  • Athletics' Scott McGough: Up from Vegas

The Athletics recalled McGough from Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday. With Sean Newcomb (elbow) headed for the injured list, the A's will turn to McGough to provide the big club with depth in their bullpen. The 35-year-old has surrendered 10 earned runs in just 12 MLB innings this season but owns a 3.18 ERA through 39.2 frames in the minors. He'll likely be limited to low-leverage work.

  • Athletics' Scott McGough: Dispatched to Las Vegas

The Athletics optioned McGough to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. McGough's brief time with the Athletics didn't go well, as he was touched up for five runs on eight hits and one walk over five innings covering three relief appearances. He's being replaced on the active roster by Mitch Spence, who was recalled from Triple-A.

  • Athletics' Scott McGough: Added to roster

The Athletics selected McGough's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday. McGough inked a minor-league contract with the Athletics back in June after being cut loose by the Diamondbacks. He's posted a 3.58 ERA and 37:12 K:BB over 37.2 innings at the Triple-A level in 2025 but has yielded five runs with a 5:6 K:BB in seven frames in the big leagues this season.

  • Athletics' Scott McGough: Joins Athletics

McGough signed a minor-league deal with the Athletics on Saturday. McGough was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on June 5 and opted for free agency five days later. He has now found a new opportunity, though it's unclear if he'll see time in the Athletics bullpen at any point later on this season. He's allowed 32 earned runs and owns a 30:27 K:BB across his last 39.2 frames in the big leagues between the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

  • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Removed from 40-man roster

The Diamondbacks designated McGough for assignment Thursday. He will cede his spot on the 40-man roster to left-hander Andrew Saalfrank, who was reinstated after serving a one-year suspension. McGough is likely to go unclaimed off waivers after he submitted a 6.43 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 6:5 K:BB in seven innings over his seven relief appearances with Arizona before he was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday.

  • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Heading back to Triple-A

The Diamondbacks optioned McGough to Triple-A Reno on Sunday. McGough will give up his spot in the bullpen to righty Cristian Mena, who was recalled from Reno in a corresponding move. • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Headed to majors

The Diamondbacks selected McGough's contract from Triple-A Reno on Sunday. McGough signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks in February after Arizona declined his $4 million team option for 2025 in November. He's appeared in eight games at Triple-A, posting a 4.82 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB across 9.1 innings. The move corresponds with Yilber Diaz being optioned to Reno and J.P. Feyereisen being designated for assignment.

  • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Banished to MiLB camp

The Diamondbacks reassigned McGough to minor-league camp Wednesday. Arizona declined McGough's $4 million team option for 2025 in November before bringing him back on a minor-league deal in February and allowing him to compete for an Opening Day roster spot. After turning in a 7.44 ERA over 26 appearances with the big club in 2024, McGough didn't do much this spring to demonstrate that his performance turned a corner, as he was lit up for six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. The 35-year-old righty will likely open the season in the bullpen at Triple-A Reno.

  • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Back with Snakes

McGough signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training. The Diamondbacks declined their half of McGough's $4 million mutual option earlier in the offseason, but they will ultimately retain the righty's services on a minor-league deal. The 35-year-old reliever struggled mightily in the big leagues last season, posting a 7.44 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across 32.2 innings. Barring a drastic turnaround in spring training, he'll likely fill in as bullpen depth for Triple-A Reno.

  • Scott McGough: Hits open market

The Diamondbacks declined McGough's $4 million mutual option on Saturday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. He receives a $750K buyout in the transaction. McGough logged a 5.59 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 111 strikeouts over 103 innings in two seasons with Arizona. He was much more effective in 2023 than in 2024, as his K-BB% dropped from 18.6 percent to 2.7 percent and he moved back and forth between Triple-A and the majors this past season after spending all of 2023 in the big leagues.

The 34-year-old reliever has a 6.83 ERA and 1.62 WHIP across 29 major-league innings this season, but those numbers are down to a 3.22 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 36.1 frames in Triple-A. McGough will bolster the Diamondbacks' bullpen for the upcoming road series against the Rockies.

He'll now return to the big leagues to give the Diamondbacks a fresh bullpen arm, replacing Slade Cecconi.

  • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Sent to Reno

The Diamondbacks optioned McGough to Triple-A Reno on Friday. Since being called up to Arizona on June 8, McGough has posted an 8.18 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 11 innings while striking out 10 batters and walking eight. He'll now head back to Triple-A following his poor performance, and Humberto Castellanos will rejoin the D-backs' bullpen as McGough's replacement.

McGough recorded two outs as Sunday's opener against the Padres, allowing one run on one hit and no walks while striking out a batter. McGough allowed a solo home run to Fernando Tatis and was unable to complete the first frame after he was replaced by Tommy Henry to face Jake Cronenworth for the final out of the inning. McGough has struggled to a 6.62 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 12:10 K:BB over 17.2 innings thus far. It's unclear if the team has plans to keep him around for the time being or send him back to Triple-A Reno.

  • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Enters for injured starter

McGough allowed three runs on two hits and two walks over one inning in Friday's 6-1 loss to the Mariners. McGough entered the game on short notice in the sixth inning, inheriting one runner after starter Zac Gallen was removed with a hamstring injury. The reliever allowed a single, walk then a grand slam to Mitch Haniger, the second consecutive appearance in which McGough has ceded a home run. It was the fourth time in the last six outings he's allowed earned runs, and his ERA spiked to 7.30 following Friday's effort.

  • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Projected for bullpen

McGough is projected for one of eight bullpen spots on Arizona's Opening Day roster, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. McGough was an important piece of the bullpen to start the 2023 season and was a regular at the end of games, but it all fell apart in the second half, when he posted an 8.63 ERA over 23 appearances. Once Paul Sewald was acquired at the trade deadline, McGough didn't sniff a ninth-inning save opportunity. After a scoreless inning Saturday, McGough has given up two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two over two Cactus League appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Starting nightcap

McGough will start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against San Diego, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Saturday will mark the first start of McGough's major-league career. He's put up a 4.76 ERA and 1.25 WHIP alongside a 69:24 K:BB through 56.2 innings on the season and will likely remain in the game for an inning or two before handing it off to the bullpen.

  • Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Converts ninth save

McGough struck out two without putting a runner on base to earn the save in Monday's 4-3 win over the Giants in 11 innings. McGough uncorked a wild pitch that moved the initial runner to third base, but that was his only mistake. The save was his ninth of the year and his second in a row, but McGough's chances to close are likely to dry up following Arizona's trade for Paul Sewald. McGough has a 4.30 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 65:20 K:BB with 13 holds and four blown saves over 52.1 innings -- he should be able to maintain a setup role, and his strikeout upside could keep him on the fantasy radar in NL-only formats.
