  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Nabs second win

Askarov made 37 saves in Saturday's 3-2 overtime win over the Avalanche. Martin Necas slipped the puck past Askarov just 30 seconds into the game. However, the 23-year-old netminder kept his composure and technically didn't let another shot beat him on the afternoon -- a goal was awarded to Nathan MacKinnon in the second period after the net behind Askarov was knocked off its pegs. The win was Askarov's second of the season, with both coming in his last three starts. Through seven outings, he sports a 4.15 GAA and an .867 save percentage to go with his 2-4-1 record.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Slated starter Saturday

Askarov is expected to start at home against Colorado on Saturday, per Max Miller of NHL.com. Askarov has a 1-4-1 record, 4.69 GAA and .844 save percentage in six outings this year. The 23-year-old has surrendered four or more goals in five of his six appearances. Colorado is 7-1-4 and ranks second in goals per game with 3.75, so this is a very tough assignment for the young goaltender.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Not sharp enough Tuesday

Askarov allowed four goals on 14 shots in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Kings. The Sharks dominated possession, but Askarov wasn't good enough on the few chances the Kings accumulated. The four goals didn't even come from the Kings' best players. It was a pair of fourth-liners and two defensemen who carried the offense. Askarov continues to offer subpar goaltending, though this is part of the growing pains as the Sharks attempt to become more competitive. He is 1-4-1 with a 4.69 GAA and an .844 save percentage this season. The Sharks host the Devils on Thursday.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Gives up two goals

Askarov stopped 26 of 28 shots in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Devils. The third goal was an empty-netter with 47 seconds left in the game. Askarov allowed two power-play goals to New Jersey defenseman Dougie Hamilton, but turned in a valiant effort in Friday's defeat. By the time the Devils added a third goal, the 23-year-old netminder was already on the bench with the Sharks pushing for a late equalizer. The Sharks have been rotating goalies this season, and Askarov hasn't been a very reliable option. In four starts, he's gone 0-3-1 with a 4.81 GAA and a poor .857 save percentage.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Tending twine Tuesday

Askarov will be between the pipes on the road against the Islanders on Tuesday, Max Miller of NHL.com reports. Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic have been splitting the workload for the Sharks to start the season and it seems that trend will continue. In his two outings this year, the 23-year-old Askarov remains winless, going 0-1-1 with a 6.45 GAA and .833 save percentage. Given the young team around him and the timeshare in the crease, Askarov could struggle to put up wins this year, making him a poor fantasy option in redraft formats.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Surrenders six goals in loss

Askarov stopped 28 of 34 shots in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Mammoth. Askarov's 2025-26 is off to an unimpressive start with 13 goals allowed on 78 shots over two games. That shot volume against is a big problem, but one that's not likely to get better in the near term with the Sharks battling multiple injuries on the blue line. The 23-year-old has alternated starts with Alex Nedeljkovic, a pattern that's likely to continue until one goalie gets in a groove. Look for Nedeljkovic to get the nod versus his former team, the Penguins, at home Saturday.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Facing Mammoth

Askarov will patrol the visiting crease in Utah on Friday, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports. Askarov had a tough go of it in his season debut Saturday against Anaheim, allowing seven goals on 43 shots in an overtime loss. Askarov is highly regarded -- he was selected 11th overall by Nashville in 2020 -- and will get a chance to redeem himself against the Mammoth, who are averaging only 2.00 goals per game, 30th in the NHL.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Rough outing Saturday

Askarov stopped 36 of 43 shots in Saturday's 7-6 overtime loss to the Ducks. Askarov didn't exactly impress in his first start of the season, squandering two separate multi-goal leads before giving up a goal to Leo Carlsson in overtime to complete the collapse. It's a start like this that shows why the Sharks seem intent on splitting time between Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic early in the campaign. The 23-year-old Askarov is the goalie of the future, and he'll get his chances in 2025-26, but fantasy managers may want to see him as more of a streaming option when he gets a favorable matchup. The Sharks' next game is a tough one at home versus the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Between pipes against Ducks

Askarov will guard the cage in Saturday's home clash versus Anaheim, Max Miller of NHL.com reports. Askarov watched from the bench during the Sharks' Opening Night clash with the Golden Knights on Thursday. Heading into the 2025-26 campaign, the 23-year-old backstop was expected to be the No. 1 option ahead of Alex Nedeljkovic, but it seems perhaps the team is going to more evenly split the workload this year.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Not dressed for Wednesday's game

Askarov (lower body) did not dress for Wednesday's AHL game between San Jose and Ontario, Josh Frojelin of San Jose Hockey Now reports. All signs pointed to Askarov suiting up after he took warmups, but he was a late scratch. Nonetheless, he's close to a return and may start one of the Barracuda's two games versus AHL Colorado on Friday or Saturday.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Hoping to practice soon

