Schreiber (3-3) was charged with the loss and a blown save Thursday against the Guardians, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out one in 1.1 innings.
It's the third time already this month that Schreiber has permitted two runs in an outing, giving him a ghastly 12.46 ERA through 4.1 innings in September. With closer Carlos Estevez leading MLB in saves, Schreiber has fallen quite far out of contention for save chances in most scenarios at this stage of the campaign. Schreiber saw his strikeout rate dip to 20.5 percent in 2024 in his first year in Kansas City but remained useful with a 3.66 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 51.2 regular-season innings. He could be a nice source of holds (24 last year) ahead of Lucas Erceg and Carlos Estevez in the bullpen.

Schreiber has pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, earning a win, a save and a hold over three appearances since he returned from a knee injury. He's now at a 3.76 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 32:14 K:BB with two saves and 21 holds over 40.2 innings this year. Schreiber has allowed a lot of baserunners, but he's still been able to maintain a setup role in the Royals' struggling bullpen.
Schreiber earned the save in Monday's 5-3 victory over the Angels, working around a hit to pitch a shutout inning with no strikeouts.
The 30-year-old reliever saw immediate action in his first game back from a knee injury, collecting a save for the first time since May 10, which oddly, also came against the Angels. However, Schreiber likely will only serve as a backup closer going forward, as he spelled Lucas Erceg, who collected the two previous Kansas City saves, after Erceg fired 28 pitches in Sunday's contest. Overall, Schreiber now sports a 4.03 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 30:13 K:BB across 38 innings this season.

Schreiber got the final out of the seventh inning but put three straight batters on base to begin the eighth. James McArthur relieved him and couldn't stop the Padres' rally in what ended up being a nine-run frame. After looking like one of the Royals' most dominant relievers in April, Schreiber posted a much worse 6.52 ERA and 2.17 WHIP over 9.2 innings in May. He's at a decent 3.00 ERA on the year, but his 1.33 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB over 24 innings are concerning, as he's giving up too many hits and striking out too few batters. Schreiber has a save and 14 holds on the year while operating in a setup role.
