Braves' Aaron Bummer: Moves on 60-day IL
Atlanta transferred Bummer (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Left shoulder inflammation sent Bummer to the injured list in late August, and although he began a throwing program Saturday, his move to the 60-day IL will officially rule him out for the rest of the season. He'll give up his place on the 40-man roster to Brett Wisely, who was claimed off waivers from San Francisco in a corresponding move.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Starts up throwing program
Atlanta announced Saturday that Bummer (shoulder) has resumed a throwing program, but the left-hander hasn't yet been cleared for bullpen sessions, MLB.com reports.
Bummer has been on the injured list since Aug. 24 due to left shoulder inflammation, and while he hasn't been shut down for the season, he's running out of time to complete his throwing program and rejoin the Atlanta bullpen. Prior to being shut down, Bummer recorded three wins and two holds while submitting a 3.81, 1.25 WHIP and 51:17 K:BB in 54.1 innings over 42 appearances for Atlanta.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Lands on injured list
Atlanta placed Bummer on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to left shoulder inflammation.
The left-hander threw 1.1 scoreless innings Saturday against the Mets, which is presumably when he suffered the injury since that was his first appearance in nearly a week. Bummer will be eligible to be reinstated Sept. 8, though it's unclear if he's expected to be healthy by that point.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Struggles as opener Saturday
Bummer allowed three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out one batter over two innings in a no-decision as an opener against St. Louis on Saturday.
Bummer was tabbed to open the bullpen game for Atlanta and gave the team two innings. While he was able to keep the ball in the strike zone, throwing 21 of 33 pitches for strikes and issuing zero free passes, he was tagged for three runs in the second frame, with two of the runs coming on a Nolan Gorman homer. It's not yet clear how Atlanta plans to fill the rotation spot that opened when Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) landed on the injured list in early July, so Bummer could be called upon to fill the same role after the All-Star break, though the team figures to eventually settle upon a traditional starter.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Opening Saturday's contest
Bummer will serve as Atlanta's opening pitcher in a bullpen game Saturday against the Cardinals.
For the second Saturday in a row, Bummer will fill an opener role in a bullpen game while Atlanta has yet to settle on a permanent replacement in the rotation for Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), who is likely to be sidelined until around September. In his previous turn as an opener last weekend against the Orioles, Bummer covered 2.1 innings, and Atlanta could be looking for him to handle a similar workload Saturday. Atlanta doesn't have an obvious candidate to serve as a bulk reliever behind Bummer, though Jesse Chavez and the newly claimed Joey Wentz are available on three days' rest and should be capable of covering multiple frames, if needed.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Starting bullpen game Saturday
Bummer will serve as the opening pitcher in a bullpen game for Atlanta in Saturday's matchup with the Orioles, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Atlanta has an opening in its rotation after Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) landing on the injured list earlier this week, but the team won't immediately turn to a traditional starter to replace him. Instead, manager Brian Snitker plans to lean on a group of relievers to get the team through Saturday's contest, with Bummer leading off the proceedings in what will be his first MLB start and his first in the professional ranks since 2017. Bummer made 2.2- and 2.1-inning appearances in his last two relief outings, so he could be capable of working once through the Baltimore lineup before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Returns from bereavement list

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Takes loss in relief
Bummer (0-1) took the loss against the Padres on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two across two-thirds of an inning.
Bummer was called into action for the seventh inning after Spencer Schwellenbach tossed six scoreless frames. Bummer came out firing with two straight strikeouts, but he was lifted after giving up a ground-rule double to Jake Cronenworth and intentionally walking Xander Bogaerts, with Cronenworth coming around to score after Bummer's exit. The left-hander has given up a run in each of his first two outings of the 2025 season, but he'll likely remain in the high-leverage mix in Atlanta for now.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Clean spring so far
Bummer has a 0.00 ERA and 4:1 K:BB through five Grapefruit League innings.
The southpaw will be part of Atlanta's setup crew this season, along with right-hander Pierce Johnson and fellow lefty Dylan Lee. Bummer recorded a career-high 27 holds back in 2019 with the White Sox, and he could approach that number in 2025 given his impressive stuff -- he generated a 43.9 percent whiff rate with his sweeper last season, and no pitcher in baseball had a lower barrel rate allowed than his 1.3 percent.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Set for key setup role
Bummer is expected to become Atlanta's top left-handed setup man in front of closer Raisel Iglesias following the offseason departure of A.J. Minter (hip), David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
After recording 46 holds over his last three years with the White Sox, Bummer was dealt to Atlanta in November 2023 but had a bumpy 2024 debut with his new team, managing only two holds in 56 regular-season appearances with a 3.58 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 69:18 K:BB over 55.1 innings. The 31-year-old was the victim of some extraordinary bad luck however, as highlighted by his 2.22 FIP -- Bummer's barrel rate was in the 100th percentile and his groundball rate in the 98th percentile, but the squibs and flares he gave up kept finding holes. Dylan Lee could also see plenty of high-leverage work against southpaw hitters, but Bummer will get first crack at being the eighth-inning bridge to Iglesias, along with right-hander Pierce Johnson.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Gets new deal from Atlanta
Bummer signed a two-year, $13 million contract with Atlanta on Saturday.
Bummer's original deal included two club options over the next two years, worth $7.25 million and $7.5 million, respectively. However, his latest contract will void those two option years while saving the team a bit of cash, as the left-hander is now due to make $3.5 million in 2025. The 31-year-old finished with a 3.58 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 55.1 innings during his first season in Atlanta.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Club option will be exercised
Atlanta president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos said Friday that the team plans to pick up Bummer's $7.25 million club option for 2025, Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Game Atlanta reports.
The 31-year-old lefty held a 3.58 ERA and 69:18 K:BB over 55.1 innings in 2024 in his first season with Atlanta. Bummer could have an even more important role in 2025 with A.J. Minter heading into free agency and recovering from hip surgery.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Collects third win
Bummer (3-2) picked up the win Friday over the Marlins, allowing one hit and striking out two in a scoreless eighth inning.
Entering the game with Atlanta down 3-2, the southpaw gave up a leadoff single to Xavier Edwards and watched the shortstop steal second base, but Bummer then proceeded to shut down what passes for the heart of the Miami order, including a strikeout of cleanup hitter Jonah Bride. Bummer has a 1.74 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB through 10.1 innings since the beginning of July, but Atlanta's deep bullpen keeps him out of consistent fantasy-friendly usage -- he has zero saves or holds on the season.

Braves' Aaron Bummer: Not seeing high-leverage work
Bummer has posted a 3.62 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB through 32.1 innings with two wins, zero saves and zero holds through 33 appearances.
Acquired from the White Sox in the offseason to bolster Atlanta's relief corps, Bummer hasn't been able to claim a high-leverage role in a much deeper bullpen than he was part of in Chicago. The southpaw has been effective at keeping the ball in the park, serving up only one homer despite a 54.9 percent groundball rate that's his lowest mark since he was a rookie in 2017. Barring a rash of injuries ahead of him in the pecking order, Bummer will likely continue working in middle relief in the second half, limiting his fantasy value even in formats that use holds as well as saves.
