  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Another strong start at Triple-A

Ryan fired six scoreless innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City against Sugar Land on Thursday, striking out eight and giving up four hits and no walks. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said in mid-May that there was a "slim chance" of the 27-year-old joining the big-league rotation in place of Blake Snell (elbow), and Ryan has remained with Oklahoma City for the past three turns through the rotation. The right-hander has been dominant through five Triple-A starts this year with a 2.05 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 29:3 K:BB across 22 innings. After giving up just three earned runs across four outings in his first taste of the big leagues last year, it's likely only a matter of time before Ryan gets another look in 2026.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: 'Slim' chance to join LAD rotation

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday that there is a "slim possibility" Ryan will enter the team's big-league rotation in place of Blake Snell (elbow), Jack Harris of the California Post reports. Snell landed on the 15-day injured list Friday and could be looking at an extended absence if he needs surgery. With Tyler Glasnow (back) also on the IL, Los Angeles could need to find a fill-in starter, though Harris notes the team is set with five healthy starters ahead of next Thursday's off day. Ryan doesn't seem likely to join the MLB rotation given Roberts' comments, but the skipper didn't entirely rule out the possibility. Ryan is coming back from an injury of his own -- a hamstring issue that cost him nearly a month -- but he returned to action Friday for Triple-A Oklahoma City and tossed four innings, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four batters. He tossed 53 pitches in the outing, so the right-hander presumably isn't fully ramped up following his absence. Ultimately, the Dodgers may not need to dig into their minor-league depth for a sixth starter if Glasnow returns in time for the team's next stretch of six consecutive games, which will not begin until May 29 versus Philadelphia.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Slated to return Friday

Ryan (hamstring) is scheduled to make his next start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. Ryan has been shelved on Oklahoma City's 7-day injured list since April 17 due to a hamstring injury, but the 27-year-old right-hander has recovered enough to return to the mound for Friday's Triple-A contest. In two starts prior to his injury, Ryan allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters across seven innings.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Doesn't make Opening Day roster

The Dodgers optioned Ryan to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday. Ryan spent the entire 2025 season recovering from Tommy John surgery and entered spring training with an outside shot at making the Dodgers' Opening Day roster. He appeared in four Cactus League games for the Dodgers and posted a 1.86 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB across 9.2 innings. It was a strong camp for Ryan, but even with Blake Snell (shoulder) expected to start the season on the 15-day injured list, the Dodgers are being mindful of the former's workload and will ease him back in the minors first, per Jack Harris of the California Post. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Ryan in some major-league games in 2026.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Unlikely to break camp with LA

Ryan has had a strong spring but is expected to begin the season in the minors, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. Ryan's most recent spring outing was a four-inning start against Texas on Sunday, during which he allowed just one run and struck out five batters. The right-hander has posted an impressive 1.86 ERA with a 12:4 K:BB over 9.2 frames spanning four appearances this spring, and with Blake Snell (shoulder) slated to open the season on the IL, there had been some thought that Ryan could be a candidate for the open rotation spot. However, Chen surmises that Ryan will almost certainly begin the campaign in the minors due to an early schedule that includes three days off over the first 15 days of the season (which should reduce the need for a sixth starter) and the presence of Emmet Sheehan and Justin Wrobleski, both of whom have more experience as swingmen. It's also worth noting that Ryan missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so while there's a good chance he'll get an opportunity with the big club at some point during the campaign, the Dodgers are likely to manage his workload carefully.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Contending for Opening Day rotation

Ryan has impressed this spring and has a chance to open the regular season in the Dodgers' rotation, Courtney Hollmon of MLB.com reports. Ryan was particularly impressive Tuesday in an outing versus Cleveland, firing two scoreless and hitless innings while issuing one walk and striking out three batters. Through two Cactus League appearances, the right-hander has tossed three scoreless frames with a 4:2 K:BB. Ryan missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he reportedly had a normal offseason and put on about 30 pounds in an effort to increase his durability. He's still more likely than not to begin the campaign in the minors, but injuries within the Dodgers' starting corps -- including to Blake Snell (shoulder) and Gavin Stone (shoulder) -- along with Roki Sasaki's struggles have at least cracked the door open a bit for Ryan to break camp with the big-league club.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Tosses bullpen session Tuesday

