Kapanen recorded a goal and an assist in Saturday's 6-2 win over Utah.
Kapanen found the back of the net at the 14:45 mark of the first period with a snap shot, giving him his sixth goal of the season, and he later set up Alex Newhook's goal in the second frame. This was Kapanen's second multi-point game of the season, and it was also the third time he's posted points in back-to-back games. He has 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 15 games this season, but the lack of consistency on a game-to-game basis, as well as his absence on power-play duties, limit his upside a bit.

Kapanen snapped a six-game goal drought with his tally, which put the Canadiens ahead 3-2 in the middle of the third period. This was Kapanen's first two-point effort of the season, and they were his first helpers. The 22-year-old has added four goals through nine contests, providing surprisingly effective depth scoring from a third-line role. Kapanen has added 12 shots on net, eight hits, six blocked shots and a plus-2 rating. His current scoring pace won't last, but the center is establishing himself as a quality two-way forward in what's likely to be his first full NHL campaign.

Kapanen left Thursday's practice early after being clipped by a high stick, but it wasn't considered to be serious. He had two assists, 16 shots on goal and eight blocked shots across 18 regular-season appearances with the Canadiens in 2024-25. He will compete for a depth role with the team during training camp.

Kapanen left Thursday's practice session early after taking a stick close to his left eye, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
While Kapanen was unable to finish Thursday's practice, his injury is considered minor, so he can be deemed day-to-day ahead of Monday's preseason opener against Pittsburgh. Kapanen spent the season with Timra IK in the Swedish Hockey League, logging 15 goals and 20 helpers in 36 regular-season contests before kicking in another three points in six playoff games. Selected by the Habs in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft, the 21-year-old center saw action in 12 games with the Habs at the start of the 2024-25 campaign but failed to find the back of the net and recorded only two points.

Kapanen has already appeared in 12 games for the Canadiens this season, burning the first year of his entry-level contract even with the move overseas.
