Red Wings' Ian Mitchell: Put on waivers
Mitchell was placed on waivers by Detroit on Wednesday, per Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports.
Mitchell had four goals and 27 points across 47 outings with AHL Providence as well as an assist in 15 appearances with Boston during the 2024-25 regular season. Mitchell is expected to report to AHL Grand Rapids if he goes unclaimed, but it wouldn't be surprising if the 26-year-old gets a chance with the Red Wings at some point during the campaign.

Red Wings' Ian Mitchell: Inks one-year deal
Mitchell signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Red Wings on Tuesday.
Mitchell logged one assist and a minus-2 rating over 15 outings with Boston in 2024-25, and he also notched four goals, 27 points and a plus-11 rating with AHL Providence. The 2017 second-round selection by Chicago will compete for a depth role on Detroit's blue line this coming season.

Mitchell is a pending restricted free agent this offseason, but he hasn't done much lately to make a lasting impression on the Bruins. He's on a 10-game point drought and has just one point, an assist, over 14 outings at the NHL level this season. He's added 21 blocked shots, 10 shots on goal and a minus-3 rating. The Bruins have some holes to fill on the blue line for 2025-26, but it's unclear if Mitchell will be part of that.

Mitchell has played in four of the Bruins' last five games, and he's got a clearer path to the lineup after Brandon Carlo was traded to the Maple Leafs. The 26-year-old Mitchell has one assist, three shots on net, five blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating while filling a third-pairing role. His playing time is likely to be safe until Charlie McAvoy (shoulder) returns to the lineup -- and McAvoy's return this season is not guaranteed to happen if the Bruins end up too far adrift of a playoff spot.

Mitchell has made three appearances for Boston this season -- all of which have come in March -- and he's been held pointless with three blocked shots, a hit and a minus-2 rating while averaging 13:35 of ice time, including 1:03 on the power play. Friday's move will make him eligible to participate in the AHL playoffs, but it's possible that he rejoins Boston in the near future.

Mitchell has spent enough time on the NHL roster to be required to pass through waivers again after previously going unclaimed back in late October. Considering the blueliner has been a frequent healthy scratch since then in addition to logging just one assist in 11 games, it seems unlikely another team will claim him this time around. As such, look for Mitchell to land in the minors with AHL Providence once he clears.
