  • Royals' Bailey Falter: Placed on IL

The Royals placed Falter on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a left bicep contusion. Falter surrendered four runs in two innings of relief Friday, and he'll hit the injured list a day later due to a bruised bicep on his throwing arm. The 28-year-old has an 11.25 ERA in 12 innings since being traded to the Royals near the deadline. Jonathan Bowlan was recalled from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move.

  • Royals' Bailey Falter: Roughed up out of bullpen

Falter (7-7) took the loss Friday against Detroit, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two over two innings. Falter was roughed up in relief Friday, giving up three runs without recording an out in the seventh inning and ultimately yielding four runs across two frames. Since joining Kansas City, the left-hander has labored, allowing nine earned runs over eight innings in two starts before being shifted to the bullpen. That move hasn't stabilized things either, as he's surrendered six earned runs in four innings of relief.

  • Royals' Bailey Falter: Moved to bullpen

Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Wednesday that Falter will move to the bullpen, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Michael Lorenzen (oblique) is ready to rejoin the rotation this weekend, and it's Falter who will shift to relief to accommodate Lorenzen's return. Falter has been pummeled for nine runs on 11 hits and five walks over eight innings in two starts since the Royals acquired him at the trade deadline. The lefty is likely to be used in a mop-up role.

  • Royals' Bailey Falter: Lasts four frames in no-decision

Falter did not factor into the decision in Monday's 7-4 victory over Washington. He allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in four innings with five strikeouts. The 28-year-old southpaw couldn't last the five innings required for a win in this 76-pitch outing. Falter conceded a two-run homer to Josh Bell in the opening frame, as he's now coughed up nine runs across eight innings with the Royals after arriving at the trade deadline. Through 121.1 total innings with Kansas City and Pittsburgh, Falter has pitched to a 4.15 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 77:44 K:BB while yielding 19 long balls. He is currently scheduled to make his next start at home against the White Sox this weekend.

  • Royals' Bailey Falter: Tagged early in Royals debut

Falter (7-6) took the loss against the Red Sox on Monday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts over four innings. Falter was mostly undone by a five-run first inning and managed just one scoreless frame in a lackluster debut with his new club. The southpaw generated only six whiffs on 88 pitches, though a Jarren Duran homer was the lone extra-base hit he allowed. He owns a 4.14 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 72:41 K:BB across 117.1 innings and is tentatively slated for a home matchup with the Nationals early next week.

  • Royals' Bailey Falter: Dealt to Kansas City

The Royals acquired Falter from the Pirates on Thursday in exchange for Evan Sisk and Callan Moss, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Mitch Keller was the more popular name in trade rumors among Pirates starting pitchers, but Falter is instead the first, and perhaps only, rotation piece to be on the move. The left-hander has been a quality back-end starter this season with a 3.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 70:39 K:BB across 113.1 innings.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Ties career high with eight Ks

Falter (7-5) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings in a 6-1 victory over the Tigers. He struck out eight without walking a batter. The southpaw delivered his first quality start since May 31 on an efficient 87 pitches (63 strikes) as he tied his career high in strikeouts. Falter has struggled since the beginning of June, and even after Wednesday's performance he carries a 4.89 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 28:13 K:BB over his last nine starts and 42.1 innings. He'll look to build on this effort in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week in San Francisco.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Struggles with power

Falter didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Kansas City, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Falter yielded multiple home runs for a second consecutive start, surrendering a solo homer to Salvador Perez and a two-run shot to Jac Caglianone. Falter hasn't completed six frames in seven straight outings, logging a 5.17 ERA and an 18:12 K:BB over 31.1 innings during that stretch. He'll take a 3.79 ERA into the All-Star break.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Mixed results in fourth loss

Falter (6-4) took the loss Friday against the Mariners, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits and no walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out four. After working just 1.2 innings in a rain-shortened appearance in his last start, Falter managed his longest outing Friday since his May 31 start. The four strikeouts matched the southpaw's most in his last eight appearances, and he avoided issuing a free pass for the first time since May 20. Falter will take a 3.69 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 56:32 K:BB across 92.2 frames on the road his next time out against the Royals, who are batting just .228 versus left-handed pitching since and including June 10.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Start cut short due to rain delay

Falter did not factor into Saturday's decision against the Mets, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out one batter over 1.2 innings. Falter did not return for the top of the second inning following an 89-minute rain delay, and he finished his start tossing 30 pitches (19 strikes). It's unclear whether Falter will be moved up in the rotation given the shortened outing, but if he remains on regular rest, he is slated to make his next start against the Mariners on the road next weekend.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Hit hard in no-decision

