  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Picks up second save

Ashby allowed a run on one hit and a walk over 3.1 innings Tuesday, striking out two and earning a save against the Cubs. Ashby entered the sixth inning with two outs and two runners in scoring position. He forced a Matt Shaw pop out to end the threat and would go on to finish the contest. Ashby threw 42 pitches and earned his first save since June 12. He now owns a 2.05 ERA with a 33:12 K:BB through 30.2 frames out of the bullpen. Ashby helped give Milwaukee's other relief arms some rest in Tuesday's 9-3 win and won't see many traditional save chances.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Returns from paternity leave

The Brewers reinstated Ashby (personal) from the paternity list Monday. Ashby will rejoin the Brewers to begin the second half after he missed the final three games before the All-Star break to observe the birth of his child. Through 13 appearances out of the Milwaukee bullpen this season, Ashby has compiled a 1.66 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB in 21.2 innings while collecting one win and one save.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Moves to paternity list

The Brewers placed Ashby on the paternity list Friday. The left-hander will step away from the team ahead of the final series before the All-Star break in order to be with his growing family. Ashby should be back with the Brewers by the start of the second half next week.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Moves past hand injury

Ashby (hand) retired one batter and allowed one earned run on one hit and two walks in his relief appearance during Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Dodgers. Ashby's pitching hand was struck by a comebacker during his previous appearance in Monday's series opener with the Dodgers, but he avoided any significant damage and received the green light to pitch just two days later. Even though he wasn't at his best Wednesday, Ashby continues to hold down sterling ratios (1.66 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 22.1 K-BB%) in 21.2 innings out of the Milwaukee bullpen since returning in late May from a season-opening stint on the injured list.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: X-rays return negative

X-rays on Ashby's left hand came back negative after being struck with a comebacker during Monday's appearance against the Dodgers, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Ashby took a comebacker off his pitching hand during the seventh inning but managed to remain in the game. Further imaging revealed that he avoided a significant injury, though he should be considered day-to-day until the club has a chance to re-evaluate and clear the southpaw to return to the mound.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Credited with first save Thursday

Ashby gave up three hits and no walks in three scoreless innings of relief, earning the save in Thursday's 6-0 win over the Cardinals. It was the first save of the season for Ashby, who fired at least three innings for the first time in 2025. The 27-year-old left-hander is currently being deployed as a multi-inning reliever, but he's mostly worked in lower-leverage spots since coming off the injured list. Through nine innings on the season, Ashby has zero holds but has yet to give up a run while notching a 0.78 WHIP and 9:1 K:BB.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Reinstated from IL

The Brewers reinstated Ashby (oblique) from the 15-day injured list Friday. Ashby is set to make his 2025 MLB debut after beginning the season on the injured list due to a right oblique strain. During his five-outing rehab stint between the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and Triple-A Nashville, Ashby made all but one of his appearances out of the bullpen and didn't cover more than two innings in any of those games, so he looks set to fill a relief role for Milwaukee after having previously made 25 starts at the big-league level from 2021 through 2024.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Shifting rehab to Triple-A

Ashby (oblique) will move his rehab assignment to Triple-A Nashville on Sunday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby started the season on the injured list due to a right oblique strain he suffered in mid-March. He was recently cleared to embark on a rehab assignment, and in his lone outing in the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday he allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one over 1.1 innings. The 26-year-old southpaw is aiming to toss about three innings Sunday, and he'll likely need multiple rehab outings before he's cleared to return to the majors.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Cleared for rehab assignment

Ashby (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with the Brewers' Arizona Complex League affiliate on Tuesday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby has been out since early March with a right oblique strain but has finally been cleared to appear in a game. The left-hander's rehab assignment figures to be a lengthy one given how much time he's missed, but he could be back before the end of May. Ashby was competing for a spot in the Brewers' rotation before he got hurt, but it's not clear whether they'll bring him back as a starter or reliever.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Throwing bullpen session Tuesday

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Monday that Ashby (oblique) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Jack Stern of BrewerFanatic.com reports. The lefty will then progress to live batting practice sessions and then pitching in extended spring training games. Assuming that all goes well, Ashby should then be ready for a rehab assignment. The southpaw has been out since early March with a right oblique strain.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Should resume mound work April 11

Ashby (oblique) is continuing to build up during his throwing program and should be ready to throw a bullpen session April 11, MLB.com reports. Ashby entered spring training with a chance to compete for a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but he never gained much momentum after tweaking his right oblique in his third Cactus League appearance March 3. He was shut down for a couple weeks before resuming his throwing program late in camp, and he seems to be gradually increasing his throwing distance off flat ground. Ashby is one six starters on the 40-man roster who currently resides on the injured list, but Jose Quintana should be ready to make his season debut next week, and Tobias Myers (oblique), Aaron Civale (hamstring) and Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) all appear likely to beat Ashby back from the IL. With that in mind, Ashby could be ticketed for the bullpen or the Triple-A Nashville rotation once he's back to full health.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Opens season on IL

