  • Astros' Kai-Wei Teng: Takes loss in Sunday's start

Teng (1-3) was tagged with the loss in Sunday's game against the Reds, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out one batter across three innings. Teng has pitched well out of the bullpen this season but was thrust into a starting role for Sunday's game. He kept the Reds off the board through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth, yielding three runs on four hits without recording an out before being pulled. Unfortunately for Teng, he was unable to avoid the loss after his Astros teammates failed to score a run on three hits and a walk. Teng could make another start given the myriad of injuries to the Astros' rotation, and that could come next weekend at home against the Rangers.

  • Astros' Kai-Wei Teng: Tagged with loss Tuesday

Teng (1-2) took the loss Tuesday as the Astros fell 5-3 to the Orioles, giving up two runs on five hits over three innings. He struck out two. Kicking off a bullpen day for Houston, Teng lasted a season-high 42 pitches (30 strikes) before being lifted, with Ryan Weiss piggybacking him for another 3.2 frames. Teng has provided useful innings so far on a patchwork staff, posting a 2.75 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB over 19.2 innings in 12 appearances (one start), but his current role doesn't carry a lot of fantasy utility -- the 27-year-old right-hander has one win and one hold in that span. If the Teng/Weiss tandem takes another turn in the rotation, it lines up to come on the road this weekend in Boston. If the Astros look to Triple-A Sugar Land instead for a starter, Miguel Ullola would be on turn and threw 5.1 innings Tuesday, albeit with a 5:4 K:BB.

  • Astros' Kai-Wei Teng: Will be used as opener

Teng is slated to serve as an opening pitcher in Tuesday's game in Baltimore, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Teng has recorded more than three outs in seven of 11 relief outings this season, so he could cover more than one inning Tuesday. However, he's not stretched out enough to make a typical start, so Houston will be treating Tuesday's contest as a bullpen day. Ryan Weiss is a candidate to cover multiple innings in relief once Teng exits the game.

  • Astros' Kai-Wei Teng: Tapped for start Tuesday

Teng has been named the Astros' starting pitcher for Tuesday's game in Baltimore, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Tuesday had been Ryan Weiss' turn in the rotation, but Weiss appears headed back to the bullpen. Teng has pitched well as a multi-inning reliever this season, collecting a 2.16 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB across 16.2 frames. The right-hander made seven starts last season for the Giants and was deployed mostly as a starting pitcher in the minors, so he shouldn't require a lengthy period of time to get fully stretched out. However, with Tatsuya Imai (arm) poised to return from the injured list, Teng's stint in the rotation could be brief.

  • Astros' Kai-Wei Teng: Tagged with loss in relief

Teng (1-1) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Yankees after allowing one run on two hits in one-third of an inning. This was just the fourth run Teng has allowed this season, though it's worth noting that three of those have come via solo home runs. Despite being tagged with the loss and lasting just one-third of an inning Saturday, Teng has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign and sports a 2.16 ERA through 16.2 frames.

  • Astros' Kai-Wei Teng: Scoreless outing vs. A's

Teng threw 2.1 scoreless innings in Saturday's 11-0 win over the A's, allowing two hits while striking out three. Teng has gotten off to a nice start this season, allowing just one run on four hits and one walk over 5.2 innings in his first three appearances. Teng, who posted a 6.37 ERA across 29.2 innings in a swingman role with the Giants last season, earned a spot in Houston's Opening Day bullpen as Bennett Sousa (oblique), Enyel De Los Santos (knee), Nate Pearson (elbow) and Josh Hader (biceps) all opened the year on the IL.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Fans six in three-inning start

Teng allowed two runs on a hit and two walks while striking out six over three innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Saturday. Teng threw just 39 of 74 pitches for strikes but was able to limit the damage to a two-run home run by Max Muncy in the first inning. The Giants look to be limiting Teng's workload -- he's reached the five-inning mark in just two of his eight major-league appearances this season. He's at a 6.37 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 39:17 K:BB through 29.2 innings with the big club. Teng could get one more appearance this season, which is tentatively projected to be at home versus the Rockies in the final series of the year.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Records victory Monday

Teng (2-3) earned the win over Colorado on Monday, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out eight batters over 5.1 innings. Teng struggled with an 8.78 ERA over four starts in August prior to a brief minor-league demotion, but he looked like a different pitcher Monday. Not only did the right-hander limit the Rockies to two runs, he also fanned eight batters, doubling his previous season-best mark. Teng did allow traffic in all but one of his frames, but the Rockies didn't score on him until after he gave way for a reliever with one out in the sixth. Teng figures to get another turn in the rotation given this strong outing, and he lines up to face the Cardinals in St. Louis this weekend.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Going back to minors

The Giants optioned Teng to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. Teng has had an excellent season in the minors, but thus far that hasn't translated at the big-league level, as he's posted an 8.78 ERA and 12:9 K:BB over 13.1 frames covering three starts and one relief outing. He'll try to get back on track and earn another opportunity later this season.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Rough day vs. Padres

