 but is on the Senators' reserve list as an unsigned restricted free agent, remains on an indefinite leave of absence from Swiss club Ambri Piotta.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Re-signs in Switzerland
Formenton signed with Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss League on Thursday, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports.
Formenton signed until Christmas and can get out of his contract at any time if he signs with Ottawa or another NHL team. Formenton spent last season with Ambri-Piotta after he and the Senators were unable to agree on a contract by the Dec. 1 deadline. Formenton had 18 goals and 32 points in 79 games with the Senators in 2021-22.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Signs overseas deal
Formenton agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Swiss club Ambri-Piotta HC on Wednesday.
Formenton failed to agree to a new deal with the Senators before the Dec. 1 deadline, meaning he won't be eligible to play in the NHL this year. The winger was coming off a career year in which he racked up 18 goals and 14 assists in 79 contests. Formenton appears to be banking on a strong year in Switzerland in order to bolster his position at the bargaining table ahead of next season.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Can't play in NHL in 2022-23
Formenton didn't sign with Ottawa before the 5 p.m. EST deadline Thursday, which makes him ineligible to play in the NHL for the rest of the 2022-23 campaign, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Formenton is a restricted free agent, which is why there was a deadline for him to agree to a contract. Ottawa can still re-sign Formenton or trade his negotiating rights to another team, but because the deadline has passed, he still wouldn't be able to play in the NHL until next season. The 23-year-old forward had 18 goals, 32 points, 59 PIM and 101 hits in 79 games in 2021-22.

At this point it isn't clear if Formenton will wait to report to training camp until he's signed a new deal. The 23-year-old winger picked up 18 goals and 32 points while averaging 15:27 of ice time through 79 contests last campaign.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Tallies twice Tuesday
Formenton scored two goals on seven shots and added three hits in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout win over the Canucks.
Formenton hadn't gotten on the scoresheet since his goal March 26 versus the Panthers, so this was an unexpected burst of offense. The 22-year-old has showed promise in spurts this season with 17 tallies, 13 helpers, 152 shots on net, 98 hits and a minus-12 rating through 74 outings. He'll continues to see a middle-six role, but his lack of consistency makes him a risky option in most fantasy formats.

Formenton has now scored a goal in two of his last three appearances. The 22-year-old winger has enjoyed a breakout season in 2021-22, setting career highs in goals (13), assists (11) and shots on net (114). He should continue to log middle-six minutes down the stretch.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Back in action
Formenton (undisclosed) will play Tuesday versus the Blues.
Formenton is expected to skate in his usual second-line role. He exited Sunday's game versus the Capitals early after a hit from Garnet Hathaway, but he's no worse for wear. Formenton has 22 points, 57 hits and 91 shots on net through 42 games this season.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Exits win early
Formenton (undisclosed) was removed from Sunday's game in the third period for what coach D.J. Smith called "precautionary reasons," Ian Mendes of TSN 1200 Ottawa reports.
The 22-year-old forward opened the scoring in a 4-1 win over the Capitals with a short-handed goal in the first period before taking a big hit from Garnet Hathaway later in the afternoon that could wind up being looked at by the league. Formenton has 11 goals and 22 points through 42 games in his first full season in the NHL, and if he winds up missing additional time, Ottawa could have trouble replacing him in the top six with Josh Norris (shoulder) and Drake Batherson (ankle) still on injured reserve.

Senators' Alex Formenton: Provides helper in win
Formenton notched an assist and went plus-2 in Monday's 4-1 win over the Devils.
Formenton helped out on Nick Paul's game-tying goal in the first period. The 22-year-old Formenton entered the All-Star break on a three-game point drought, but he didn't need long to get back on the scoresheet. The Ontario native is poised to see top-six minutes in the second half of the campaign. He's earned his first 20-point campaign with nine goals, 11 assists, 78 shots on net, 49 hits and a minus-1 rating through 38 contests.
