  • Angels' Sebastian Rivero: Moves into No. 2 role

Rivero is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies. After starting five times in six games from last Friday through Thursday, Rivero has moved into the backup role at catcher with Logan O'Hoppe recently making his return from the 7-day injured list. Expect Rivero to see light playing time over the final week of the season.

  • Angels' Sebastian Rivero: Notches steal in loss

Rivero went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Brewers. This was the first career steal for Rivero. The catcher is batting .192 with two RBI, four runs scored, two doubles and no home runs over nine games in the majors with the Angels this year, his first taste of big-league action since 2022 with the Royals. He'll compete with Logan O'Hoppe for playing time over the last three series of the season.

  • Angels' Sebastian Rivero: Riding pine Thursday

Rivero isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game versus Seattle, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. • Angels' Sebastian Rivero: Receiving third straight start

Rivero will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Twins, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. Though Travis d'Arnaud has been on the Angels' roster all season as the No. 2 catcher behind Logan O'Hoppe (concussion), Rivero will pick up his third straight start behind the plate Wednesday following his call-up from Triple-A Salt Lake after O'Hoppe was placed on the 7-day injured list. Through his first two contests with the Angels, Rivero has gone 2-for-8 with a double, a walk, two RBI and two runs.

The Angels signed Rivero to a minor-league contract Monday, broadcaster Chris Harris reports. Rivero, 26, slashed only .186/.239/.249 in 75 contests between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett in the Atlanta organization in 2024. He saw some brief action at the major-league level with the Royals from 2021 to 2022.

  • Royals' Sebastian Rivero: Heads back to minors

The Royals optioned Rivero to Double-A Northwest Arkansas following Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Blue Jays. Kansas City needed to open up space on the 26-man active roster with 10 players set to return from the restricted list in advance of the team's first game out of the All-Star break next weekend, so Rivero was a logical candidate to return to the minors. After his call-up Thursday when a wave of players were deactivated for the series in Toronto due to their vaccination statuses, Rivero started twice and appeared off the bench in the other two contests of the four-game slate, going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.

Rivero was recalled from Double-A Northwest Arkansas after Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox. The 23-year-old was demoted Friday but will quickly rejoin the Royals since Salvador Perez landed on the injured list with a sprained left thumb. • Royals' Sebastian Rivero: Rejoins big club

The Royals recalled Rivero from Triple-A Omaha on Monday. Rivero was optioned back to Omaha after serving as the 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader, but he'll be back one day later in advance of the Royals' series finale with the Orioles after Edward Olivares (quadriceps) was moved to the 10-day injured list. The addition of Rivero will give the Royals an extra body behind the plate while No. 2 catcher MJ Melendez likely picks up more work as a designated hitter with Olivares out of the mix for at least the next week and a half.

  • Royals' Sebastian Rivero: Returns to minors

Rivero was returned to the minors following Sunday's doubleheader against the Orioles. • Royals' Sebastian Rivero: Called up for doubleheader

The Royals called up Rivero from Double-A Northwest Arkansas ahead of Sunday's doubleheader with the Orioles. Kansas City appointed Rivero as the 27th man for the twin bill, so he'll presumably be headed back to the minors once the doubleheader concludes. • Royals' Sebastian Rivero: Recalled by Royals

Rivero was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Friday. Rivero was sent down early last week, but he didn't appear in any minor-league games following his demotion. He hasn't played in an official minor-league contest since the 2019 season, spending the majority of his time at High-A where he hit .212 with one homer, 24 RBI and two stolen bags over 91 games.
