Bills' James Cook: Stellar night nearly ruined by fumble

Cook rushed 10 times for 121 yards and a touchdown and brought in his only target for seven yards in the Buffalo Bills' 37-34 overtime win over the Rams on Monday night. He also committed two fumbles, losing one.Cook put together another highly efficient night that saw him gain significant chunks of yards on multiple carries, and which featured his fifth rushing touchdown of the season on a 17-yard run in the latter portion of the second quarter. However, Cook dodged what would have been a major blemish on his night -- a lost fumble at the Rams' 20-yard line in overtime -- when Josh Allen subsequently mounted a successful game-winning drive following a blocked field goal by Buffalo's special teams. Cook will take 532 rushing yards and an average of 5.6 yards per carry into a Week 6 road matchup against the Raiders on Sunday.

Bills' James Cook: Highly efficient with 12 carries

Cook rushed 12 times for 75 yards and a touchdown and brought in both targets for eight yards in the Buffalo Bills' 29-26 loss to the Patriots on Sunday.Cook consistently ripped off productive gains on the ground against the Patriots' defense, with his longest run of the day going for a relatively modest 17 yards. Cook's overall rushing opportunities were still somewhat capped, and he finished with a new season low in carries. However, the talented back extended his streak of games with a rushing TD to three when he went in from eight yards out early in the second quarter. Cook has now averaged well over 6.0 yards per carry for three straight games and is up to 421 rushing yards and three scores on the ground heading into a Week 5 road showdown against the Rams on Monday night, Oct. 12.

Bills' James Cook: Another stellar effort in win

Cook rushed 24 times for 154 yards and a touchdown and failed to bring in his only target in the Buffalo Bills' 24-16 win over the Chargers on Sunday. He also lost a fumble.Although neither offense looked anywhere close to cohesive as a whole, Cook was a rare exception. The star running back delivered another dominant performance on the ground despite his day getting off on the wrong foot, as he lost a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and saw the Chargers parlay it into a touchdown. Cook's longest run of the day was a relatively modest 23 yards, meaning he consistently ripped off chunk gains against the Chargers defense. Cook also went in for his second touchdown of the season at a critical juncture in the fourth quarter, extending a 17-13 Bills lead with a three-yard run. Cook has quickly amassed 346 rushing yards at 6.0 yards per carry over his first three games, affording him an abundance of momentum heading into a Week 4 divisional home showdown against the Patriots next Sunday.

Bills' James Cook: Shreds Lions defense in win

Cook rushed 21 times for 135 yards and a touchdown and brought in one of three targets for four yards in the Buffalo Bills' 41-31 win over the Lions on Thursday.Cook repeatedly gashed a Lions defense that came in with a reputation for being stingy against the run, more than atoning for a lackluster Week 1 showing against the Texans just four days earlier. The star running back rounded out his fantasy night with the final score of the high-scoring clash for the Bills, recording a one-yard touchdown run with just under three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Cook's multiple explosive runs throughout the night served as a reminder of why he earned such lofty draft status this summer, and he'll remain a critical component of a juggernaut Bills offense in a Week 3 home matchup against the Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 27.

Bills' James Cook: Held in check by Houston

James Cook rushed 13 times for 57 yards and caught three of four targets for 12 yards in Sunday's 36-31 win over the Texans.Cook didn't find much room against Houston's stout front and took a back seat to Josh Allen, who had two rushing touchdowns and two touchdown passes. Allen's presence didn't stop Cook from rushing for a league-high 1,621 rushing yards during the 2025 regular season, so there should be better days ahead for Buffalo's shifty running back. Cook will have a short turnaround before Buffalo's home opener against the Lions on Thursday.

Bills' James Cook: Sits out preseason finale

James Cook didn't play during Buffalo's exhibition win over Pittsburgh on Thursday. The Buffalo Bills rested most of their projected regular-season starters, so Cook's absence was expected. The star running back finished the preseason slate having appeared in one game, logging 21 yards on five carries. Cook now will look ahead to Week 1, when he's slated to lead Buffalo's backfield against a tough Texans defense on Sunday, Sept. 13. Ray Davis is expected to work as his top backup.

