After starter Rhett Lowder breezed through three innings, Aguiar entered and did not fare as well. The latter was tagged for all three runs in the fourth inning and has allowed six hits and four runs over four Cactus League frames. Aguiar is nominally in the mix for the final rotation spot, but both of his main rivals, Lowder and Chase Burns, have performed better.

Aguiar allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out two over two innings in Saturday's spring game against the Guardians.
Aguiar stepped on a big-league mound in a game setting for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in October 2024. He was the third of three candidates for the final spot in the Reds rotation to pitch in the Cactus League opener, as Chase Burns started the game followed by Rhett Lowder. Aguiar threw 30 pitches (18 strikes) and used all the pitches in his arsenal, but he didn't face the toughest competition as Cleveland's expected regulars were out of the game by the time Aguiar entered in the fifth inning.

Aguiar had been on a solid run coming into Thursday's outing, allowing five runs on just seven hits in his last three starts (13.2 innings). However, the rookie right-hander ran into a hot Atlanta lineup, as he was charged with a season-high seven runs in his first big-league loss. The 23-year-old Aguiar now sports a 6.25 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 19:12 K:BB through his first 31.2 innings. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with Cleveland next week in what'll likely be his final start of the season.

Aguiar (2-0) picked up the win Friday, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks over 6.1 innings in an 8-4 victory over the Twins. He struck out four.
The rookie right-hander delivered his second career quality start on 86 pitches (57 strikes) but Aguiar was locked in a 1-1 pitchers' duel with Bailey Ober until the Reds erupted for six runs in the top of the seventh, securing the win for the 23-year-old. Through his first six big-league outings, Aguiar carries a 4.88 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 15:10 K:BB. He lines up for his next trip to the mound at home next week against Atlanta.

Aguiar didn't allow a run but labored through 90 pitches and was removed one out shy of completing the fifth inning. It was the fourth time in five starts he's failed to get through the fifth, though it was also the fourth time he's allowed two runs or fewer. Through 21.1 innings Aguiar carries a 5.06 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with an 11:8 K:BB. In order to provide value to the Reds beyond 2024, Aguiar will need to improve that ratio along with his efficiency. His next opportunity is slated to take place in Minnesota when the Reds travel to take on the Twins.

Aguiar will be pitching after just three days of rest, though the Reds seem to be comfortable sending him back out for another start after he threw 78 pitches over four innings Thursday. The Reds have dealt with a significant number of injuries to starting pitchers this year, so Aguiar has a chance to stick in the rotation over the final month of the season. He's tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Astros.

Aguiar (1-0) earned the win against the Pirates on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings.
Aguiar's lone mistake Saturday was the home-run ball served up to Rowdy Tellez, but he was otherwise lights out in his second career start. Aguiar kept the Pirates off balance all night and possibly earned himself another turn in the rotation. It helps that the rookie has allowed just three walks and seven hits in his first 10 innings of work.