Ryan (elbow) threw a bullpen session at spring training Tuesday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. Ryan has had a relatively normal offseason after missing the entire 2025 campaign following Tommy John surgery, but it's at least worth noting his presence on the mound to begin camp. The 27-year-old made his MLB debut in 2024 for the Dodgers, making four starts, and produced a 1.33 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB across 20.1 innings. Ryan packed on 30 pounds while rehabbing in an effort to increase his durability. The right-hander is expected to open the 2026 campaign in the minors.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Packs on weight over winter

Ryan (elbow) said Saturday that he added 30 pounds over the offseason in hopes of increasing his durability, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Ryan believes his relatively slight build contributed to the Tommy John surgery that knocked him out for the entirety of the 2025 season. While rehabbing that injury, Ryan "ate a lot of calories" and "lifted like an animal," which resulted in his weight going from 195 to 225. Ryan said he's had a normal offseason, having already thrown 10 bullpen sessions and touched triple digits on the radar run. The 27-year-old is unlikely to be on the Dodgers' Opening Day roster, but he could be a key rotation depth piece. Ryan held a 1.33 ERA and 18:9 K:BB over 20.1 innings covering four starts for the Dodgers in 2024.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Making progress in recovery

Ryan (elbow) has resumed throwing off a mound but hasn't yet progressed to full bullpen sessions, per MLB.com. Ryan is making gradual progress from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last August. A return to the big-league roster near the end of the regular season is a possibility if Ryan continues to proceed without any setbacks, but it's not a guarantee that he'll pitch for the Dodgers this season given the nature of his procedure.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Placed on 60-day IL

The Dodgers placed Ryan (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Ryan isn't expected to pitch in 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August. He'll concede his spot on the 40-man roster for Clayton Kershaw (toe), who officially re-signed with Los Angeles on Thursday.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Done for season

The Dodgers placed Ryan on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right forearm tightness, and manager Dave Roberts said the rookie will miss the rest of the 2024 season, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. Ryan is undergoing an MRI on Sunday to determine the full extent of the forearm injury that he suffered in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Pirates, but the Dodgers have apparently seen enough to rule him out for the rest of the campaign. It's a tough break for the 25-year-old, who was called up for his big-league debut in late July and posted a 1.33 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB over 20.1 innings through his first four starts.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: IL stint necessary

Ryan (forearm) will undergo an MRI on Sunday to discern the severity of his injury and will be placed on the injured list, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. Ryan was removed from Saturday's start against the Pirates in the fifth inning due to forearm tightness, and the injury is more significant than initially expected. The 25-year-old has shined in limited playing time for the Dodgers, posting a 1.33 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 15.2 innings, but his impressive rookie campaign will be paused for an uncertain amount of time. Sunday's MRI should give fantasy managers a more accurate timeline for Ryan's absence.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Lifted from start

The Dodgers removed Ryan from Saturday's game against the Pirates due to right forearm tightness, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. The Dodgers' training staff met Ryan on the mound in the middle of an at-bat in the fifth inning, and Ryan was ultimately removed from the contest due to pain in his right forearm. The 25-year-old threw 4.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and four hits allowed before exiting. Ryan should undergo further testing in the coming days, at which point the severity of the injury should be more clear.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Decent in no-decision

