Red Sox's Alex Bregman: Ready for Game 1 despite illness

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Monday that Bregman should be fine to play in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series on Tuesday versus the Yankees despite missing the final two games of the regular season due to illness, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Bregman was kept away from the club for most of the past two days and traveled separately from the team to New York, but he worked out on the field at Yankee Stadium on Monday and will be ready to roll for Game 1. The 31-year-old stumbled a bit to the finish line in slashing just .216/.310/.330 in September, but his full-season OPS of .821 was his highest mark since 2019.

Bregman will rest up for the second day in a row while the Red Sox prepare for a wild-card matchup against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Nick Sogard will draw the start at third base in place of Bregman, who looks set to finish his 10th regular season in the majors with a .273/.360/.462 slash line, 18 home runs, one stolen base, 64 runs and 62 RBI in 114 games.

Bregman isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Detroit, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
After clinching a postseason berth Friday, the Red Sox will give Bregman a chance to rest Saturday while Nate Eaton mans the hot corner.
Bregman went 1-for-3 with two walks and a solo home run in Friday's 11-7 win over the Rays.
Bregman homered for the second time this week, but he's struggled at the plate over the last several weeks. He has a .597 OPS with two homers and 10 RBI over the last 33 games.
Bregman went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Yankees.
Bregman put the Red Sox on the board with his fifth-inning homer, reducing the deficit to 4-1. The blast was his first one since Aug. 12, ending a drought of 27 games. During that span, Bregman slashed .214/.305/.262 with seven RBI.

Bregman went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Friday's 10-5 loss to the Diamondbacks.
Bregman's two-run double was part of a four-run eighth inning that pulled the Red Sox within a run before Arizona ran away in the bottom of the frame. He's slumped since his last multi-hit game on Aug. 22; Bregman entered the night batting .104 (5-for-48) with two RBI over the previous 12 games.
Bregman went 3-for-5 with a double and a walk in Thursday's 6-3 win over the Yankees.
Bregman wasn't directly involved in any run production, but he still had a strong game from the No. 2 spot in the order. The third baseman went 0-for-7 with three walks over this week's two-game series versus the Orioles but bounced back Thursday. Bregman has hit well overall, batting .303 with a .926 OPS, 16 home runs, 24 doubles, 52 RBI, 49 runs scored and a stolen base through 82 contests this season.
Bregman is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins.
Bregman will check out of the starting nine for the first time since July 30 in what appears to be a routine day off. Abraham Toro will cover third base in Bregman's stead Sunday.
