  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Earns win in relief

Hurter (4-3) worked around a hit to toss 1.1 scoreless innings of relief and earn the win Thursday against the Guardians. He struck out two. Detroit starter Troy Melton only covered 3.2 innings before Hurter came on and worked through the fifth in a critical game that saw the Tigers tie the Guardians atop the AL Central. The lefty logged his 12th game without allowing an earned run in his last 13 appearances, and he now has a sparkling 2.47 ERA for the season. Hurter has also struck out 66 batters in 62 innings this year, making him one of the top weapons in Detroit's bullpen for the second straight season.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Back with big-league club

Hurter was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, per MLB's transactions log. Hurter missed time at the end of August due to a back injury, but he's since returned to health and will now get a chance to help the major-league team down the stretch of the regular season. He's performed well in his last 10 appearances for Detroit, posting a 1.20 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 16 strikeouts over 15.0 innings.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Healthy again at Triple-A

Hurter (back) has allowed four earned runs on five hits and no walks while striking out two batters over 3.2 innings in three appearances for Triple-A Toledo since being reinstated from the 7-day injured list Sept. 6. Hurter missed a little under two weeks due to the back issue, so he didn't require a rehab assignment at a lower-level affiliate before he made his return to the Toledo bullpen. The Tigers demoted Hurter to Triple-A on Aug. 17 in what appeared to mostly be a roster-management decision, as the southpaw had turned in a 2.45 ERA with 62 punchouts over 58.2 innings with the big club on the season. However, with Hurter having since picked up the back injury and not yet pitching effectively for Toledo since his return from the IL, the Tigers haven't been motivated to call him back up.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Rehab assignment pending

Hurter (back) could start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo this weekend, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Hurter was sent down to Triple-A on Aug. 17 and was placed on the injured list with back soreness without making an appearance for Toledo. The 26-year-old has posted a 2.45 ERA in 58.2 innings with the Tigers this season, and once healthy, he's expected to rejoin the big-league bullpen for the tail end of the regular season.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Placed on minor-league IL

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that Hurter was placed on Triple-A Toledo's 7-day injured list Sunday due to lower back soreness, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Hurter hasn't pitched since being sent down to Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 17, which is now understood to be the result of a back issue. The left-hander has posted a 2.45 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 62 strikeouts over 58.2 innings in 38 appearances with the Tigers this season. Hurter is still likely to be a part of Detroit's major-league plans in September, so the team will take a cautious approach with him while he manages the back injury.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Tigers optioned Hurter to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. Hurter hasn't given up an earned run in his past nine appearances and has a 2.45 ERA in 38 major-league appearances this season, so it's a tough-luck demotion for the left-hander. The 26-year-old also had a 2.58 ERA over 45.1 innings with the Tigers in 2024, so he should be back up with Detroit before the end of the season.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Records hold Saturday

Hurter tossed a scoreless inning of relief to record a hold in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Guardians. After starter Casey Mize dazzled over seven scoreless innings, Hurter worked the eighth for his third hold of the year before Tommy Kahnle closed things out in the ninth. Hurter has been a bit rocky recently, allowing 12 runs (six earned) across seven innings in his last eight appearances. However, the lefty's numbers on the season are still strong, as he's sitting with a 2.72 ERA and 45 strikeouts through 43 innings out of Detroit's bullpen.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Takes loss as opener

Hurter (2-3) allowed four runs (no earned) on two hits and two walks while retiring only two batters to take the loss Saturday against the Rays. He also hit a batter. Hurter served as the opener but struggled with control and couldn't complete the first inning. He was ultimately pulled after tossing 31 pitches (16 for strikes) and hitting his fifth batter of the year while also matching a season high in walks. The lefty has now allowed 11 runs across 10 innings pitched this month, though only four of them have been earned, and he still has a solid 2.29 ERA overall. Hurter should continue to work as a valuable reliever for the Tigers who also opens games on occasion.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Opening for Tigers on Friday

Hurter will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher in Friday's game against the Reds, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. It will be the second "start" this week for Hurter, who allowed one run over 2.2 innings Tuesday in Baltimore. Hurter has recorded more than three outs in 16 of 19 appearances this season, so he's capable of providing a little more length than your typical opener. Keider Montero is expected to handle a bulk relief role for Detroit.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Getting start in bullpen game

Hurter will start Wednesday against the Cardinals in what's expected to be a bullpen game for the Tigers, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Hurter frequently served as a bulk reliever for the Tigers in the second half of 2024, but he's occupied a more traditional relief role through the first two months of this season after missing out on a spot in the Opening Day rotation. The 26-year-old southpaw has pitched well over his 13 appearances, compiling a 2.35 ERA and 0.96 WHIP across 23 frames. He hasn't tossed more than 30 pitches in an appearance since April 26, so Hurter may not be asked to work deep enough into Wednesday's start to qualify for a win.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Another three-inning save Tuesday

Hurter picked up the save in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Yankees, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing two hits and a walk. He struck out three. Hurter entered in the seventh protecting a 5-0 lead and went on to blank the Yankees for another three innings. He now has two three-inning saves in his last two appearances, though those came over a week apart. Hurter owns a 3.68 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 6:1 K:BB in 7.1 innings so far this season.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Competing for last bullpen opening

Hurter, Brenan Hanifee and Andrew Chafin are likely competing for Detroit's final bullpen spot to begin the regular season, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Hurter and Chafin are both southpaws, which could give them an edge, though the righty Hanifee impressed for the Tigers last year with a 1.84 ERA across 29.1 regular-season innings. Ultimately, all three players figure to see time in the majors this season, as the team needs bullpen reinforcements. Hurter pitched well last year during his MLB debut, compiling a 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 45.1 regular-season innings.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Bullpen spot less secure?