The Brewers placed Ashby (oblique) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Ashby sustained a right oblique strain March 3 and wasn't able to bounce back from the injury as quickly as the Brewers had hoped, which will result in him opening the season on the shelf. The southpaw wasn't expected to resume his throwing program until this week, and since he's likely to be stretched out as a starter, he could be a month or longer away from being ready to return from the IL. Ashby has a minor-league option remaining, so the Brewers could send him to Triple-A Nashville if the big club doesn't have a spot for him in the rotation by the time he's activated.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Shut down for two weeks

Ashby (oblique) will be shut down for about two weeks before resuming a throwing program, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Ashby said Friday that the second opinion on his right oblique strain was more favorable than the first, but he will still need some down time and will not be ready for Opening Day. The left-hander anticipates being stretched back out as a starting pitcher, but it's unclear what his role will be with the Brewers once he's healthy.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Seeking second opinion on injury

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that Ashby (oblique) will receive a second opinion on his injury in the coming days, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. After Ashby exited Monday in his most recent Cactus League appearance, he was sent in Tuesday for an MRI, which revealed a left oblique strain. The grade of the strain remains undetermined, however, and Murphy said he's hopeful that Ashby's second opinion brings more clarity on that front. Once the Brewers know the full scope of Ashby's injury, a clearer timeline for his return will likely be established, but even a minor oblique strain would likely put the southpaw on the outside looking in for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Joins big-league club

The Brewers recalled Ashby from Triple-A Nashville on Sunday. The left-hander has started in 14 of his 25 appearances for Nashville this season, and he's recently been operating out of the bullpen. Ashby has delivered six straight scoreless appearances at Triple-A and has a 14:1 K:BB during that stretch. He'll step into a relief role for the Brewers, taking the roster spot of Nick Mears (forearm).

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Optioned to Triple-A

The Brewers optioned Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Friday. The Brewers are down multiple starters due to injury, so this move seems to reflect their lack of faith in Ashby. The left-hander made a start Wednesday against the Phillies, allowing just two runs but walking five over five innings. He will remain stretched out in the Nashville rotation.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Fights control in loss

Ashby (0-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Brewers were downed 2-0 by the Phillies, giving up two runs on two hits and five walks over five innings. He struck out three. The southpaw was recalled from Triple-A Nashville earlier in the day but had trouble finding the plate, tossing 49 of 91 pitches for strikes, and Ashby eventually paid for the free passes in the fifth inning when Garrett Stubbs led off the frame with a walk before Nick Castellanos clubbed a two-run homer. With Robert Gasser (elbow) the latest Milwaukee pitcher to land on the IL, Ashby figures to get multiple turns in the rotation. He lines up to make his next outing at home early next week against the Blue Jays.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Could start Wednesday vs. Phillies

Ashby joined the Brewers' taxi squad in Philadelphia and could be formally called up from Triple-A Nashville to start or work as a bulk reliever in Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Ashby appears poised to slide into the rotation spot that belonged to Robert Gasser, who is awaiting a second opinion on his sore elbow and is expected to land on the 15-day injured list and miss out on at least a couple of starts. In his lone start for Milwaukee this season back on April 9 in Cincinnati, Ashby was blitzed for eight runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings. Upon returning to Nashville after that game, Ashby continued to struggle in his subsequent seven outings at Triple-A (9.54 ERA, 2.54 WHIP and 30:30 K:BB in 26.1 innings), but he's righted the ship over his past two starts. He delivered his best performance of the season in his most recent of the two starts Friday versus Memphis, striking out five over seven scoreless frames while allowing two hits and three walks. With Gasser set to go on the shelf and the Brewers still waiting on Joe Ross (back), Jakob Junis (shoulder) and DL Hall (knee) to return from the IL, Ashby could be in store for multiple turns through the rotation if he fares reasonably well Wednesday.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Roughed up in loss

Ashby (0-1) took the loss Monday, allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out two. Ashby faced a tough test Monday night against the Reds on the road for his first major-league appearance since October 2022. The 25-year-old left-hander also worked with a significantly diminished pitch arsenal compared to 2022, as his sinker averaged only 93.6 mph, down 2.1 mph. Ashby should continue to occupy a place in the Brewers rotation until Jakob Junis (shoulder) is healthy. He is scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Orioles.

  • Brewers' Aaron Ashby: Roughed up in spring debut

Ashby (shoulder) retired one of the six batters he faced and gave up four runs (three earned) on two hits and one walk Saturday in the Brewers' 11-3 loss to the Dodgers in Cactus League play. Ashby is getting the chance to compete for a spot in the Brewers' Opening Day rotation after he missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from the left shoulder surgery he underwent last April. Though he was deployed in relief in his spring debut, Ashby still saw a healthy workload Saturday, as he tossed 24 pitches (12 strikes) while facing six hitters. Unsurprisingly, Ashby looked rusty while pitching in a competitive setting for the first time since October 2022, but the Brewers are hoping that he'll be able to iron out the kinks over his subsequent spring appearances. Ashby still has two minor-league options remaining, so the Brewers could send him to Triple-A Nashville to begin the 2024 campaign if they're not confident that he's ready to pitch effectively at the big-league level by late March.
