  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Removed from 40-man roster

The Angels designated Quijada for assignment Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The move frees up a spot on the 26-man active roster and 40-man roster after the Angels acquired relievers Luis Garcia and Andrew Chafin from the Nationals on Wednesday. Quijada had tossed 1.1 scoreless frames covering two relief appearances with the Halos.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Selected from Double-A

The Angels selected the contract of Quijada from Double-A Rocket City on Thursday. The Angels outrighted Quijada to Triple-A Salt Lake at the end of March after he cleared waivers. He was later assigned to Double-A Rocket City on May 10. Since then, the 29-year-old has posted a 2.73 ERA with a 39:9 K:BB in 26.1 innings through 27 games. In a corresponding move Thursday, the Angels optioned Jake Eder to Triple-A Salt Lake.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Clears waivers

The Angels outrighted Quijada to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday after he cleared waivers. Quijada was cast off the Angels' 40-man roster last week, when Los Angeles needed to free up a spot for right-handed reliever Ryan Johnson. After attracting no interest on the waiver wire, Quijada will remain in the Angels organization and serve as bullpen depth in the upper levels of the minors.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Avoids arbitration with Halos

The Angels and Quijada avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $1.075 million contract Tuesday. The deal also includes a $3.75 million club option for 2026. Quijada, 29, has missed much of the last two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he returned in late July this past season and posted a 3.26 ERA and 24:17 K:BB over 19.1 innings. He could see some high-leverage relief work for the Angels in 2025.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Hurls scoreless frame in 2024 debut

Quijada allowed one walk in a scoreless inning Wednesday versus Seattle. Quijada's outing was his first in the big leagues since he underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2023. The left-hander struggled a bit with his control in throwing just nine of 17 pitches for strikes, but he faced the minimum three batters, as a leadoff walk was wiped out on a double play. Quijada pitched in the sixth inning Wednesday, though he could eventually work his way up to higher-leverage work if he's able to string together a series of effective outings.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Starts rehab assignment

Quijada (elbow) struck out the side in his first rehab appearance with the Angels' Arizona Complex League affiliate Wednesday. It's a promising start as Quijada continues down the comeback trail from last May's Tommy John surgery. The left-hander will eventually move up to a higher affiliate and figures to need most, if not all, of the 30-day allotment for his rehab assignment.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Continues progressing toward return

Quijada (elbow) threw to hitters in a live bullpen session Tuesday and tossed a live batting practice session Friday, MLB.com reports. Since taking a pre-planned break from throwing for a week between late May and early June, Quijada has tossed a 25-pitch standard bullpen session along with the pair of sessions against live hitters. He's now nearly 13 months removed from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last season and appears to be doing well in his recovery. If Quijada continues to progress without any setbacks, he could rejoin the Angels bullpen before the All-Star break.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Tossing bullpens

Quijada (elbow) threw bullpen sessions May 17 and May 21, MLB.com reports. Quijada is making his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent May 17, 2023. He's been rehabbing at the Angels' training facility in Arizona and could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list in early July. Quijada will likely take on a low-leverage spot in the Angels bullpen upon his return.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Continues progress toward return

Quijada (elbow) is in Arizona to continue his throwing progression and could return by midseason, per MLB.com. Quijada underwent Tommy John surgery last May, so he's now over 10 months into his recovery. The lefty hurler has been throwing from 60 feet as he takes incremental steps toward a return. If all goes well for Quijada, he could rejoin the Angels' bullpen around the beginning of July.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Shifts to 60-day IL

Quijada (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Sunday. The left-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last May and is poised to be sidelined for the first half of 2024, so his move to the 60-day IL is hardly a surprise. Quijada had a 3.98 ERA with three saves and 12 holds for the Angels in 2022 and could see some high-leverage chances once healthy.

Quijada (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on his left elbow May 17, per MLB.com. An MRI and multiple doctors' opinions in early May determined that Quijada needed the season-ending procedure. Quijada (elbow) was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list by the Angels on Monday. It's a procedural move that clears room on the 40-man roster, and the Angels needed it to selected the contract of Cesar Valdez on Monday. Quijada will miss the rest of the 2023 season after it was revealed that the left-hander will need to undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Will undergo Tommy John surgery

Angels manager Phil Nevin told reporters before Wednesday's game against the Cardinals that Quijada (elbow) will need Tommy John surgery, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Quijada sought a second opinion from doctors, and it appears that both groups recommended the reconstructive elbow surgery. The left-handed reliever will miss the rest of the 2023 campaign and he'll likely miss time to begin the 2024 season as well.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Ligament damage found in MRI

Angels manager Phil Nevin said Tuesday that an MRI on Quijada's left elbow reviewed some ligament damage, but the southpaw will receive a second opinion before it will be determined whether he'll need to have surgery, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Registerreports. Nevin called the first opinion that Quijada received "discouraging," based on the report provided by doctors. Quijada will get the second opinion before an announcement is made regarding the severity of the injury and whether it will require surgery. Even if a procedure isn't deemed necessary, the 27-year-old appears likely to be sidelined beyond the minimum 15 days.

  • Angels' Jose Quijada: Placed on IL with elbow issue

Quijada was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Angels on Friday with left elbow soreness. Quijada told reporters that he felt sore when he woke up Friday. • Angels' Jose Quijada: Implodes for first blown save

Quijada (0-1) blew the save and took the loss against the Royals on Saturday, allowing five runs on two hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning. Quijada had been great this season coming into Saturday, holding opponents scoreless and notching four saves while posting an 8:1 BB:K over eight innings. However, he couldn't seal the deal in the ninth inning against Kansas City, allowing six of the eight batters he faced to reach base. The southpaw plunked two hitters and walked another two while throwing just 15 of 27 pitches for strikes, so he clearly didn't have his stuff working for him. Despite the poor outing, Quijada's strong start to the campaign should allow him to remain in contention for save chances alongside Carlos Estevez for the Angels.
