  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Loses roster spot

The Yankees optioned Effross to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. Effross was optioned after struggling in Friday's loss to Philadelphia, giving up four runs on four hits with one walk and no strikeouts over one inning. The outing continued a rough start to the second half for the right-hander, who has surrendered eight runs across 4.2 frames since the All-Star break. New York figures to bring up a fresh arm to replace Effross in the bullpen, but that move has not yet been made.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Promoted Friday

The Yankees recalled Effross from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. The right-hander has spent the past couple weeks with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but will rejoin the Yankees ahead of Friday's series opener versus the Mets. Effross delivered a scoreless frame in his lone appearance of the season for the Yankees on June 17.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Optioned to minors

The Yankees optioned Effross to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday. Effross pitched a scoreless inning during Tuesday's 4-0 loss to the Angels in his first appearance for the Yankees since being recalled from Triple-A last week. He owns a 9.90 ERA in 10 innings over three minor-league levels this season, however, so there's still plenty of work to be done before he begins drawing consideration for a more permanent spot in New York's bullpen.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Activated, sent to Triple-A

The Yankees reinstated Effross (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list Sunday and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The right-hander opened the campaign on the injured list due to a hamstring strain he suffered at the start of spring training, and he won't immediately join the big-league club upon being activated. Effross hasn't seen significant action in the majors since 2022, when he had a 2.54 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 62:15 K:BB in 60 regular-season appearances between the Cubs and Yankees.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Shifting rehab to Double-A

Effross (hamstring) had his rehab assignment transferred to Double-A Somerset on Saturday. Effross made one rehab appearance for the Yankees' Florida Complex League affiliate Tuesday, when he allowed one hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless inning without issuing a walk. He's in the final stages of his recovery from the Grade 2 left hamstring strain that he suffered in late February.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Suffers setback with hamstring

Effross suffered a setback with his strained hamstring and remains in a holding pattern with his recovery, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Effross suffered a Grade 2 left hamstring strain in his first appearance of the spring back on Feb. 25 and remains without an official timetable for his return. He's yet to advance to facing hitters. The 31-year-old right-hander pitched just 3.1 innings in the big leagues with the Yankees last season, registering a 5.40 ERA and 2:2 K:BB across three regular-season appearances.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Suffers Grade 2 hamstring strain

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Effross has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Effross suffered the moderate hamstring strain while delivering his one and only pitch during a Grapefruit League appearance earlier this week. The reliever has been given a platelet-rich plasma injection and is looking at an extended absence. Effross has made just 32 appearances over the last two seasons due to injury.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Will have tests on hamstring

Effross will likely undergo testing after exiting a Grapefruit League appearance Tuesday against the Twins with a hamstring injury, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Effross lasted only one pitch before grabbing at his hamstring and walking off the field with the trainer. The reliever missed all of the 2023 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery and made just 32 appearances between the majors and minors in 2024 while coming back from back surgery.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Settles with New York

The Yankees and Effross avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $800,000 contract Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Effross made just three appearances in the majors in 2024 and none in 2023 due to Tommy John and back surgeries. He's healthy now and will look to regain the form that allowed him to put up a 2.78 ERA and 80:16 K:BB over 71.1 frames from 2021 to 2022.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Back in big leagues

The Yankees recalled Effross from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. He'll take the roster and bullpen spot vacated by Mark Leiter, who has been placed on paternity leave. Effross has permitted two runs over two innings during his time with the Yankees this season.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Optioned to Triple-A

The Yankees optioned Effross to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. Effross tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in Wednesday's loss to the Rangers but finds himself back in the minors a day later. The Yankees will announce a corresponding move prior to Friday's game versus the Cubs, and it could be Ian Hamilton (lat) returning from the injured list.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Receives September call-up

The Yankees recalled Effross from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. Effross's next appearance with the Yankees will be his first since Oct. 3, 2022, as he missed the team's playoff run that season due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. He likely would have been fully cleared for the start of spring training this year, but he underwent back surgery this past winter that prevented him from beginning a rehab assignment until late June. Once Effross was activated from the 60-day injured list over the All-Star break, the Yankees optioned him to Triple-A, where he's flourished in recent weeks. Dating back to Aug. 1, Effross has posted a 1.42 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB in 12.2 innings. He'll likely have to settle for low-leverage work out of the Yankees' bullpen initially but could push his way into a more meaningful role if he fares well.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Logs fifth rehab outing

