Top Yaroslav Askarov News

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Rough outing Saturday

Askarov stopped 36 of 43 shots in Saturday's 7-6 overtime loss to the Ducks.

Askarov didn't exactly impress in his first start of the season, squandering two separate multi-goal leads before giving up a goal to Leo Carlsson in overtime to complete the collapse. It's a start like this that shows why the Sharks seem intent on splitting time between Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic early in the campaign. The 23-year-old Askarov is the goalie of the future, and he'll get his chances in 2025-26, but fantasy managers may want to see him as more of a streaming option when he gets a favorable matchup. The Sharks' next game is a tough one at home versus the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Between pipes against Ducks

Askarov will guard the cage in Saturday's home clash versus Anaheim, Max Miller of NHL.com reports.

Askarov watched from the bench during the Sharks' Opening Night clash with the Golden Knights on Thursday. Heading into the 2025-26 campaign, the 23-year-old backstop was expected to be the No. 1 option ahead of Alex Nedeljkovic, but it seems perhaps the team is going to more evenly split the workload this year.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Tending twine Saturday

Askarov will patrol the visiting crease in Utah on Saturday, per Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News.

Askarov will probably start Opening Night versus Vegas on Thursday. He has been considered the Sharks' goaltender of the future since being acquired from Nashville in August of 2024. During the 2024-25 regular season, Askarov was 4-6-2 with a 3.10 GAA and an .896 save percentage across 13 appearances with the Sharks in 2024-25. He was superb at the AHL level last year, posting an 11-9-1 mark with a 2.45 GAA and a .923 save percentage in 22 regular-season games.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Exits ice first Friday

Askarov was the first goalie to leave the ice Friday, Max Miller of NHL.com reports, indicating he'll patrol the crease on the road against Vegas.

With Askarov taking the start Friday, it seems likely that Alex Nedeljkovic will get the nod for Saturday's clash with Utah before Askarov takes the crease for Opening Night against Vegas at home Thursday. Looking ahead to the rest of the 2025-26 campaign, Askarov figures to see the bulk of the workload for San Jose, though Nedeljkovic could certainly see plenty of starts as well.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Starting Friday

Askarov will patrol the home crease versus Vegas on Friday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Askarov is considered the Sharks' goaltender of the future, and that should begin this season, as he has been penciled in as the No. 1 starter. Askarov played in 13 NHL games in 2024-25, posting a 4-6-2 record to go with a 3.10 GAA and an .896 save percentage. Look for Askarov to play in 45-50 contests in 2025-26.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Available for AHL club

Askarov (lower body) traveled with AHL San Jose and will be available for the Barracuda's matchups against Colorado on Friday and Saturday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Askarov sustained a lower-body injury in mid-February but has been practicing recently and will be available to return to game action this weekend. Over 19 AHL appearances this year, he's gone 10-7-1 with a 2.52 GAA and .922 save percentage.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Not dressed for Wednesday's game

Askarov (lower body) did not dress for Wednesday's AHL game between San Jose and Ontario, Josh Frojelin of San Jose Hockey Now reports.

All signs pointed to Askarov suiting up after he took warmups, but he was a late scratch. Nonetheless, he's close to a return and may start one of the Barracuda's two games versus AHL Colorado on Friday or Saturday.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Returning in backup role

Askarov (lower body) is backing up Gabriel Carriere in AHL San Jose's game Wednesday versus AHL Ontario, Josh Frojelin of San Jose Hockey Now reports.

Askarov will dress for the first time since Feb. 19, but he won't be the starter in his return to action. However, it looks like he's close to getting back between the pipes in a game. Given how much time he's missed, it wouldn't be surprising for Askarov to close out 2024-25 in the AHL before competing for an NHL job in training camp.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Hoping to practice soon

Askarov (lower body) is expected back on at practice with AHL San Jose in the coming week, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports Wednesday.

Askarov won't be ready to rejoin the Sharks until at least the end of March or the start of April -- though the organization may decide to let him finish out the year with the Barracuda instead of bringing him back to the NHL. In his 13 appearances for the Sharks, the 22-year-old backstop went 4-6-2 with a 3.10 GAA and .896 save percentage.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Suffers injury in AHL game

Askarov (lower body) was hurt in Wednesday's game between AHL San Jose and Ontario, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports.

Peng adds that Askarov was favoring his left leg, though an official update on the prospect goaltender was unavailable. In any case, it's unlikely that Askarov will be available in the short term if the Sharks need to call up a goalie.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Assigned to minors

Askarov was reassigned to AHL San Jose on Sunday.

The Sharks recalled Vitek Vanecek (face) from his minor-league conditioning assignment in a corresponding move. Askarov will play in the AHL All-Star Classic on Monday and participate in Sunday's AHL All-Star Skills Competition. He has a 4-6-2 record with a 3.10 GAA and an .896 save percentage in 13 NHL appearances this season.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Chased early in second period

Askarov stopped seven of 11 shots in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Kraken.

Consistency continues to elude Askarov, who has allowed three or more goals in five of his last six games. The Kraken blitzed him in the second period, scoring three goals in a span of 3:55 before head coach Ryan Warsofsky put Alexandar Georgiev in. For the season, Askarov is 4-6-2 with a 3.10 GAA and an .896 save percentage over 13 appearances. It's looking more and more likely that he'll return to AHL San Jose once Vitek Vanecek (face) completes his conditioning stint. The Sharks are off until Tuesday's game versus the Canadiens, and by that time, Vanecek may be ready to come off injured reserve.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Expected starter for Thursday

Askarov is set to start in Thursday's road clash against Seattle, per Max Miller of NHL.com on Wednesday.

Askarov stopped 29 of 30 shots (.967 save percentage) en route to a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh on Monday. He's 4-5-2 with a 2.87 GAA and a .905 save percentage over 12 appearances in 2024-25. Seattle is tied for 17th in goals per game with 2.92.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Excellent in win over Pittsburgh

Askarov stopped 29 of 30 shots in Monday's 2-1 win over the Penguins.

Askarov earned his first win since Jan. 4, snapping a four-game stretch in which he went 0-3-0 with a 4.51 GAA and an .852 save percentage. This was a step in the right direction, but between his lack of consistency and the Sharks' defensive woes, it's hard to trust Askarov in most fantasy formats -- even if he has an occasional strong outing from time to time.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Facing Pittsburgh

Askarov will defend the home cage Monday against the Penguins, per Max Miller of NHL.com.

Askarov allowed three goals on 17 shots after replacing Alexandar Georgiev in the middle stanza of Saturday's 7-2 loss to Florida. The 22-year-old Askarov has conceded at least three goals in four consecutive outings, and he hasn't been in the win column since Jan. 4. The Russian netminder will attempt to earn his fourth win of the campaign against a Pittsburgh club that is tied for 17th in the NHL with 2.92 goals per game.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Poor showing in relief

Askarov stopped 14 of 17 shots in relief of Alexandar Georgiev in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Panthers.

Askarov will avoid taking a result from this game, but that's about the only positive. The Panthers eased up after a four-goal second period, but Askarov didn't do much better than Georgiev after entering the game early in the middle frame. He's winless over his last four outings, and Askarov has allowed 16 goals in that span. The 22-year-old remains at 3-5-2 through 11 appearances, but his GAA rose to 3.04, and his save percentage dropped to .898 due to Saturday's performance. The Sharks' next game is Monday at home versus the Penguins.
