  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Stays hot at Triple-A

Making his first professional start at third base, Wetherholt went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and three RBI in Sunday's game with Triple-A Memphis.

Wetherholt has been fantastic since his promotion to Memphis in early July, slashing .344/.425/.754 with six home runs, two stolen bases and an 8:9 K:BB over 73 plate appearances covering 16 games. The top prospect is sporting a .310/.425/.528 batting line with 13 long balls and 16 steals this season between Double-A Springfield and Memphis. The timing of Wetherholt's first pro start at the hot corner is interesting, given that Nolan Arenado (shoulder) landed on the 10-day injured list this past Friday and it's unclear when he might return. Wetherholt is pushing for a major-league debut during his first full pro season.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Will play some 3B at Triple-A

Wetherholt is expected to play some third base at Triple-A Memphis, in addition to shortstop and second base, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Wetherholt started 36 games at shortstop and 17 games at second base at Double-A Springfield before being promoted to Memphis on Monday. While he has yet to play third base at the professional level, he saw plenty of action at the hot corner in college at West Virginia. Wetherholt's ultimate position at the major-league level is undetermined, but the Cardinals want him to add to his versatility at Memphis. The top prospect slashed .300/.425/.466 with seven home runs, 14 stolen bases and a 40:44 K:BB over 62 games with Springfield and is slated to make his debut with Memphis on Wednesday after its game Tuesday was rained out.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Heads to Triple-A

The Cardinals promoted Wetherholt from Double-A Springfield to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.

Wetherholt slashed .300/.425/.466 with seven home runs, 14 stolen bases and a 40:44 K:BB over 62 games with Springfield to earn the promotion. He had his first two-home-run game of his career Sunday and had collected a 1.012 OPS since June 1 with Springfield. Wetherholt has split his playing time between shortstop and second base this season, but with Masyn Winn holding down shortstop in the majors, Wetherholt's future is likely at the keystone. While it's possible the 2024 first-round pick could push to join the big club in the second half of this season, a 2026 MLB debut is more likely.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Selected for Futures Game

Wetherholt has been selected to represent the Cardinals in the All-Star Futures Game, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Wetherholt has been excellent at Double-A Springfield in his first full pro season, slashing .305/.430/.453 with five home runs, 13 stolen bases and a 35:41 K:BB. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Wetherholt dealt with hamstring issues in college at West Virginia, but he has stayed healthy in pro ball. The 22-year-old could be considered for a promotion to Triple-A Memphis soon.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Starting season at Double-A level

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Monday that Wetherholt will begin the season at Double-A Springfield, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Wetherholt played just 29 games with Single-A Palm Beach in his pro debut last year but will skip over High-A Peoria and start the 2025 campaign in the Texas League. The 22-year-old will play shortstop with Springfield, but with Masyn Winn manning that spot in St. Louis, Wetherholt's eventual home could be at second or third base.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Reassigned to minors camp

The Cardinals reassigned Wetherholt to minor-league camp Wednesday.

Wetherholt was given lots of playing time this spring but didn't do much at the plate, going 2-for-20 with one home run, three stolen bases and a 5:6 K:BB. The top prospect is slated to open the 2025 season either at High-A Peoria or Double-A Springfield.

  • Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt: Cranks first spring homer

Wetherholt went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run Sunday in Grapefruit League action versus the Astros.

Making his spring training debut, Wetherholt had a bloop single in the fourth inning and then in the fifth drilled an opposite-field, three-run homer off righty A.J. Blubaugh. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Wetherholt slashed .295/.405/.400 in 29 games with Single-A Palm Beach in his pro debut last year. The 22-year-old will likely begin the 2025 season either at High-A Peoria or Double-A Springfield.
