Braves' JR Ritchie: Returns to big club as reliever
Atlanta recalled Ritchie from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday.
One day after being optioned to Triple-A, Ritchie will rejoin Atlanta after Martin Perez exited his start in Sunday's loss to the Mets due to a forearm contusion and was moved to the 15-day injured list. Though the loss of Perez creates a need for a fifth starter, Bryce Elder is expected to slot back into the rotation during the upcoming week after having his previous turn skipped. As such, Ritchie will serve as a multi-inning option out of the Atlanta bullpen for the team's final seven games before the All-Star break, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com.

Braves' JR Ritchie: Headed back to Triple-A
Atlanta optioned Ritchie to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.
Ritchie's stay with Atlanta lasted just one day, with the 23-year-old righty working out of the bullpen in Saturday's 14-3 win over the Mets and striking out four over three scoreless innings en route to collecting his first career save. Atlanta called up Carlos Carrasco from Triple-A in a corresponding move while Ritchie slots back into the rotation at Gwinnett.

Ritchie was scratched from his scheduled start with Gwinnett on Saturday and will join the big club in Atlanta to provide a fresh arm out of the bullpen. Over eight appearances (seven starts) with the big club on the season, Ritchie owns a 4.87 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 40.2 innings.

Ritchie is set to join Atlanta after he was scratched from his scheduled start with Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday, Lindsay Crosby of BravesToday.com reports.
Crosby relays that Ritchie joining Atlanta's 26-man roster will likely correspond with Bryce Elder being placed on the 15-day injured list after the latter's turn in the rotation was skipped due to arm fatigue. Ritchie has split his time between the majors and Triple-A this season, and across eight appearances (seven starts) with Atlanta, he has a 1-2 record with a 4.87 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 37:25 K:BB across 40.2 innings.

Braves' JR Ritchie: Sent back to Triple-A
Atlanta optioned Ritchie to Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday.
Ritchie's second stint in the big leagues lasted two weeks, with the young righty posting a 5.40 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB in 15 innings across two starts and one relief appearance. Due to off days Thursday and Monday, Atlanta should be able to get by with four starters in the short term before filling Ritchie's vacated spot in the rotation late next week. Hurston Waldrep has given up just one run in 7.2 innings over two starts for Gwinnett since being reinstated from the 60-day injured list earlier this month and would be a logical choice to replace Ritchie in the big-league rotation.

Braves' JR Ritchie: Middling performance Tuesday
Ritchie allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus San Diego on Tuesday.
Ritchie wasn't particularly good in this performance, though the seven strikeouts matched his season high. He was at least able to keep the ball down better after giving up three home runs in his last start against the Giants. Ritchie has a 4.87 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 37:25 K:BB through 40.2 innings over eight games (seven starts). Despite the underwhelming numbers, Atlanta needs him in the rotation while the team waits for Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach and AJ Smith-Shawver to return from their respective elbow injuries. Ritchie is tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus St. Louis and could continue to start through July as long as he shows some promise.

Ritchie will receive another turn through the rotation, despite a lackluster showing in his return to a starting role his last time out Wednesday, when he took a loss against the Giants after yielding five earned runs on five hits and three walks across five innings. Though the rookie right-hander has turned in underwhelming ratios (4.54 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 30:21 K:BB) over his first 35.2 innings in the big leagues, he'll have a pathway to making multiple starts while none of Spencer Strider (elbow), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) and AJ Smith-Shawver (elbow) are particularly close to returning from the 60-day injured list.

Braves' JR Ritchie: Struggles in loss
Ritchie (1-2) was tagged with the loss Wednesday in the 7-5 defeat to the Giants after he allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four in five innings.
Ritchie was tagged for five runs early as he gave up three home runs in the first two innings Wednesday. This was Ritchie's first start since being recalled from the minors last week. The 22-year-old was also a bit wild in the game, throwing strikes on only 54 of his 90 pitches and issuing at least three free passes for a fourth time in seven MLB outings. Spencer Strider's (elbow) presence on the injured list should allow Ritchie to pick up another start next week in San Diego.

Braves' JR Ritchie: Entering rotation Wednesday
Ritchie is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Giants in Atlanta, Chad Bishop of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
After being recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett, Ritchie joined the Atlanta bullpen and made just his second relief appearance since entering the professional ranks in 2022. He ended up piggybacking injured starter Spencer Strider (elbow) in Friday's loss to the Mets, striking out five batters and scattering two hits and two walks over five innings. With Strider landing on the injured list a day later, Ritchie will now be called upon to fill the open spot in the rotation. Strider lacks a clear timeline for a return, so Ritchie should be in line for multiple starts with the big club.

Braves' JR Ritchie: Looks good in long relief
Ritchie gave up two hits and two walks over five scoreless relief innings in Friday's loss to the Mets. He struck out five.
The rookie right-hander finished out the game after Spencer Strider (forearm) was pulled following a leadoff walk to MJ Melendez in the bottom of the fourth inning while showing greatly diminished velocity. Strider has already been placed on the IL and is being sent for an MRI on Saturday, and Ritchie's impressive relief performance over 73 pitches (42 strikes) makes him the logical candidate to move into the rotation. Over 30.2 innings in the majors this season, Ritchie has a 3.82 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 26:18 K:BB.

The rookie right-hander turned in his worst major-league start so far, surrendering a season-high six runs in a season-low four innings. Braves' JR Ritchie: No-decision vs. Cubs
Ritchie did not factor into Wednesday's decision against the Cubs, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out four across 4.1 innings.
Ritchie kept the Cubs off the board through the first four innings of Wednesday's game. He allowed two baserunners in the fifth before being replaced by Tyler Kinley, with the latter giving up an RBI single to Nico Hoerner for the Cubs' only run of the game. Ritchie ran up his pitch count to 87 while tossing 53 strikes (60.9 percent strike rate), but he failed to complete five frames for the first time through four MLB starts.
