Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Taking seat against southpaw
Sweeney is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 10, Sweeney has been a fairly regular presence in the lineup, starting in eight of the previous 10 games while going 6-for-25 (.240 average) with one home run, six runs and four RBI. Sweeney could lose out on playing time once Parker Meadows' (quadriceps) return from the injured list likely pushes Javier Baez back to shortstop on a more frequent basis, but for now, the 25-year-old could continue to get steady playing time versus righties. The left-handed-hitting Sweeney will take a seat Wednesday against Astros southpaw Framber Valdez, however.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Homers, triples in big win
Sweeney went 2-for-4 with a triple, a three-run home run and an additional run scored in Monday's 10-0 win over the Astros.
Sweeney chipped in his second triple of the season, but his key swing came in the seventh inning, when he launched his sixth home run of the year with two runners on. It was the young shortstop's first long ball since July 6 and gives him something to build on, as he's currently seeing regular playing time with Javier Baez focusing on center field as Detroit deals with injuries to Matt Vierling (oblique) and Parker Meadows (quad).

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Scores three times in win
Sweeney went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored in Saturday's 8-5 win over the Twins.
Sweeney recorded his first multi-hit performance since May 12 and set a new season high in runs scored. It's been a bit of a struggle for the second-year shortstop, as he's batting just .206 overall with a .573 OPS. Sweeney spent some time with Triple-A Toledo until a recent call-up to the majors, but he's been getting regular work at shortstop while Javier Baez has been needed in center field.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Called up, starting Sunday
The Tigers recalled Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, and he'll start at shortstop and bat eighth in the team's series finale versus the Angels.
Sweeney will absorb the 26-man active roster spot of outfielder/infielder Matt Vierling (oblique), who was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Though he'll be included in the lineup Sunday, Sweeney is likely to see limited playing time during his latest stint in the big leagues. The 25-year-old has slashed just .208/.275/.303 with five home runs and three stolen bases over 258 plate appearances with the Tigers this season.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Sent back to Triple-A
The Tigers optioned Sweeney to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.
Sweeney will give up his spot to Kerry Carpenter (hamstring), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. After being called up from Toledo on July 2, Sweeney mainly served as a bench player for Detroit, appearing in 14 games while going 2-for-24 at the dish. He should play on an everyday basis at Triple-A.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Belts fifth home run
Sweeney went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk in Sunday's extra-inning win over Cleveland.
Sweeney came up clutch with a three-run blast in the 10th inning to lead Detroit to victory. It was his first long ball since May 12, and he's now 2-for-10 since returning from Triple-A Toledo. Sweeney has produced a lackluster .604 OPS with 27 RBI and 11 extra-base hits through 75 MLB games this season.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Returns to parent club
The Tigers recalled Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday.
Though Sweeney will start at shortstop and bat ninth in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader, he's expected to operate primarily in a reserve role during his upcoming stint with the big club. Sweeney opened the season as the Tigers' everyday shortstop but began to see his playing time dwindle in early June, when Javier Baez wasn't needed as often in the outfield and began seeing more opportunities at Sweeney's expense. Before being demoted to Triple-A last Friday, Sweeney slashed just .221/.280/.314 with four home runs and two stolen bases over 225 plate appearances on the season.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Heading back to big leagues
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday that Sweeney will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo, Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio reports.
He'll take the roster spot of Kerry Carpenter (hamstring), who is headed to the 10-day injured list. Sweeney was just sent down to Toledo over the weekend after putting up a .594 OPS in 225 plate appearances. The young shortstop will likely operate in a reserve role.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Heading to Triple-A
The Tigers optioned Sweeney to Triple-A Toledo following Friday's 4-1 loss to the Twins.
Sweeney will give up his spot on the 26-man active roster for outfielder/infielder Matt Vierling (shoulder), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. Sweeney has a .594 OPS with two steals, four home runs and 23 RBI in 225 plate appearances this season, and he had seen his playing time diminish since Parker Meadows and Wenceel Perez returned from the IL in early June, which resulted in Javier Baez shifting from the outfield to shortstop. Sweeney will get more regular playing time in Triple-A and could be recalled by the Tigers should they need to bolster their depth in the infield later on this season.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Losing hold of regular role
Sweeney is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.
