  • Rangers' Nicky Lopez: Could lose playing time

Lopez started at second base and 1-for-1 before being lifted for a pinch hitter in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Marlins. Lopez has been a frequent presence at second base and started every game there after the team optioned Josh Smith to Triple-A Round Rock. That opportunity could close as soon as Thursday. That's when shortstop Corey Seager (concussion) is expected rejoin the club; his return means Texas manager Skip Schumaker will need a home for Ezequiel Duran, who has served as the fill-in shortstop.

  • Rangers' Nicky Lopez: Scores twice in win

Lopez went 2-for-2 with two runs scored in Sunday's 4-3 win over San Diego. Lopez singled and scored runs in the third and fourth innings. He made a third consecutive start at second base and hit safely in his last four appearances. Lopez is slashing .333/.367/.404 with one home run, five RBI, two steals in six runs scored over 20 games since singing with Texas as a free agent late in May. With Josh Smith having been optioned, second base is wide open for the left-handed hitting Lopez.

  • Rangers' Nicky Lopez: Claiming third straight start

Lopez will start at second base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Padres. Lopez will remain in the starting nine for a third straight game after he went 2-for-7 over the first two contests of the series. The 31-year-old journeyman could be in store for a regular role until Texas gets Corey Seager (concussion) back from the 7-day injured list.

  • Rangers' Nicky Lopez: Steps in at shortstop

Lopez started at shortstop and went 1-for-3 in Monday's 4-2 loss to the Twins. Lopez filled in at shortstop after the Rangers placed Corey Seager on the 7-day concussion list. Lopez should share starts with Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran while Seager is sidelined.

  • Rangers' Nicky Lopez: Sitting after four straight starts

Lopez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. Though Corey Seager (ribs/jaw) will be left out of the starting nine for a third straight game, the left-handed-hitting Lopez will head to the bench while the Red Sox send a lefty (Connelly Early) to the hill. Lopez had started in each of the last four games, and he could have a path to seeing at least semi-regular work even if Seager avoids a stint on the injured list. Texas already moved Evan Carter (oblique) to the IL on Saturday, which could free up more reps at second base for Lopez if super-utility man Ezequiel Duran ends up seeing more time in the outfield in the short term. Since signing with Texas on May 27, Lopez is slashing .317/.364/.415 with one home run, one steal, five RBI and four runs in 13 games.

  • Rangers' Nicky Lopez: Sticks at second base

Lopez went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 6-3 win over Kansas City. Lopez made a fifth consecutive start at second base and has hit safely in the last three contests, going 5-for-11 with a home run and three RBI during that stretch. The keystone was looking like a good fit for Justin Foscue until the Rangers acquired the left-handed hitting Lopez, who appears to be the choice against right-handers. Texas faces a sixth straight right-hander Monday, when it is scheduled to face St. Louis right-hander Michael McGreevy.

  • Rangers' Nicky Lopez: Starts third straight game

Lopez started at second base and went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Friday's 9-1 win over the Royals. The left-handed-hitting Lopez, who started a third consecutive game at second base since signing with the Rangers, connected for his first hit in a Texas uniform. All three of the starts have come against right-handers, indicating he may be involved in a platoon at the keystone with Justin Foscue.

  • Rangers' Nicky Lopez: Second straight start

Lopez will start at second base and bat ninth in Thursday's contest versus the Astros. Lopez was signed to a major-league contract Wednesday and has now made two straight starts at second base (both against righties). The 31-year-old has slashed only .227/.298/.280 in 1,223 regular-season plate appearances at the major-league level since the start of the 2022 season, but he's got a steady glove and the Rangers are opting for defense over offense at the keystone.

  • Rangers' Nicky Lopez: Finds work with Texas

Lopez signed a one-year contract with the Rangers on Wednesday. Lopez elected free agency earlier this week after being waived by the Cubs and quickly reached an agreement with the Rockies on a minor-league deal, but he never finalized the contract with Colorado before the big-league opportunity with Texas became available. Though he'll enter the lineup right away for the Rangers as their starting second baseman and No. 9 hitter in Wednesday's game against the Astros, he's unlikely to see consistent at-bats with Texas. Instead, Lopez is expected to provide most of his value as a late-inning defensive replacement who's capable of covering three infield positions.