Falter didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-3 loss to the Tigers, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. Three of the five hits off the southpaw went for extra bases, including homers by Wenceel Perez and Javier Baez. Falter has avoided getting tagged with a loss since April 27, going 4-0 over his last nine trips to the mound while posting a stunning 1.99 ERA and 0.99 WHIP despite a lackluster 28:17 K:BB in 49.2 innings. He'll try to keep that streak going in his next start, which lines up to come at home this weekend against the Rangers.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Fantastic finish to May

Falter (4-3) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one over 6.1 shutout innings to earn the win Saturday over the Padres. Falter went 3-0 with just four runs allowed (three earned) over 35.2 innings across his six starts in May. The one downside was his 19:13 K:BB, though Falter has never been one to rack up strikeouts. On the year, he's at a 3.14 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 41:22 K:BB through 66 innings over 12 starts. He is tentatively projected to next take the mound at home against his former team, the Phillies, next weekend.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Falls short of quality start

Falter did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks over 5.2 innings in a 6-5 loss against the Brewers. He struck out one. Falter surrendered three runs during the opening frame but settled down from there, though he fell an out short of his sixth quality start of the year since he was pulled after giving up a two-out single in the sixth inning. The left-hander's single punchout was a season low, but he's still given up just three earned runs across his past five starts. That strong stretch leaves him with a 3.47 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 40:21 K:BB through 59.2 innings this year. Falter is tentatively scheduled for a tough road matchup with the Padres next weekend.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Tosses six scoreless frames in win

Falter (2-3) earned the win against Atlanta on Friday, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three over six scoreless innings. After yielding three baserunners in the first two innings, Falter proceeded to face the minimum in three of the next four en route to his second scoreless outing of the year. He hasn't generated a ton of whiffs or strikeouts this season, but the 28-year-old southpaw has allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of eight starts and has a 4.36 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 43.1 innings this season. Falter's next start is tentatively slated for next week on the road against the Mets.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: No-decision in quality start

Falter did not factor into the decision of Saturday's game against the Padres, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out six over seven innings. Falter scatted four baserunners over seven strong innings, with his only blemish coming on a Manny Machado solo homer in the seventh frame. It was Falter's third quality start of the season and the second time he has made it through seven innings. He has a 5.06 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB across 37.1 innings, and his next start is slated for next weekend at home against Atlanta.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Stumbles in loss

Falter (1-3) yielded seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks over 4.1 innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Dodgers. Falter struggled right out of the gate Sunday, coughing up four runs in the first inning and another in the second. He settled in for a bit until the Dodgers plated three more runs in the fifth frame, with two being charged to the left-hander. It's the second time that Falter has allowed seven runs in a start this season and his ERA jumped to 5.93 through 30.1 innings. He's projected for a home matchup with the Padres next weekend.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Ready for next start

Falter (back) is listed as the Pirates' scheduled starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The 28-year-old lefty departed after four innings in his latest start Tuesday due to back tightness, but he's apparently bounced back and will be ready to take the hill Sunday on normal rest. While Falter has delivered a strong 1.19 WHIP through his first five starts of the season, most his other ratios (5.19 ERA, 12.5 K-BB%) have painted an unflattering picture of his performance. He won't be a recommended streaming option as he takes on a stellar Dodgers offense on the road.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Tosses seven shutout innings

Falter (1-2) earned the win against the Nationals on Wednesday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out two across seven scoreless innings. Falter needed just 83 pitches (of which 57 were strikes) to get through seven scoreless frames, allowing only three baserunners in the process. It was his second quality start in four tries and a nice bounce-back effort for the 26-year-old southpaw, who yielded 12 runs (10 earned) in his two previous outings. Falter will look to make it two wins in a row in his next start, which is tentatively slated for next week on the road against the Angels.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: Struggles with command in loss

Falter (0-2) was hit with the loss against the Reds on Friday after giving up five runs (three earned) on three hits and five walks while striking out four batters across five innings. Falter ran into trouble early on, allowing the first three batters he faced to reach on walks. A double play kept hope alive that he'd be able to get through the first inning with minimal damage, though those hopes quickly evaporated when Jeimer Candelario smacked a ball 384 feet into the left-field bleachers. Two more walks and a wild pitch allowed Cincinnati to score two more runs in the third frame and would keep the Reds in front for the rest of the game. Falter now owns a 7.20 ERA through 15 innings across his first three starts, and he's lined up to make his next start at home against the Nationals.

  • Pirates' Bailey Falter: No longer pitching Thursday

Falter did not recover well from his catch session Wednesday and is no longer scheduled to pitch in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Pirates senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said the move to scratch Falter was made out of an "abundance of precaution," adding that Falter is dealing with "general body soreness" and will instead play catch again Thursday before the team determines the next steps. Falter is expected to have a spot in the Pittsburgh rotation to begin the season, but this issue could throw a wrench into those plans if it delays the lefty longer than expected, with Opening Day just two weeks away.
