Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Thumb surgery imminent
Alvarez will undergo surgery in the coming days to repair a sprained UCL in his right thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Alvarez suffered the injury in late August, but he elected to delay surgery until the offseason and returned to play in early September. The operation could delay Alvarez's offseason workouts a bit, but it should not affect his availability for the beginning of spring training.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Back in Friday's lineup at DH
Alvarez (cramps) will start at designated hitter and bat seventh in Friday's game in Miami.
Alvarez didn't play in Thursday's game versus the Cubs due to cramps, but he's back in action after a day of rest. With Alvarez at DH, Luis Torrens will do the catching for the Mets.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Battling cramps
Alvarez isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs due to cramps, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Alvarez felt cramping in his lower half toward the end of Wednesday's contest, so manager Carlos Mendoza decided to give him a day to recover Thursday. The skipper noted that Alvarez will be available off the bench, but it will be Luis Torrens behind the plate catching for starter Nolan McLean.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Taking seat Thursday
Alvarez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.
After starting and homering in both of the first two games of the series, Alvarez will get a breather for Thursday's finale. Luis Torrens is catching and batting sixth for the Mets.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Swats clutch home run
Alvarez went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, a walk and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Cubs.
Alvarez went deep in the eighth off Caleb Thielbar to put the Mets ahead 9-7. It was Alvarez's third home run in his last nine games, a span during which he's batting .310/.394/.690. Alvarez has quietly put together a productive second half of the season when he's been available. In 37 games since being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on July 21, Alvarez is hitting .282/.363/.573 with seven homers and 19 RBI.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Getting breather Thursday

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: No X-rays planned after HBP
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said the hit-by-pitch that forced Alvarez from Tuesday's game versus the Padres struck the catcher on the left triceps, and while Alvarez is sore, no X-rays are planned, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports.
It appeared at first glance that Alvarez was hit on the elbow by a 100-mph sinker from Bradgley Rodriguez, but Mendoza clarified that it was Alvarez's triceps. Alvarez has missed time this season on multiple occasions due to hit-by-pitches, but it seems he'll avoid an extended absence this time. Consider the Mets catcher day-to-day.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Good to go after HBP
Alvarez (triceps) will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Padres.
Alvarez was lifted for a pinch runner in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 8-3 win after he was plunked by a Bradgley Rodriguez 100-mph fastball during his fourth and final plate appearance. Though Alvarez -- who has been playing through a broken pinkie finger on his left hand and a torn UCL in his right thumb -- has now been hit on the left arm by a pitch three times in the last three weeks, he'll be able to fight through any lingering soreness and step back in behind the dish Wednesday.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Exits after HBP
Alvarez was removed from Tuesday's game against the Padres after getting hit on the elbow by a pitch, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports.
Alvarez was in a considerable amount of pain after taking a 100-mph sinker from Bradgley Rodriguez off his elbow in the eighth inning and was immediately replaced by a pinch runner. If Alvarez needs to miss any time, Hayden Senger would be forcing to take on starting duties with Luis Torrens (forearm) already on the shelf.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: First homer since return
Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-3 loss to the Rangers.
The backstop got his team on the board by slicing a 98.2 mph fastball from Jacob deGrom over the wall in the right-field corner to lead off the third inning, but the Mets were already in a 6-0 hole at that point. It was Alvarez's eighth homer of the season, and his first in eight games since returning from his latest IL stint, but he's batting just .182 (4-for-22) during that span as he plays through both a fractured left index finger and a sprained right thumb, the latter of which will likely require offseason surgery. With Luis Torrens (forearm) on the shelf and New York desperately trying to hang onto a wild-card spot, however, Alvarez will get as much playing time as his pain tolerance allows.

Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Sitting Thursday
Alvarez isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies.
Alvarez will get a day to regroup after going just 2-for-18 with nine strikeouts in six games since returning from the injured list. Hayden Senger will take over behind the plate and bat ninth.
