Senators' Linus Ullmark: Nets Opening Night win
Ullmark made made 21 saves Thursday in a 5-4 win over Tampa Bay.
His team roared back after going down 3-1, and Ullmark held the proverbial fort to earn the victory. Durability was an issue for Ullmark last season -- he played just 44 games. Leevi Merilainen kept the Sens in the hunt in December and January, and he will be counted on this year to keep Ullmark fresh for the postseason. It won't be a 50/50 split -- Ullmark is clearly the starter. However, keep an eye on how the two are deployed, as managing weekly lineups may prove to be a challenge at times based on the number of games each goaltender plays.

Senators' Linus Ullmark: Gets Opening Night start
Ullmark will draw the road Opening Night assignment in goal against Tampa Bay on Thursday, Julian McKenzie of The Athletic reports.
Ullmark solidified Ottawa's netminding in 2024-25 after an offseason trade from Boston. He was 25-14-3 with four shutouts, a 2.72 GAA and a .909 save percentage. He will likely play 45-50 games this season, as the Senators are quite high on young goaltender Leevi Merilainen.

Ullmark is expected to start on the road against Montreal in Saturday's preseason game.
Ullmark has stopped 19 of 22 shots across two appearances this preseason. He will open the 2025-26 campaign as Ottawa's No. 1 goaltender, so look for him to get the start in Ottawa's regular-season opener in Tampa Bay on Thursday.

He'd like the first one back for sure. Auston Matthews beat a screened Ullmark on a soft wrist shot from above the left circle. The veteran netminder was sharp in some games and outplayed in others. The latter was true Thursday night. Ullmark finished the postseason with a 2-4-0 record with one shutout, 2.84 GAA and .880 save percentage.

Ullmark helped keep the Sens' season alive in Game 4 on Saturday, stopping 31 of 34 shots en route to a 4-3 overtime victory. The Swedish netminder hasn't been at his best in this series, as he's surrendered at least three goals in each game. Ottawa will need to keep the penalties to a minimum in Game 5, as the Leafs have scored at least one goal with the man advantage in all three of their wins. Ullmark put up a sparkling, Vezina-quality performance Saturday to quiet his critics for at least one night. He is 1-3 with a 3.44 GAA and an .848 save percentage this postseason. Through 14 playoff games in his career, he has a 4-10 record with a 3.54 GAA and an .878 save percentage. Ottawa will need another performance like Saturday's in Game 5 in Toronto on Tuesday to avoid elimination.

Ullmark has allowed 12 goals on 65 shots (.815 save percentage) over the first three games of the series, losing all three. The Senators' playoff run is hanging by a thread -- a second straight overtime loss put them down 3-0 in the series. Ullmark did fairly well to keep his team in the battle Thursday, but Simon Benoit's tally 1:19 into overtime made that effort go to waste. Ullmark has allowed 12 goals on 65 shots over three contests this postseason. He'll likely get the nod again for Game 4 on Saturday as the Senators face the Herculean task of needing four straight wins to keep their playoffs going.

The Maple Leafs scored three of their six goals on the power play, and that was the difference. Toronto was opportunistic, while Ottawa was unable to convert despite creating plenty of chances. Ullmark is one of few players on the Senators' roster with any playoff experience, but this was just his 11th postseason appearance. He'll likely start again Tuesday in Game 2, but any continued struggles could allow Anton Forsberg to get some action.

Ullmark stopped 28 shots in Thursday's 7-5 win over the Hurricanes.
Ottawa was staring at a 5-3 deficit heading into the third period, but Ullmark shut the door completely in the final frame as his team's offense took control. It was the netminder's fourth straight win to close out the regular season, a stretch in which he posted a 2.01 GAA and .931 save percentage, and Ullmark looks ready for the postseason -- which begins Sunday for the Senators in Toronto.