Effross (back) tossed a scoreless inning for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, allowing one walk and striking out one batter. The appearance was Effross's fifth in a rehab stint that began June 19. The righty reliever is working his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in October of 2022 as well as back surgery that took place last December. Effross has tallied a 2.84 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 8:1 K:BB over 6.1 frames in his rehab assignment thus far and is expected to be ready to return to the big-league bullpen after the All-Star break.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Moving rehab to Triple-A

The Yankees transferred Effross's (back) rehab assignment from Single-A Tampa to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. Effross turned in a pair of clean rehab outings for Tampa, covering three shutout innings while striking out four. He'll likely be in store for a more extended stay at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre that could extend the full length of his 30-day rehab window, which began June 19. The right-hander missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from October 2022 Tommy John surgery and has been on the Yankees' injured list for the entirety of the current season while he works his way back from December back surgery.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Cleared for rehab assignment

Effross (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Tampa on Wednesday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Effross hasn't pitched since 2022 due to Tommy John and back surgeries. He'll need time to knock the rust off but could be a weapon in the second half for the Yankees if he can regain his pre-surgery sharpness. Effross posted a 2.78 ERA and 80:16 K:BB over 71.1 innings from 2021-22 with the Cubs and Yankees.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Moving close to rehab stint

Effross (back) has been throwing to live hitters for several weeks and is getting close to kicking off a minor-league rehab assignment, per MLB.com. Effross underwent Tommy John surgery in October of 2022 and then had back surgery last December. Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently stated that the righty reliever is responding well to his throwing sessions, and it appears that he could begin a rehab stint soon, though Boone didn't indicate an exact date. When Effross is ready to return to the big club, he'll strengthen a bullpen unit that currently ranks third in the majors in team ERA.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Close to facing hitters again

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Effross (back) is close to facing hitters again, MLB.com reports. Effross' last appearance in affiliated ball came Oct. 3, 2022, with the right-handed reliever requiring Tommy John surgery later that month. Though he's fully healed from the elbow surgery, Effross experienced back discomfort last fall and ultimately required a microdiscectomy of his L-4 and L-5 vertabrae. Effross was held back in spring training while he completed his recovery from back surgery, but he seems to have resumed throwing bullpen sessions without issue and should soon take the mound against live hitters. The Yankees are hopeful that Effross will be ready to return from the 60-day injured list at some point during the summer.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Goes to 60-day IL

The Yankees placed Effross (back) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday. Effross can be activated from the IL in late May, but he may not be ready to pitch when first eligible, given that manager Aaron Boone said earlier Wednesday that the right-handed reliever would be out until sometime in the summer while he recovers from the back surgery he underwent in December. The 30-year-old is on the 60-day IL to open a season for a second year in a row, after he missed all of the 2023 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He'll be replaced on the 40-man roster by left-handed reliever Clayton Andrews, whom the Yankees acquired from the Brewers on Wednesday.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Out until summer after back surgery

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Effross (elbow) had back surgery in December and won't be available until some point in the summer, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Effross had his entire 2023 campaign wiped out while he recovered from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in October 2022, but he had been expected to be fully cleared for spring training. However, with the back injury cropping up over the winter and necessitating another surgery, Effross doesn't look like he'll be ready to make his 2024 debut until June or July. On a positive note, Boone said that Effross was able to begin a throwing program last week, but the veteran reliever will presumably be brought along slowly throughout camp and is unlikely to pitch in Grapefruit League games. Effross could be a candidate to open the season on the 60-day injured list.

  • Yankees' Scott Effross: Starts throwing again

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Effross (elbow) recently began a throwing program, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Since Effross is working his way back from October 2022 Tommy John surgery, he'll likely steadily build up his long-toss distance off flat ground for the next several weeks before potentially advancing to mound work by the summer. Even though Effross seems to be making good progress in the early stages of his recovery from surgery, he's still not expected to be an option for the New York bullpen at any point in 2023.