Teng (1-2) took the loss Wednesday against San Diego, allowing seven runs (six earned) on four hits and four walks over 1.2 innings. After tossing a scoreless first inning, Teng unraveled in the second, allowing six straight batters to reach after recording the first out. It's a disappointing showing from Teng, who held the Nationals scoreless over five innings in his previous appearance. With Landen Roupp (elbow) expected to rejoin the Giants' rotation Friday, Teng will likely head back to Triple-A or assume a bullpen role.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Starting Wednesday

Teng will draw the start in Wednesday's contest against the Padres, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Teng will return to the mound to make his second start of the season with San Francisco. The right-hander worked behind opener Matt Gage in Friday's win over the Nationals, tossing five scoreless innings while striking out four batters. Over two outings, Teng owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with eight punchouts over 8.1 innings, and he'll look to step up to the challenge against an impressive Padres group.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Works well behind opener

Teng (1-1) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out four over five shutout innings to earn the win over the Nationals on Friday. Teng took the hill in the second inning after a perfect frame from opener Matt Gage. It was a good overall effort from the Giants' pitching staff, with Teng standing out with an efficient 64 pitches (42 strikes) during his outing. He rebounded from allowing five runs over 3.1 innings versus the Mets in his season debut last Saturday. Teng is likely to get another turn through the rotation, as Landen Roupp (elbow) is nearing a rehab assignment, which may consist of only one start. Should Teng get another turn, he's tentatively projected to face the Padres at home, though it's unclear whether he'll start or work behind an opener.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Making first MLB start Saturday

Giants manager Bob Melvin said that Teng will start Saturday's game against the Mets at Citi Field, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Teng made four appearances out of the San Francisco bullpen in the opening month of the 2024 season, but he had pitched exclusively in the minors ever since then before the Giants called him up from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. The right-hander had been limited to 1.2 innings in his most recent outing with Sacramento on July 25, but that was largely because the Giants wanted to keep him fresh for a potential start with the big club last week that ended up falling to Carson Whisenhunt. The Giants still had another opening in the rotation with Landen Roupp (elbow) recently landing on the injured list, so Teng will be needed for at least one start. Over 25 appearances (four starts) with Sacramento on the season, the 26-year-old righty owns a 3.67 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 86:21 K:BB in 54 innings.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Sent to minors camp

The Giants reassigned Teng to minor-league camp Wednesday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Teng reached the big leagues for the first time in 2024 and made four ineffective relief appearances for the Giants before being non-tendered in November. The Giants re-signed him to a minor-league deal during the offseason, but since Teng is no longer a member of the 40-man roster, he'll likely face an uphill battle to resurface in the big leagues. Teng is expected to open the 2025 season at Triple-A Sacramento.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Re-signs with San Francisco

The Giants re-signed Teng to a minor-league contract Nov. 29. After being non-tendered last month, the right-hander has returned to the organization on a minor-league pact. Teng, 26, spent most of the 2024 season at Triple-A Sacramento, where he put up an 8.60 ERA and 1.81 WHIP over 75.1 innings.

  • Kai-Wei Teng: No contract from San Francisco

The Giants non-tendered Teng on Friday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Teng was designated for assignment by the Giants on Tuesday, and the 25-year-old will now enter free agency. Teng spent most of the 2024 campaign with Triple-A Sacramento, where he struggled to an 8.60 ERA and 1.81 WHIP over 75.1 innings. He did manage to make his major-league debut in late March, and across four big-league outings he gave up 12 earned runs over 11 innings.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Headed down to Triple-A

Teng was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The move corresponds with the Giants removing Sean Hjelle (elbow) from the 15-day IL. Teng has struggled in his first season in the majors, allowing 12 earned runs on 15 hits and eight walks over 11 innings. The right-hander will look to get his command back with Sacramento, where he posted a 4.22 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 79 innings in 2023.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Optioned to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Teng (oblique) to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Teng didn't make any Cactus League appearances due to a left oblique strain, but he seems to be just about fully healthy at this point, as he's scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game Wednesday, according to Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com. The 25-year-old right-hander should open the season as a member of Sacramento's rotation.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Battling oblique strain

The Giants announced Wednesday that Teng will miss at least the first 2-to-3 weeks of spring training with a left oblique strain, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Teng was added to the Giants' 40-man roster over the winter, but even if he wasn't sidelined for the start of camp with the oblique injury, he wouldn't have been a serious candidate for a spot in the big club's Opening Day rotation. Once he moves past the oblique strain, Teng will likely head to Triple-A Sacramento, with whom he tallied a 4.22 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 96:48 K:BB in 79 innings last season.

  • Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Receives 40-man spot

The Giants added Teng to their 40-man roster Tuesday. Teng split time between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento last season, putting up a 4.42 ERA and 1.36 WHIP through 126.1 combined innings. Teng needs to work on his command before he can be relied on in the majors. but his impressive strikeout numbers warrant protection from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft.