Bills' James Cook: Quick start to preseason

James Cook carried the ball five times for 21 yards in Saturday's 29-14 preseason win over the Panthers. The reigning NFL rushing champ played the entire first quarter in the Buffalo Bills' preseason opener, and Cook's longest gain was a 13-yard scamper that helped set up a Keon Coleman touchdown. Josh Allen remains the focal point of the offense, but Cook proved last season that he can rack up elite production as well, and the fifth-year RB could see more receiving work in 2026 as new offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael adds some wrinkles to Joe Brady's scheme.

Bills' James Cook: Could get more passing-game work

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael didn't rule out the possibility of James Cook having more involvement as a pass catcher in 2026, Alex Brasky of SI.com reports. "Anytime you can get the ball in [Cook's] hands, you have an opportunity for a big play," Carmichael said Monday. "I think he can bring value not only in the run game but the pass game as well."Between 17 regular-season and two postseason contests in 2025, Cook took on 348 carries, handily surpassing his previous career high of 273 totes over 19 contests in 2023. The running back ended up leading the league in rushing with 1,621 yards, but head coach Joe Brady has already mentioned the possibility of taking some of that workload off the 26-year-old's plate. One way the Bills could limit the pounding Cook takes between the tackles without sacrificing his overall touches would be to increase his involvement in the passing game, where he's averaged 7.1 yards per target during his four-year career. Ty Johnson has carved out a role as a pass-catching specialist the past three seasons, but he exited Monday's practice with a knee issue. Cook may end up taking on more third-down snaps out of necessity if Johnson's injury lingers into the regular season.

Bills' James Cook: More balanced approach in 2026?

New coach Joe Brady acknowledged this week that James Cook's workload was high after the running back took 309 carries over 17 regular-season games, and the coach discussed the potential of sharing the load a bit more this season, Chris Brown of the Buffalo Bills' official site reports. Said Brady, "I don't think you ever go into each game with a mindset of, 'This is how many carries he's going to have.' But it does pile up throughout the season, and I give him a lot of credit. I would love to be able to get Ray (Davis), Ty (Johnson), Frank (Gore Jr.) those guys involved and I hope those opportunities come up this year. James was just playing at such a high level last year. And this year again we're looking at everything."Cook won the league rushing title last season, but it's worth noting the last five NFL rushing title winners have seen their totals decrease significantly the following season, and only two players this century (Derrick Henry and LaDainian Tomlinson) have won back-to-back titles. That's not to say Cook can't achieve high totals again, just that it's incredibly difficult to do so. In fact, his regular-season carries increased by 102 from a mostly healthy prior season. While Cook is an attractive fantasy option in this offense -- which hasn't changed much from last season and remains elite -- this is a team with its sights set on a deep playoff run, not winning another individual rushing title. Also, Brady might be inclined to throw the ball a bit more this season, as he's now the head coach instead of the offensive coordinator. The bottom line is that Cook is a great piece for any fantasy team, but the Bills may look for angles to work in his capable backups this season.

Bills' James Cook: Heads into Year 5 with Bills

During an appearance Tuesday on Good Morning Football, James Cook indicated that he's noticed a renewed spirit under the guidance of new head coach Joe Brady during the team's offseason, Bobby Kownack of NFL.com reports."It's just a new energy in the building," said Cook, who led the NFL last regular season with 1,621 rushing yards. "It's gonna always be like that, I feel like, when you have a new head coach coming in, a young one, too, at that. Joe [is] a young head coach coming in, his first year being a head coach. He's got new energy, that's how I feel like." While Cook didn't participate in any of the Buffalo Bills' voluntary work open to the media earlier this offseason, he did participate in the team's mandatory minicamp and is poised to be full-go for training camp. Looking ahead, the 2022 second-rounder remains entrenched as the lead option in a Buffalo backfield that returns last year's top backups Ray Davis and Ty Johnson. In that context, Cook -- who logged 309 carries in 17 regular-season games in 2025 -- should continue to maintain steady volume and reliable fantasy lineup utility this coming season.