  • Cubs' Nicky Lopez: Sent outright to Triple-A

The Cubs outrighted Lopez to Triple-A Iowa on Monday. Lopez lost his spot on the 40-man roster Saturday, and after going unclaimed on waivers, he'll stay in the organization and will report to Iowa. He's batting .333 with one home run, eight RBI, two stolen bases and 11 runs scored in 15 appearances so far this season at Triple-A.

  • Cubs' Nicky Lopez: Dropped from 40-man

The Cubs designated Lopez for assignment Saturday. Lopez appeared in just four games for the Cubs and went 0-for-5 after joining the active roster April 24. He'll now be jettisoned from the big club to make room for Kevin Alcantara, who was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday.

  • Cubs' Nicky Lopez: Contract selected

The Cubs selected Lopez's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. The Cubs acquired Lopez in a trade with Colorado on Thursday, and they'll now bring him up to provide depth to their infield unit. The 31-year-old appeared in 14 games for Chicago last season but logged just one hit in 18 at-bats. Porter Hodge (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Cubs' Nicky Lopez: Dealt to Cubs

The Rockies traded Lopez to the Cubs on Thursday in exchange for cash. Lopez has been at Triple-A Albuquerque all season and has taken advantage of the hitter-friendly environment of the Pacific Coast League to slash .333/.387/.519 with eight RBI and 11 runs scored through 62 plate appearances. He wasn't on Colorado's 40-man roster, so he won't take up a roster spot upon moving to Chicago, but he's an option to return to the majors as an infield depth piece at some point.

  • Rockies' Nicky Lopez: Misses out on Opening Day roster

The Rockies reassigned Lopez to minor-league camp Sunday. Lopez had been vying for a utility spot on the Rockies' Opening Day roster but won't break camp with the big club after posting a .695 OPS across 48 plate appearances in Cactus League play. Unless the Rockies grant him his release to pursue opportunities elsewhere, the 31-year-old infielder is expected to open the season at Triple-A Albuquerque.

  • Rockies' Nicky Lopez: Nets NRI deal with Rockies

The Rockies signed Lopez to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training Monday, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports. Lopez spent most of the 2025 season in the minors but did see action in 18 games between the Cubs and Angels, going just 1-for-24 at the plate. Most of Lopez's experience is at second base, and the Rockies have an opening at that position, but if the 30-year-old manages to crack the Opening Day roster, it will likely be in a reserve infielder role.

  • Cubs' Nicky Lopez: Returning to Cubs

Lopez agreed to a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Saturday, Tommy Birch of The Des Moines Register reports. Lopez will report to Triple-A Iowa for what will be his third stint of the season with the Cubs organization. The veteran infielder has appeared in 19 games in the majors with the Cubs and Angels in 2025 but has spent the majority of his time at the Triple-A level. Across stops with the Diamondbacks' and Yankees' Triple-A affiliates, Lopez has slashed .266/.316/.323 with zero home runs and five stolen bases over 41 games.

  • Nicky Lopez: Opts out of minor-league contract

The Diamondbacks released Lopez on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Lopez had the ability to trigger an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract on July 1, and he's done just that. The utility infielder slashed .267/.303/.317 in 24 games with Triple-A Reno and has gone 1-for-24 at the plate during stints this season between the Angels and Cubs.

  • Cubs' Nicky Lopez: Returns to Chicago on MLB deal

The Cubs signed Lopez to a one-year contract Wednesday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. Lopez was with the Cubs during spring training before opting out of his minor-league contract and eventually signing with the Angels. He's now back in Chicago and will initially fill a utility role in the infield, though he could get a decent amount of playing time at third base if the Cubs aren't satisfied with Jon Berti as their primary option at the position.

  • Nicky Lopez: Hits open market

Lopez cleared waivers and elected free agency Sunday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. The 30-year-old was designated for assignment by the Angels on Friday, and he won't remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Lopez appeared in just five games after inking an MLB deal with the Halos in late March and went 0-for-6 with a strikeout.

  • Angels' Nicky Lopez: DFA'd by Halos

The Angels designated Lopez for assignment Friday, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. Lopez signed a major-league contract with the Angels in late March, but he's appeared in just six games for the Halos while going 0-for-6 at the plate. If he goes unclaimed off waivers or isn't traded, Lopez will have the option of remaining in the organization in Triple-A or exploring other opportunities by entering free agency. Zach Neto (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.
