Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton suffered a facial laceration requiring stitches, multiple facial fractures and dental damage, according to MLB.com on Thursday. He will return to Miami for further evaluation while the team will travel to Philadelphia to face the Phillies on Friday.
Stanton was in the midst of his best season in the majors, likely earning MVP consideration before getting struck in the face by a Mike Fiers pitch Thursday night. He batted .288 with 37 homers and 105 RBI over 538 at-bats. His status for the rest of the season remains uncertain.
