Top Jhostynxon Garcia News

  • Red Sox's Jhostynxon Garcia: Hitless in debut

Garcia went 0-for-3 with a walk and three strikeouts in Friday's 1-0 win over the Yankees.

Garcia made his MLB debut and started in right field at Yankee Stadium, becoming the first Red Sox prospect to make his major-league debut there since Mookie Betts in 2014. Garcia was originally listed in center field, but manager Alex Cora changed the lineup prior to the game. It's unclear if Cora plans to use the righty hitter solely against lefties. Friday's debut was against New York lefty Max Fried.

  • Red Sox's Jhostynxon Garcia: Batting fifth in MLB debut

Garcia is starting in center field and batting fifth Friday against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

The 22-year-old is receiving his first look in the majors and will make his debut in center field Friday versus New York lefty Max Fried. Garcia is one of Boston's top prospects and has a .303/.367/.564 slash line with 17 homers and two steals in 66 games at Triple-A Worcester this year.

  • Red Sox's Jhostynxon Garcia: Heading to majors

The Red Sox will recall Garcia from Triple-A Worcester prior to Thursday's game versus the Yankees, Katie Morrison-O'Day of MassLive.com reports.

Wilyer Abreu (calf) is heading to the 10-day injured list, and his roster spot will be absorbed by Garcia. The 22-year-old Garcia has slashed .289/.363/.512 with 20 home runs and six stolen bases between Double-A Portland and Worcester this season. Boston's outfield is pretty full already even with Abreu out, but the right-handed-hitting Garcia should at least get his fair share of opportunities against left-handed pitching.

  • Red Sox's Jhostynxon Garcia: Getting time at first base

Garcia started at first base and went 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and run scored for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.

Garcia was introduced to first base during pre-game work the last two weeks, per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, and Sunday was his debut at the position. There were no fielding issues, and he made a nice pick on a double play. Garcia is hitting at the Triple-A level, sporting a .308 average with a .945 OPS, but there's currently no room for him in Boston's outfield. Expanding his defensive versatility introduces another path to the majors, particularly at first base where the Red Sox are getting by with Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez. Of course, the pending signing of Nathaniel Lowe, who was designated for assignment by the Nationals over the weekend, could scuttle the notion of promoting Garcia to the majors and helping out at first base.

  • Red Sox's Jhostynxon Garcia: Handling Triple-A pitching

Garcia slugged his 19th home run of the season for Triple-A Worcester on Friday.

Garcia, who's belted 16 of his 19 homers at Triple-A, has handled the transition to the highest minor-league level without issue. He compiled a .748 OPS at Double-A Portland before his promotion, but he has a .951 OPS at Worcester. Garcia originally gained notoriety for his nickname "The Password", but he's emerged as a legitimate power prospect. He's hit seven home runs and drove in 23 runs with a 1.167 OPS over the last 15 games for the WooSox. Garcia leads the organization's affiliates in homers (19), RBI (66) and wRC+ (136).

  • Red Sox's Jhostynxon Garcia: Promoted to Triple-A

Garcia was promoted to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Garcia will make the jump to Triple-A after batting .256 with three home runs, 17 RBI, 19 runs scored and four stolen bases over 117 at-bats in 33 games with Double-A Portland this season. The 22-year-old will look to impress with Worcester in an attempt to get a shot with the Red Sox later this season.

  • Red Sox's Jhostynxon Garcia: Optioned to minors camp

The Red Sox optioned Garcia to minor-league camp Friday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Garcia struggled this spring, going 1-for-21 with a 10:0 K:BB. The 22-year-old finished the 2024 campaign at Double-A Portland and is likely headed back there to begin this season.

Garcia spent time at three different levels this season, slashing .286/.356/.536 with 23 home runs and 17 stolen bases. Slated to turn 22 in December, Garcia has experience at all three outfield spots and is now protected from the Rule 5 Draft.

  • Red Sox's Jhostynxon Garcia: Elevated to Double-A

The Red Sox promoted Garcia from High-A Greenville to Double-A Portland on Monday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

With three of the Red Sox's top prospects in Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel and Marcelo Mayer making the move up to Triple-A Worcester, Garcia will receive a promotion of his own to fill one of the vacant roster spots at Portland. The 21-year-old outfielder will be moving up to his third affiliate of the season after beginning the campaign at Single-A Salem before joining Greenville in late May and slashing .311/.371/.632 with 16 home runs in 229 plate appearances during his time in the South Atlantic League.
