The Saints released Newton on Wednesday, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Newton played in just one game for the Saints in 2018. The veteran has experience at both guard and tackle and has made 68 starts in the NFL, so he could draw plenty of interest from teams now that he's back on the open market.

Saints' Derek Newton: Rejoins New Orleans
Newton signed a contract with the Saints on Thursday, Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Newton was previously released by the Saints on Dec. 20, but he now rejoins the team's active roster alongside fellow offensive lineman Cornelius Lucas. New Orleans' decision to re-sign Newton could be indicative of an intent to rest their starting linemen Week 17.

Newton signed a contract with the Saints on Tuesday, Nick Underhill of The New Orleans Advocate reports.
Newton's spot on the 53-man roster comes following the placement of Michael Ola (ankle) on season-ending injured reserve. The eighth-year journeyman will serve a depth role in New Orleans' offensive line.

Derek Newton: Cut by Texans
Newton (knee) was released by the Texans on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Newton was entering the fourth year of a five-year, $26 million contract. The obvious reason for his release is the residual effects of the ruptured patellar tendons he sustained in both of his knees back in 2016, which sidelined him for all of 2017. It's unclear when Newton will be able to play again, though he has been working toward a return. The 30-year-old lineman doesn't yet have a timetable for recovery, but he could sign with another team if he's able get healthy and pass a physical down the road.

Texans' Derek Newton: Progressing towards return
Newton (knee) is working through his rehab but it isn't clear when he'll be cleared for practices, John McClain of The Houston Chronicle reports.
Newton sat out all of the 2017 season after undergoing surgery to repair fractured quad tendons in both of his legs during the 2016 campaign. The tackle has worked steadily towards a return from what can be a career-ending injury and remains without a concrete return timetable. He started 60 games for the Texans from 2012 through 2015 and would be a candidate to start once again if he ever regains his old form.

Texans' Derek Newton: Potentially out for entire 2017 season
Newton (knee) is a candidate to miss the entire 2017 season after tearing patellar tendons in both of his knees during Week 7 of his 2016 campaign, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Newton was placed on the PUP list last week; meanwhile, the Texans signed 31-year-old Breno Giacomini on Tuesday to provide a veteran option at right tackle. The Texans should have a better read on Newton's health outlook once training camp arrives, but at this time, there's a good possibility he doesn't suit up in 2017.

Texans' Derek Newton: Placed on physically unable to perform list
Newton (knee) was placed on the physically unable to perform list Friday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN reports.
Newton tore his patellar tendons in both legs during Week 7 of the 2016 season. Due to the severity of the injury, this designation was expected. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported in February that Newton was making "steady progress" in his recovery, but it still remains unclear if or when he will be able to return in 2017.
