Top Mick Abel News

  • Twins' Mick Abel: Beginning assignment Wednesday

Abel (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Wednesday will mark Abel's first time pitching in a game since he landed on the injured list in late April with elbow inflammation. He's scheduled to throw roughly 50 pitches or three innings during his first minor-league start and will most likely require multiple additional outings before the Twins activate him.

  • Twins' Mick Abel: Touches 97 mph in live BP

Abel (elbow) touched 97 mph in a 37-pitch live batting practice session Thursday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Abel said afterward that he felt "free and easy" in the session. The right-hander went on the 15-day injured list in late April with right elbow inflammation and then needed a cortisone injection after a setback with his triceps in early May. As long as Abel bounces back well Friday, he will throw either another live batting practice session next week or begin a rehab assignment. The 24-year-old looks to be tracking toward a return by late June.

  • Twins' Mick Abel: Set for live BP

Abel (elbow/triceps) is expected to throw live batting practice Thursday and could soon start up a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports.

Abel landed on the injured list in mid-April due to elbow inflammation and then received a cortisone injection for soreness in his triceps in early May. The 24-year-old is likely to require a handful of rehab starts in the minors to build his arm back up, so he should not be expected to be back with the Twins until late June at the earliest.

  • Twins' Mick Abel: Playing catch again

Abel (elbow/triceps) resumed playing light catch Wednesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Minnesota Star Tribune reports.

Initially placed on the 15-day injured list April 20 due to right elbow inflammation, Abel hit a snag in his recovery earlier this month, when he experienced soreness in his right triceps following a bullpen session. Abel appears to have responded well after receiving a cortisone injection to address the triceps issue, but he could be built up more slowly in his throwing program following the recent setback. The right-hander will gradually increase his throwing distance off flat ground before advancing to throwing off a mound and then facing hitters.

  • Twins' Mick Abel: Gets cortisone shot after setback

Abel (elbow) was given a cortisone injection after feeling soreness in his right triceps following a simulated game Saturday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Abel initially went on the injured list a little more than two weeks ago with right elbow inflammation, but this setback is focused more on the triceps area. He will be shut down for now before being reevaluated Tuesday. More should be known at that point regarding a potential timetable for Abel's return. With Abel delayed, Connor Prielipp will get some more looks in the Twins' rotation.

  • Twins' Mick Abel: Resumes playing catch

Twins manager Derek Shelton said Monday that Abel (elbow) has resumed playing catch and "all signs have been encouraging," Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.

Abel is eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list Saturday, and while he is not expected to be ready to go by that date, his absence will not extend much longer if he continues to progress at his current pace. The right-hander has missed the last couple weeks of action with right elbow inflammation. Abel's spot in the rotation is currently being filled by Connor Prielipp, who will start Monday's game versus the Mariners.

  • Twins' Mick Abel: Elbow injury not considered serious

The right elbow injury that landed Abel on the 15-day injured list Monday is not considered to be overly serious, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

The designation the Twins provided for Abel's elbow injury is inflammation, and it sounds like no additional testing will be required. There's a good chance Abel will still need more than a minimum stint on the IL, but a long-term absence appears unlikely at this juncture.

  • Twins' Mick Abel: Lands on IL with elbow inflammation

The Twins placed Abel on the 15-day injured list Monday with right elbow inflammation.

Abel is coming off the best start of his young career, having struck out a career-high 10 batters across seven shutout innings against the Red Sox. He had been slated for a two-start week but instead will be shelved for at least the next two weeks, and given the nature of the injury, probably longer. The Twins are expected to call up Kendry Rojas from Triple-A St. Paul, and Connor Prielipp will be part of the taxi squad in New York and could also be formally called up. One of those two lefties will likely slide into the rotation in Abel's place.