Askarov (lower body) is expected back on at practice with AHL San Jose in the coming week, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports Wednesday. Askarov won't be ready to rejoin the Sharks until at least the end of March or the start of April -- though the organization may decide to let him finish out the year with the Barracuda instead of bringing him back to the NHL. In his 13 appearances for the Sharks, the 22-year-old backstop went 4-6-2 with a 3.10 GAA and .896 save percentage.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Suffers injury in AHL game

Askarov (lower body) was hurt in Wednesday's game between AHL San Jose and Ontario, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports. Peng adds that Askarov was favoring his left leg, though an official update on the prospect goaltender was unavailable. In any case, it's unlikely that Askarov will be available in the short term if the Sharks need to call up a goalie.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Assigned to minors

Askarov was reassigned to AHL San Jose on Sunday. The Sharks recalled Vitek Vanecek (face) from his minor-league conditioning assignment in a corresponding move. Askarov will play in the AHL All-Star Classic on Monday and participate in Sunday's AHL All-Star Skills Competition. He has a 4-6-2 record with a 3.10 GAA and an .896 save percentage in 13 NHL appearances this season.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Chased early in second period

Askarov stopped seven of 11 shots in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Kraken. Consistency continues to elude Askarov, who has allowed three or more goals in five of his last six games. The Kraken blitzed him in the second period, scoring three goals in a span of 3:55 before head coach Ryan Warsofsky put Alexandar Georgiev in. For the season, Askarov is 4-6-2 with a 3.10 GAA and an .896 save percentage over 13 appearances. It's looking more and more likely that he'll return to AHL San Jose once Vitek Vanecek (face) completes his conditioning stint. The Sharks are off until Tuesday's game versus the Canadiens, and by that time, Vanecek may be ready to come off injured reserve.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Expected starter for Thursday

Askarov is set to start in Thursday's road clash against Seattle, per Max Miller of NHL.com on Wednesday. Askarov stopped 29 of 30 shots (.967 save percentage) en route to a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh on Monday. He's 4-5-2 with a 2.87 GAA and a .905 save percentage over 12 appearances in 2024-25. Seattle is tied for 17th in goals per game with 2.92.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Loses to former team

Askarov stopped 32 of 38 shots in Thursday's 6-5 loss to the Predators. Askarov, who was dealt from Nashville to San Jose this past offseason, fared no better against his former team in this game than Alexandar Georgiev did Tuesday in Music City. This was Askarov's third straight loss, and he's allowed 13 goals in that span. The 22-year-old is down to 3-5-2 with a 2.93 GAA and a .903 save percentage over 10 contests. It's a poor time for a slump, as Vitek Vanecek (face) could resume practicing soon, and it's possible his return will lead to Askarov's return to the AHL if he can't get his performance back on track. Neither Askarov nor Georgiev will be recommended in fantasy for Saturday's home game against the Panthers.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Can't contain Wild's top line

Askarov allowed three goals on 22 shots in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Wild. The Wild's top line scored in each period, though the last goal came with Askarov attempting to get off the ice for an extra attacker. Since he was caught in his own zone when the puck went in, the goal was still charged to him despite the 22-year-old having no chance to play the shot. He's had few poor outings so far, but this was among his worst at the NHL level this season. Askarov is down to 3-3-2 with a 2.39 GAA and a .917 save percentage over eight appearances. The Sharks begin a five-game road trip when they visit Detroit on Tuesday, and it wouldn't be surprising for Askarov to start three of those games, as Alexandar Georgiev hasn't done anything to justify earning more playing time.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Starting Saturday

Askarov will patrol the home crease versus Minnesota on Saturday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Askarov has been outstanding in limited action this season, going 3-2-2 with a 2.30 GAA and a .923 save percentage for the lowly Sharks. Askarov has spent most of the season at the AHL level, where he was 9-4-1 with a 2.00 GAA and a .938 save percentage in 14 appearances. The Wild are scoring 3.00 goals per game this season.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: First off ice Thursday

Askarov was the first goaltender off the ice at morning skate and is slated to defend the home crease versus Tampa Bay on Thursday, Max Miller of NHL.com reports. Askarov is 1-2-2 with the Sharks this season, surrendering 13 goals on 153 shots (.915 save percentage) as he is making his case to take over the top job in San Jose. The 22-year-old was selected 11th overall in 2020 by Nashville and was dealt to San Jose in the offseason. Askarov has a tough matchup, as the Lightning are averaging a league-high 3.94 goals per game this season.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Falls to Flames

Askarov allowed two goals on 32 shots in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Flames. The third goal was an empty-netter. Despite the loss, Askarov's performance on Saturday was encouraging. The Flames' first goal was a tipped-in shot, and the second came on a power play, so there's not much blame to place on Askarov for either tally. Still, he's 1-2-2 with a 2.62 GAA and a .915 save percentage through five NHL outings this season. Vitek Vanecek is week-to-week with a fractured cheekbone, so Askarov will have an extended opportunity to challenge Alexandar Georgiev for playing time between the pipes. The Sharks' next game is Tuesday versus the Flyers.
