Brewers' Jose Quintana: Coughs up three in NLCS finale

Quintana took the loss Friday against the Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLCS after allowing three earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out one batter in two-plus innings.
Quintana was hardly able to get comfortable on the mound before Shohei Ohtani blasted a 446-foot home run against him to begin the first inning. Mookie Betts and Will Smith followed with a couple of singles and were brought home on a Tommy Edman single and Teoscar Hernandez groundout. Los Angeles wasn't able to score any more runs off Quintana, but consistent pressure forced the left-hander out of the game after just 49 pitches. With Milwaukee's season now over, the 36-year-old will turn his attention to free agency. He figures to receive interest on the open market after posting a 3.96 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 131.2 innings in the regular season.

The veteran lefty became the obvious choice to take the ball in Game 4 after the Brewers opted to go with Aaron Ashby as the opener and Jacob Misiorowski as the bulk reliever in Game 3. Quintana has made one appearance so far this postseason, tossing three scoreless innings in NLDS Game 3 versus the Cubs. He'll be tasked Friday with helping the Brewers stave off elimination.

Quintana (calf) has been included on the Brewers' roster for the NLDS against the Cubs, but manager Pat Murphy declined to say whether the left-hander would start Monday's Game 2, Jack Stern of BrewerFanatic.com reports.
Quintana had been shelved since mid-September with a left calf strain, but he appears to be fully healthy now heading into the NLDS. Because of three off days, the Brewers will need only three starting pitchers for the NLDS, and Quintana looks to be in consideration for one of those spots. Freddy Peralta will take the hill for Game 1 on Saturday, leaving Quintana and Quinn Priester as the options to start Game 2.

Quintana was able to play catch with no apparent issues Tuesday, which seemed set him up to make his next turn through the rotation this weekend in St. Louis. The veteran left-hander was scheduled to do some running Wednesday which presumably didn't go well, and he will end up missing the rest of the regular season. Quintana will be eligible to be reinstated Sept. 30, so he could be back on the active roster for the start of the playoffs with a minimum-length stay on the shelf.

Quintana owns a steady 3.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 83:46 K:BB over 121 innings, and his next appearance lines up for a road tilt against the Rangers.

It was a tough outing for the veteran left-hander, whose four walks matched a season high. Overall, his ERA sits at 3.96 through 21 starts (114.2 innings) this season with a 1.29 WHIP and 77:43 K:BB. Quintana will look to bounce back his next time out, which is currently slated for next week at home against the Phillies.
