  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Taking seat Friday

Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Red Sox. Goldschmidt started three of the previous four contests and has an .823 OPS through 15 games in August, but he'll head to the bench for Friday's matchup with Boston. Ben Rice will handle first base while Austin Wells starts at catcher versus Red Sox righty Brayan Bello.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Good to go Sunday

Goldschmidt (knee) will start at first base and bat sixth Sunday against the Cardinals. Goldschmidt has been battling a knee sprain, but he'll return to the lineup for the first time since Tuesday. The veteran first baseman has a .716 OPS through 11 games in August, though he's gone just 3-for-24 outside of a three-hit performance Aug. 4 in Miami.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Still out Saturday

Goldschmidt (knee) isn't in the starting lineup against St. Louis on Saturday, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for the third straight game as he deals with a low-grade strain in his right knee. That said, he was able to appear as a defensive replacement at first base late Friday (though he didn't make a plate appearance), so he could be available off the bench again Saturday. Ben Rice is starting at first base in Goldschmidt's stead.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Sitting Friday

Goldschmidt (knee) is not in the Yankees' starting lineup against the Cardinals on Friday. Per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Goldschmidt is dealing with a low-grade strain in his right knee, and that will keep the veteran out of the lineup for Friday's series opener. Cody Bellinger will serve as the Yankees' first baseman and bat in the cleanup spot while Jasson Dominguez, Trent Grisham and Jose Caballero man the outfield from left to right. An IL stint isn't expected for Goldschmidt, and he relayed that he should be available off the bench, per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Battling knee issue

Manager Aaron Boone said after Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Minnesota that Goldschmidt was unavailable off the bench due to a right knee injury, Max Goodman of NJ.com reports. The Yankees are still in the process of evaluating Goldschmidt's injury, but the Yankees believe that the veteran first baseman is dealing with a low-grade sprain, per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic. Boone suggested that a stint on the injured list could be in the offing for Goldschmidt, which would likely result in Ben Rice settling in as New York's everyday first baseman and Austin Wells regaining the primary catcher role.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Out of Yankees' lineup

Goldschmidt is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Twins. Goldschmidt had started both of the first two games of the series, but his playing time versus right-handers has been trending down in the second half. The Yankees will turn to Ben Rice at first base and Austin Wells at catcher in the series finale against Minnesota.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Giving way to Rice on Sunday

Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. After batting leadoff and going 1-for-4 in Saturday's 5-4 win while left-hander Framber Valdez started for Houston, the right-handed-hitting Goldschmidt will find himself on the bench Sunday for a third straight matchup with a righty (Jason Alexander). The left-handed-hitting Ben Rice owns a 223-point edge over Goldschmidt in OPS versus right-handed pitching on the season, so the former player could continue to be prioritized at first base in those matchups.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Sitting Friday

Goldschmidt isn't part of the starting nine for Friday's game against Houston. Goldschmidt is on the bench for a second straight game as Ben Rice fills in at first base. Goldschmit entered as a pinch hitter Wednesday -- the team's last game -- and delivered a solo home run. This is the first time the 37-year-old has been out of the team's starting lineup in back-to-back games since June 21-22.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Homers again Wednesday

Goldschmidt went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 3-2 win against Texas. Goldschmidt didn't start, as Ben Rice instead got a turn at first base. However, Goldschmidt was called upon to pinch hit in the seventh inning and came through with a solo shot to left field to provide what proved to be the winning run. The veteran slugger may be regaining his power stroke, as he has two homers and a double over his past three games spanning 10 plate appearances. Prior to that, Goldschmidt went without a long ball for 31 consecutive contests.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: On bench for series finale

Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers. Goldschmidt will get a breather after he went 3-for-8 with a solo home run, a double and three runs while picking up starts in the first two games of the series. Since the All-Star break, Goldschmidt is slashing just .224/.269/.347, and his struggles against right-handing pitching in particular throughout the season (66 wRC+ over 301 plate appearances) could eventually put him in danger of fading into a quasi-platoon with the left-handed-hitting Ben Rice, who will cover first base and bat second Wednesday.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Snaps homer drought Monday

