The Celtics waived Davison on Thursday, Justin Turpin of WEEI.com reports.

After spending his first three seasons in the NBA with Boston, Davison will be looking for a fresh start. The Alabama product appeared in 16 regular-season games during the 2024-25 campaign, but he saw the floor rarely, averaging 5.8 minutes per game.

  • Celtics' JD Davison: Team option exercised

The Celtics exercised their $2.27 million team option in Davison's contract for 2025-26 on Sunday, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports.

Davison will return to Boston for a fourth season and is now set to become an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2026-27 campaign. The 22-year-old guard appeared in 16 regular-season games last season, averaging 2.1 points across a career-high 5.8 minutes per game.

Davison posted one point (0-3 FG, 1-2 FT) over six minutes during Friday's 119-81 loss to the Knicks in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Davison made his fourth appearance of the postseason due to the lopsided score. A G League standout in 2024-25, Davison made just 16 regular-season appearances for Boston, averaging 2.1 points and 0.8 assists in 5.8 minutes. He could have more opportunities in 2025-26, however.

  • Celtics' JD Davison: Signing standard deal

The Celtics are converting Davison to a standard, two-year contract Saturday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.

Davison was previously on a two-way contract, splitting time between the Celtics' G League and NBA squads. The 22-year-old guard was even named G League MVP for the 2024-25 season. However, Davison will now have the opportunity to compete for minutes in the parent club's backcourt.

  • Celtics' JD Davison: Named G League MVP

Davison has been named the G League's Most Valuable Player for 2024-25, Marc J. Spears of ESPN.com reports.

Davison helped guide the Maine Celtics into the G League playoffs for a third consecutive season, closing the regular season with averages of 25.1 points, 7.6 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.6 three-pointers in 34.5 minutes while shooting 48.3 percent from the field over 30 appearances. The two-way player has also logged 4.3 minutes per game across 13 outings in the NBA this year, and he'll remain a candidate to bounce around with Maine and Boston as long as the G League club stays alive in the postseason. Davison dropped a 38-point, 12-assist double-double in Tuesday's first-round playoff win over the Capital City Go-Go.

Davison led Maine with game-high marks in points, rebounds and assists en route to his second double-double over 39 G League outings. He also racked up his 13th outing with 30-plus points. The two-way combo guard has received little playing time at the NBA level this season, and he is averaging 25.5 points, 8.0 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.6 three-pointers across 34.4 minutes per contest in the G League.
