Jason MarquisThe team that employs Jeff Suppan is now taking a flyer on Jason Marquis.

CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reports that the Padres are close to signing the 33-year-old right-hander who was just days ago released by the Twins. Presumably, Marquis will be inked to a minor-league pact.

With the Twins, Marquis posted an ERA of 8.46 across seven starts and walked more than he struck out. Despite pitching the healthy majority of his innings in pitcher-friendly Target Field, he managed to give up nine home runs in just 34.0 innings.

In other words, it's hard to see how he's going to be any kind of an asset in San Diego. The Padres do have six pitchers presently on the disabled list, so that's likely the source of the desperation.
