The Diamondbacks placed DeSclafani on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to right thumb inflammation, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Arizona recalled right-hander Casey Kelly from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move, and if he's not needed in relief over the next four days, he could end up taking DeSclafani's spot in the rotation the next time it comes up Sunday in Colorado. DeSclafani initially worked in relief after joining the Diamondbacks in mid-June, but he had started in his last three appearances and logged a 5.99 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 7:5 K:BB in 9.2 innings during that stretch.

DeSclafani attempted to pitch through the soreness but was yanked after three innings and 52 pitches. The right-hander said following the game that he wasn't sure if a stint on the injured list would be needed. The Diamondbacks are expected to evaluate DeSclafani on Wednesday.

DeSclafani jumped into the Diamondbacks' rotation at the beginning of August and struggled in his subsequent start, giving up four runs over 2.1 frames. He was much better Wednesday, limiting the Padres to three hits and no runs. DeSclafani threw 71 pitches (50 strikes) in the appearance, so he doesn't appear to be ready to handle a full starter's workload quite yet. Nonetheless, the right-hander may have earned himself the opportunity to continue being a part of Arizona's rotation. If that's the case, his next start is lined up to come against Texas on the road.

After working out of the bullpen in each of his previous three appearances, DeSclafani joined the Arizona rotation this past weekend as a replacement for Merrill Kelly, who was shipped to the Rangers ahead of the trade deadline. While making his first start for Arizona since July 6 on Friday in Sacramento, DeSclafani was dealt a loss while giving up four earned runs on five hits and three walks over 2.1 innings against the Athletics. Despite the rough showing, DeSclafani will get at least one more chance to solidify his spot in the Arizona rotation. Another poor outing, however, could prompt the Diamondbacks to go in a different direction with their No. 5 starter.

DeSclafani missed all of last season due to flexor tendon repair surgery on his right elbow. More than 13 months after his procedure, it's unclear where he is in his rehab process, but the Yankees evidently feel good about his current status and will send him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to continue building up.
