Royals' Luinder Avila: Rejoins big-league bullpen
The Royals recalled Avila from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.
Avila was just sent down Wednesday but eligible to be recalled because he's replacing an injured player in Kyle Isbel (hamstring) on the roster. The rookie right-hander has allowed just one run with an 11:4 K:BB over 9.1 innings this season at the big-league level.

Royals' Luinder Avila: Sent to Omaha
The Royals optioned Avila to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.
He's being sent down in order to clear a spot on the active roster for the return of Cole Ragans (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list. Avila has allowed just one run with an 11:4 K:BB over 9.1 frames with the big club, but having minor-league options remaining worked against him.

Royals' Luinder Avila: Back in big leagues
The Royals recalled Avila from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.
Though Avila made a one-inning relief appearance in his MLB debut back on Aug. 13 against the Nationals, Kansas City will likely be counting on him to provide some length out of the bullpen in September. Avila has mostly served as a swingman at Omaha this season, starting in nine of his 14 appearances while accruing a 5.23 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 61:23 K:BB in 53.1 innings.

Royals' Luinder Avila: Returned to Omaha
The Royals optioned Avila to Triple-A Omaha on Saturday.
The 23-year-old's first MLB stint will come to an end after five days, as he cedes his spot on the active roster to Michael Lorenzen (oblique), who's coming off the injured list to start Saturday's game. Avila made his MLB debut Wednesday, throwing a scoreless inning against Washington.

Royals' Luinder Avila: Called up by Kansas City
The Royals recalled Luinder Avila from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.
The move corresponds with the Royals placing Hunter Harvey on the 15-day injured list due to a right adductor strain. Avila has spent most of the 2025 season in Triple-A, where he has a 4.67 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 51:19 K:BB across 44.1 innings. Though he's mostly operated as a starter in the minors, Avila will likely be a part of the Royals' bullpen -- potentially as a multi-inning reliever -- following Harvey's placement on the IL. Avila's first appearance in a Royals jersey will mark the 23-year-old's major-league debut.

Royals' Luinder Avila: Returns from IL
Triple-A Omaha reinstated Avila (shoulder) from the 7-day injured list Tuesday.
Avila appears ready to slot back into the Omaha rotation for the first time since late May after missing more than two months while recovering from a right shoulder impingement. The 23-year-old made three rehab appearances for High-A Quad Cities prior to being activated, covering six innings and striking out 10 while allowing two earned runs on four hits and three walks.

Royals' Luinder Avila: Hits shelf at Triple-A
Triple-A Omaha placed Avila on its 7-day injured list May 27 due to a right shoulder impingement, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Avila possesses a spot on the Royals' 40-man roster and likely would have been in the mix for his first big-league call-up had he not experienced soreness in his shoulder coming out of his most recent outing with Omaha on May 22. The right-hander had logged a 4.97 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 49:18 K:BB in 41.2 innings with the Triple-A club this season before landing on the shelf.

The 23-year-old ended the 2024 campaign with Triple-A Omaha and will likely return to the International League to begin the 2025 season.

Royals' Luinder Avila: Protected from Rule 5 Draft
The Royals selected Avila from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday.
Avila made just one appearance for Triple-A Omaha in 2024 but played in 19 games for Double-A Northwest Arkansas, posting a 6-5 record, 3.81 ERA and WHIP of 1.39 across 82.2 innings over 19 appearances at the latter affiliate. The 23-year-old right-hander is now protected from the Rule 5 Draft in December.
