Morton (7-10) took the loss Saturday as the Tigers fell 7-4 to the Angels, coughing up six runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out 10.
The veteran righty produced 21 swinging strikes among his 90 pitches (62 total strikes) and fired first-pitch strikes to 19 of the 22 batters he faced, but Morton gave up plenty of hard contact as well -- four of the seven hits off him went for extra bases, including homers by Jo Adell and Taylor Ward that accounted for five of the runs against him. Morton has served up seven long balls in his last five starts and 28.1 innings, a stretch in which he's stumbled to a 6.35 ERA and 1.55 WHIP despite a 29:12 K:BB. Morton's Tigers debut saw him turn in a good performance despite taking the loss in a 2-0 defeat. He's posted four quality starts over his last five outings, allowing 15 runs across 30 innings in that span, though seven of those runs came in a July 18 start against the Rays. Morton now has a 5.20 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 107:49 K:BB through 107.1 innings over 24 appearances (18 starts) between Detroit and Baltimore this year. He should get better run support with his new team, but the 41-year-old right-hander is still a risk for a bad performance here and there. Morton is projected to make his Detroit home debut against the Angels.

The Orioles will unload Morton after he put up a 5.42 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 101.1 innings across 23 appearances (17 starts). Despite the overall struggles as a starter, the 41-year-old could stick in the rotation for Detroit since he has a 3.88 ERA in his past 11 outings.

Morton rebounded from allowing a season-high seven runs in his previous start by delivering his fifth quality start of the season. The 41-year-old struggled a bit with his control, walking four batters, but battled through it to match his longest start of the season. The veteran right-hander has an unsightly 5.48 ERA on the season, but he has allowed more than three earned runs only twice in his last 17 outings. Morton's next start is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday against the Blue Jays, but with the trade deadline approaching, that could be subject to change.
