May (elbow) will throw his second live bullpen session Friday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
May threw a live bullpen session Tuesday and will follow that up with a second session Friday. He won't return during the regular season, but he is hoping to be healthy enough to be available for the postseason.

Red Sox's Dustin May: Throws bullpen session
May (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
May landed on the 15-day injured list last week with right elbow neuritis. While May appears to be trending in the right direction, Red Sox manager Alex Cora conceded that the righty has "maybe" run out of time to contribute down the stretch. Even if May is deemed healthy enough to return this month, his role is very much in flux, as he's posted a 5.40 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 26:13 K:BB over 28.1 innings with Boston.

Red Sox's Dustin May: Officially placed on IL
The Red Sox placed May on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right elbow neuritis.
The Red Sox haven't officially ruled out May for the remainder of the regular season, though the timing of his injury would likely allow him to make just one more start in September if he returns after a minimum-length stay. Connelly Early was promoted from Triple-A Worcester to fill the void in Boston's rotation and will make his MLB debut Tuesday against the Athletics.

Red Sox's Dustin May: Heading to 15-day injured list
The Red Sox will place May on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to an undisclosed injury, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
May had been scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Athletics, but the Red Sox will now call up Connelly Early from Triple-A Worcester to take the hill instead. Though the nature of May's injury isn't known, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com relays that it's not considered serious, so the right-hander could have a shot to return later this month. May has been inconsistent during his time in Boston, posting a 5.40 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 26:13 K:BB over 28.1 innings.

Red Sox's Dustin May: Back in starting role Tuesday
May is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Athletics in Sacramento.
Just as manager Alex Cora suggested would be the case, May is set to return to a starting role this week after the right-hander was deployed on three days' rest as a reliever in his most recent outing this past Wednesday against the Guardians. While working behind opener Brennan Bernardino, May limited Cleveland to one earned run on three hits and two walks. Since being acquired from the Dodgers on July 31, May owns a 5.40 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 26:13 K:BB over 28.1 innings through his first six outings with the Red Sox.

Red Sox's Dustin May: Set for limited bulk-relief outing
May will work in relief behind opening pitcher Brennan Bernardino for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, though manager Alex Cora said that the right-handed May will be available for up to 40 pitches, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Since May will be pitching on three days' rest after most recently starting in last Saturday's 10-3 loss to the Pirates, he'll face a tighter restriction than if he were operating as bulk reliever on normal rest. Cora noted that the Red Sox aren't yet preparing for May to move to the bullpen on a permanent basis, as the 27-year-old is still likely to make a start during next week's series versus the Athletics. Since being acquired from the Dodgers at the trade deadline, May has produced a 5.68 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB in 25.1 innings through his first five outings with the Red Sox.

Red Sox's Dustin May: Won't start this week
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that May will be available out of the bullpen this week, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
The Red Sox want to keep the rest of their starting pitchers on turn following Thursday's off day, so May will be available to pitch in relief, if needed. He will rejoin the rotation next week, likely during the series against the Athletics. May has been hit or miss during his five starts with Boston, posting a 5.68 ERA and 25:11 K:BB over 25.1 innings.

Red Sox's Dustin May: Fades late in Saturday's loss
May (7-11) took the loss Saturday, coughing up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and four walks over 5.1 innings as the Red Sox fell 10-3 to the Pirates. He struck out five.
Boston held an early 2-1 lead as May gave up only an unearned run through four innings, but the wheels began to come off for the right-hander in the fifth after a leadoff single by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. May has been tagged for at least four runs in four of his last eight starts, stumbling to a 6.13 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 38:18 K:BB over 39.2 innings during that stretch. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in Arizona.