Sweeney will sit against a right-handed starter (Cade Horton) for the second time in three games and appears to have shifted into a part-time role with Parker Meadows and Wenceel Perez off the IL, leaving fewer opportunities in the outfield for Javier Baez and Zach McKinstry. Baez will occupy shortstop and McKinstry will cover third base in Sunday's series finale.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: On bench again Friday
Sweeney is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.
It's the fourth absence in Detroit's past six games for Sweeney, who appears to have fallen out of a regular role with the Tigers getting the likes of Parker Meadows and Wenceel Perez back from the injured list over the past couple weeks. Zach McKinstry and Javier Baez have both received starts at shortstop over the last week, with Baez getting the nod Friday while McKinstry mans third base. Sweeney has been unable to get on track offensively this season with a .222/.279/.312 slash line through 60 games.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Starting Thursday
Sweeney is starting at shortstop and batting eighth in Thursday's game against the White Sox.
Sweeney has seen his playing time dwindle recently, as he only started one of Detroit's four previous games, but he'll get a chance to play in Thursday's afternoon tilt. The shortstop has been squeezed a bit by Zach McKinstry and Javier Baez. The latter started the year in center field but has since seen more time in the infield due to the return of Wenceel Perez and, more recently, Parker Meadows. As long as McKinstry and Baez stay productive at the plate, Sweeney may have to settle for a bench spot more often than not.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Playing time dwindling
Sweeney is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the White Sox.
The left-handed-hitting Sweeney has now started just one of the last four games for the Tigers. The White Sox are starting a lefty opener Wednesday in Jared Shuster, but Sweeney's absence could be more about the Tigers prioritizing playing time for Zach McKinstry -- who is at shortstop Wednesday -- and Javier Baez.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Sitting against righty
Sweeney is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the White Sox.
Sweeney will be on the bench for a second straight game, this time against a right-handed starter (Jonathan Cannon) after he was absent from the lineup Sunday while southpaw Kris Bubic took the hill for the Royals. With the recent returns of Wenceel Perez and Parker Meadows from the injured list, the Tigers have less of a need for Javier Baez in the outfield and could use him more frequently at shortstop. As a result, Sweeney could be at risk of falling into more of a timeshare at the position after having occupied the strong side of a platoon for much of the season.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Taking seat Sunday
Sweeney is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians.
After starting six straight games, Sweeney will hit the bench while southpaw Logan Allen toes the rubber for Cleveland. Zach McKinstry will get the nod at shortstop Sunday, but Javier Baez could end up settling in as the primary platoon mate for Sweeney once the veteran is no longer needed in the outfield.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Resting Saturday
Sweeney isn't part of the lineup for Saturday's game against Toronto.
Sweeney had been in the lineup for each of Detroit's last five matchups against left-handed starters, but he'll yield to Zach McKinstry at shortstop against southpaw Eric Lauer. The left-handed-hitting Sweeney is slashing .259/.323/.378 on the season.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Stays hot in May
Sweeney went 1-for-2 with an RBI single and a sac fly in Wednesday's 6-5 win over Boston.
Sweeney put the Tigers on the board in the second inning on an RBI single and tacked on another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. Sweeney has logged at least one RBI in each of his last three games, and since the beginning of May he has gone 19-for-47 (.404) with three home runs and 13 RBI.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Drives in three runs
Sweeney went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer in Monday's win against Boston.
Sweeney ripped a three-run shot during Detroit's nine-run third inning. He later singled in the fourth and eighth frames. Sweeney has been on a tear lately, producing five multi-hit games over his last seven appearances. That hot streak has boosted his season OPS from .600 to .735 with four home runs through 40 games.

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Back in lineup Monday
Sweeney is starting at shortstop and batting eighth in Monday's game against the Red Sox.
Sweeney got Sunday off after starting the previous 19 games, but he'll get right back in there Monday. The 25-year-old has been hot in May, slashing .400/.417/.600 with two home runs, seven RBI and nine runs scored in nine games this month, which has helped him prop up his overall numbers after a slow start to the season.
