Hardaway is expected to compete for the Heat's starting shooting guard job during the preseason, but Klay Thompson is considered the clear front-runner for the role, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reports.
Miami is prioritizing perimeter shooting around Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Thompson's combination of size, volume and efficiency from beyond the arc gives him an edge entering camp. If Thompson claims the starting spot as expected, Hardaway would likely begin the season as one of Miami's primary perimeter options off the bench.

Heat's Tim Hardaway: Signing with Miami
Hardaway agreed to a one-year, $6.5 million deal with Miami on Tuesday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.
After Miami acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee in a blockbuster trade, the front office is adding Hardaway to bolster the team's depth and provide spacing. The 2013 No. 24 overall pick is coming off a quality 2025-26 campaign with the Nuggets, averaging 13.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.5 steals while shooting a career-high 40.7 percent from deep across 26.6 minutes in 80 regular-season appearances.

Hardaway is one of the best long-range shooters in the NBA right now, and he showed that with an impressive performance in what turned out to be a tighter-than-expected win. Perhaps more importantly, Hardaway bounced back from the four-point dud he posted in the win over Dallas on Wednesday. The lack of consistency on a game-to-game basis limits Hardaway's potential from a fantasy perspective, but he's a player who can get hot at any moment. He has scored at least 20 points in four of his last eight games, but he's also produced single-digit outputs three times over that stretch. Still, as a player who's making a career-high 40.9 percent of his threes this season, Hardaway should be a player to roster even with his ups and downs.