Ryan allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Sunday. Ryan yielded a two-run home run to Brent Rooker in the first inning and put traffic on the bases in three of the next four frames. After loading the bases with two outs in the fifth inning, Ryan was pulled at 75 pitches (48 strikes), and Evan Phillips escaped the jam. While it was the shortest of his three starts and the first time he's given up multiple runs, this wasn't necessarily a poor showing from Ryan. He has a 1.72 ERA despite a 1.28 WHIP and 14:9 K:BB over 15.2 innings. That walk rate is what portends the most trouble for him in the majors if he can't get it under control. Walker Buehler (hip) will require at least one more rehab start, so Ryan can tentatively be penciled in for a home start versus the Pirates next weekend.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Strong in second start

Ryan (1-0) allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out eight over 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Astros on Sunday. Ryan was responsible for one run after Alex Vesia allowed a two-run home run to Yainer Diaz in the sixth inning. While he again walked three batters, Ryan has acclimated well to the majors so far through two starts, allowing just two runs (one earned) over 11 innings. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters after the game that Ryan will take his next turn through the rotation even though the Dodgers have two off days next week, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. That means Ryan can be penciled in for a favorable road start at Oakland next weekend.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Penciled in for Sunday start

Ryan will start Sunday's game against the Astros, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Ryan will make his second career start after allowing an unearned run in 5.1 innings against the Giants in his MLB debut Monday. With Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw now healthy, it was unclear if Ryan would stick around for another start. However, Ryan now looks set to vie with Justin Wrobleski to remain the fifth starter once Walker Buehler (hip) returns from the injured list, though the Dodgers could have room for both if the team elects to deploy a six-man rotation.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Fares well in debut

Ryan allowed an unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out two over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Monday. A passed ball led to the only run on Ryan's line, as he made a pretty good first impression in the majors. He threw just 42 of 73 pitches for strikes however, and the three walks were a concern since he's displayed control issues throughout his minor-league career. It's unclear if the rookie right-hander will remain in the rotation, as the Dodgers are getting Tyler Glasnow (back) and Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) back soon. With two off days next week, it's unlikely the team goes with a six-man rotation for an extended period of time, so it may come down to Ryan or Justin Wrobleski for one spot until Walker Buehler (hip) is also ready to rejoin the team.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Added to roster ahead of debut

The Dodgers selected Ryan's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday. Ryan is expected to start Monday against the Giants in what will be his MLB debut. The 25-year-old right-hander missed the first two months of the minor-league season while battling shoulder fatigue but has looked sharp during his brief time with Oklahoma City, collecting a 2.76 ERA and 19:6 K:BB over 16.1 innings. Ryan could pitch again this weekend in Houston if the Dodgers elect to maintain a six-man rotation, but it could depend on how he fares Monday.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Set to get call-up after break

The Dodgers are planning to call Ryan up from Triple-A Oklahoma City following the All-Star break, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. The banged-up Dodgers closed their first-half schedule with just four healthy starting pitchers (James Paxton, Gavin Stone, Landon Knack and Justin Wrobleski), so Ryan will be summoned from Triple-A to provide some needed reinforcement. Tyler Glasnow (back) is eligible to come off the injured list as soon as July 21, and Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) might be ready for activation the following week, but Ryan could end up sticking around with the Dodgers as part of a five- or six-man rotation if he shows well in his first taste of the big leagues. The Dodgers haven't yet decided whether Ryan will start in the team's first series coming out of the break next weekend versus the Red Sox, or if he'll be saved for the four-game series against the Giants that begins July 22. A 25-year-old righty, Ryan missed the first two months of the minor-league season while battling shoulder fatigue but has looked good since joining Oklahoma City in mid-June, turning in a 2.76 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB over 16.1 innings spanning five starts.

  • Dodgers' River Ryan: Kicks off rehab assignment in ACL

Ryan (shoulder) began a rehab assignment Monday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, striking out five and allowing no hits and one walk over two scoreless innings. Ryan's appearance marked his 2024 debut after Triple-A Oklahoma City placed him on its 60-day injured list after he had battled right shoulder fatigue coming out of spring training. The right-hander will likely require multiple outings in the lower levels of the minors to get stretched back out before he slots into the Oklahoma City rotation.