With Andrew Chafin joining the Tigers on a minor-league deal last month, Hurter's roster spot could be in jeopardy coming out of camp, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. The lefty Hurter pitched well last year during his MLB debut, compiling a 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 45.1 regular-season innings. However, the 34-year-old Chafin has a lot more MLB experience, which could lead the Tigers to choose him as a southpaw for their bullpen to complement the likes of Tyler Holton and Sean Guenther. Hurter still probably has a leg up in the competition, though he'd likely feel more secure if he strung together some strong outings to wrap up the spring slate.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: May work in swing role in 2025

While he will compete for a regular rotation spot during spring training, Hurter and Kenta Maeda may end up splitting bulk-relief duties, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. With the Tigers recently adding Jack Flaherty to the mix, they now have a surplus of starting options. Flaherty, Tarik Skubal and Reese Olson all figure to be locked into the rotation. Behind them, Detroit has the likes of Hurter, Alex Cobb, Jackson Jobe, Casey Mize and Keider Montero. With the exception of Jobe, who made his MLB debut toward the end of last year and appeared in just two regular-season contests, all of the other pitchers started games in 2024. The veteran Cobb should snag a rotation spot in the early going, which leaves plenty of players vying for one role. Jobe has the most upside of the bunch and could run away with the job if he impresses, though manager A.J. Hinch may mix and match and use some pitchers in bulk relief. The lefty Hurter and righty Maeda could be a natural pairing in that scenario, with the two potentially working together in some contests.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Picks up win Friday

Hurter (6-1) allowed one run on two hits across four innings of relief to earn the win Friday against the White Sox. He struck out one. Hurter followed opener Brenan Hanifee, who completed two scoreless innings, and pitched well to record his sixth win through 10 appearances while punching Detroit's playoff ticket. Hurter has had a nice rookie campaign, posting a stellar 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 45.1 innings, often working in bulk relief. It remains to be seen how the Tigers structure their pitching staff for the postseason, but the 26-year-old has likely earned a prominent role based on his strong performance.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Gets win in long relief

Hurter (4-1) got the win in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Oakland. He allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out three over 5.1 innings. Brenan Hanifee took the ball as the opener and faced the first three hitters before Hurter came on and took the game through the sixth inning. Hurter has one start in his first seven career appearances, but he's still managed to pick up wins in each of his last four games. The rookie left-hander has now pitched at least five innings in five of his seven appearances. Hurter has yet to allow more than three runs in any game and has a 3.00 ERA through 33 innings this season.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Stymies Red Sox for third win

Hurter (3-1) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on six hits in five innings against the Tigers. He struck out five. Hurter was moved back into a bulk-relief role after making his first career start last time out, coming just a two-out Jarren Duran RBI single in the fifth inning away from holding the Red Sox off the board. It was the fourth time in six appearances this season that Hurter has tossed at least five innings, with Sunday's performance representing the first time he's allowed as few as one run during those appearances. Hurter lowered his ERA to 3.25 with a 0.94 WHIP and 26 strikeouts over 27.2 innings. Either as a starter or in a bulk-relief role, Hurter figures to make his next appearance when the Tigers travel to Oakland to take on the A's.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Strikes out five as bulk reliever

Hurter covered six innings out of the bullpen in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Yankees, giving up two earned runs on four hits and no walks while striking out five. He didn't factor into the decision. Hurter has yet to make a start for the Tigers, as he's been deployed in bulk relief in each of his three appearances for the big club while covering three, five and six innings in those outings. Even though Hurter is a de facto member of the rotation at the moment, it's unclear if the Tigers plan to use him as a traditional starter at any point. He's pitched well in his limited opportunities thus far with a 3.21 ERA and 0.79 WHIP over 14 innings, but he's still looking for his first MLB win.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Promotion imminent

The Tigers will select Hurter's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Hurter is scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Royals, but manager A.J. Hinch said that Hurter will be working behind an opener. The trade deadline left Detroit with just two starters in its rotation, so it's possible Hurter could stick around in the majors if he performs well Sunday. The 25-year-old southpaw has put up a 5.80 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through 71.1 innings in Triple-A this season.

  • Tigers' Brant Hurter: Could be factor this year

Hurter could force his way into the MLB bullpen conversation if he impresses during camp, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Hurter played at three minor-league levels in 2023, topping out at Double-A, where he posted a 10.1 K/9. The lefty has had a K/9 of 10.0 or higher at all four levels he's appeared at over the past two seasons, and he's shown an ability to consistently retire left-handed hitters. Hurter is unlikely to skip Triple-A entirely, but if he looks good in camp and in the early going during the regular season, he may be able to go through the level quickly and make his MLB debut at some point this summer.