Goldschmidt went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, a double and three total runs scored in an extra-inning loss to the Rangers on Monday. Goldschmidt led off the game with a 419-foot blast to left field. The long ball was his first since June 19 -- a span of 31 games. Goldschmidt batted just .212 with only six RBI during the long power drought, but he's continued to hold down a near-everyday role at first base of late, starting seven of the Yankees' past eight games.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Hitting bench Sunday

Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. Ben Rice will get the nod at first base Sunday, but Goldschmidt had occupied the position in five of the past six matchups -- all against right-handed pitchers. Though Rice has been far more productive against righties among the two players this season, Goldschmidt's longer track record of success in the big leagues has at least temporarily prevented him from falling into a pure short-side platoon role. Goldschmidt is slashing just .200/.256/.250 with a 37.2 percent strikeout rate since the All-Star break, however, and it's unclear how much patience manager Aaron Boone will exercise with the 37-year-old if he continues to languish.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Sitting against righty Wednesday

Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays. Goldschmidt has faded into more of a part-time role of late, as he'll hit the bench for the fourth time in the Yankees' last seven matchups with a right-handed starting pitcher. Ben Rice will get the call at first base Wednesday while the Rays send righty Zack Littell to the hill.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Sitting in second straight game

Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. For the second day in a row, the right-handed-hitting Goldschmidt will give way to the left-handed-hitting Ben Rice at first base and head to the bench while the Blue Jays send another righty (Chris Bassitt) to the bump. Though the Yankees won't completely close the door on having Goldschmidt play versus righties, he may have to settle for more of a part-time role in those matchups since he's produced a weak .246/.290/.333 (75 wRC+) over 271 plate appearances against them so far this season.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Exiting starting nine

Goldschmidt is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Toronto. It's Goldschmidt's turn for a day off after he had started each of the previous three contests. Ben Rice will cover first base and bat sixth for the Yankees.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Sitting Thursday

Goldschmidt isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mariners. Goldschmidt will get a chance to rest his legs Thursday after going 6-for-13 with two RBI and four runs scored across his last three games. His absence will give Ben Rice an opportunity to start at first base while batting sixth in the series finale.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Racks up three hits in victory

Goldschmidt went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI in a 10-3 win against Seattle on Tuesday. Goldschmidt scored New York's first run of the game in the fifth inning and stroked a two-run single in the seventh. He notched his fourth multi-hit performance over his past five contests, a span during which he's batting .391 with five doubles. The hot stretch comes on the heels of a rough 1-for-23 stretch to end the month of June. On the season, Goldschmidt is slashing .290/.349/.435 with eight homers, 34 RBI, 54 runs and five stolen bases over 347 plate appearances.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Not in lineup again Saturday

Goldschmidt isn't starting against the Mets on Saturday. Goldschmidt is beginning on the bench for the second time in New York's past three contests amid the team's five-game losing streak. The veteran first baseman has four hits (including three doubles) over his past three appearances, but the Yankees are going with Cody Bellinger at first base Saturday, while Ben Rice is occupying the DH spot.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Out of lineup Thursday

Goldschmidt is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in Toronto. Goldschmidt had started at first base in five of the past six contests for the Yankees, but he'll grab a seat for Thursday's series finale. Ben Rice is handling first base and batting second.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Sitting vs. right-hander Monday

Goldschmidt is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays. Ben Rice will get the nod at first base Monday while the Blue Jays send right-hander Max Scherzer to the hill. The Yankees aren't treating Goldschmidt as a pure platoon player, but his opportunities to play against right-handed pitching have been scaled back considerably following Giancarlo Stanton's return from the 60-day injured list June 16. Since that date, the Yankees have faced 11 right-handed starting pitchers, and Goldschmidt has been included in the lineup for six of those matchups. Both Goldschmidt (.273 wOBA) and Stanton (.299 wOBA) could be in danger of fading into part-time roles if the Yankees commit to open up steadier playing time for Rice (.379 wOBA) and Jasson Dominguez (.345 wOBA), both of whom have been far more effective against righties this season.
