49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Pursuing return to NFL
Brandon Aiyuk is close to hiring new representation and is expected to file for reinstatement to the NFL in the near future, according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.Aiyuk, 28, made his last NFL appearance Oct. 20, 2024, when he sustained multiple ligament tears in his right knee and required season-ending surgery. Though Aiyuk has likely been fully healthy for several months, his future in football has been murky due in part to his acrimonious relationship with the San Francisco 49ers, who still hold his rights after placing him on the reserve/left squad list last December. GM John Lynch already announced back in January that Aiyuk wouldn't play for the 49ers again, but until the wideout formally files for reinstatement, he's unlikely to be traded or released. Aiyuk now appears to be willing to take that step, after previously indicating over the summer that he had no intention to apply for reinstatement.

49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Not an option for injury-plagued Niners
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday that he's not viewing Brandon Aiyuk as an option for the San Francisco 49ers while the club contends with multiple injuries at receiver, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. After undergoing surgery in October 2024 to address ACL and MCL tears in his right knee, Aiyuk is likely fully healthy at this point, but the mercurial wideout appears to have worn out his welcome with the 49ers. General manager John Lynch said in January that Aiyuk had played his last snap with the franchise, and little on that front appears to have changed in the ensuing months. The 49ers still hold the 28-year-old's rights after placing him on the reserve/left squad list last December, and he's already had his $26.66 million salary for 2026 voided since he failed to attend mandatory rehab sessions and meetings. In order to force his release from the 49ers, Aiyuk will need to formally apply for reinstatement with the league, but he indicated in a July 7 story on his personal Instagram account that he has no plans to immediately do so, per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com.

49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Remains on left squad list
San Francisco general manager John Lynch told reporters Saturday that Brandon Aiyuk (knee) will remain on the San Francisco 49ers' reserve/left squad list, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.Aiyuk is not on the 49ers' 90-man roster as the team opened training camp Saturday. Injuries and off-field issues had Lynch publicly state in January that Aiyuk will never play for the 49ers again, though it's unclear when a move to remove the veteran wide receiver from the team's roster will actually take place. Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million contract with the 49ers in August of 2024 but hasn't seen regular-season action since Week 7 of the 2024 campaign after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee.

49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Interested in joining Commanders
In a video posted to Instagram Wednesday, Brandon Aiyuk (knee) said that if the San Francisco 49ers released him, he'd sign with the Commanders "tomorrow," ESPN.com reports. That said, it's unclear whether the Commanders would have interest in signing Aiyuk in such a scenario. Moreover, it's not a situation they can publicly comment on, given that the wideout is still under contract with the 49ers. Back in January, 49ers GM John Lynch said that it was "safe to say that (Aiyuk) has played his last snap with the Niners." However, since then the team has held on to the 2020 first-rounder in the hopes of finding a trade partner. San Francisco's veteran players are set to arrive at training camp July 25, with the report suggesting that it's possible the team is waiting until then to make a call on Aiyuk's status with the franchise.

49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Issued arrest warrant for speeding
Brandon Aiyuk (knee) has been issued an arrest warrant on a misdemeanor charge of exhibition of speed by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office, David Lombardi of SFStandard.com reports.Aiyuk's warrant relates to a December video posted of himself driving nearby the San Francisco 49ers' stadium. San Francisco GM John Lynch said back in January that Aiyuk will not play for the team again, while head coach Kyle Shanahan said in late March during the NFL owners' meeting that the team is in "no rush" to release the wideout and would prefer to receive some form of compensation via a trade. The 49ers inked veteran wideouts Mike Evans and Christian Kirk in free agency to join third-year pro Ricky Pearsall, as well as selecting rookie De'Zhaun Stribling in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft at No. 33 overall. Aiyuk did not play in 2025 while rehabbing from ACL and MCL tears in his right knee that he sustained during the 2024 campaign, and he was placed on the reserve/left squad list last December.

49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Still likely to be released
The San Francisco 49ers are still expected to move on from Brandon Aiyuk (knee) but won't necessarily release him Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. With the 2026 league year kicking off Wednesday afternoon, San Francisco can now release Aiyuk with a post-June 1 designation that spreads some of the dead-cap charge to 2027. Multiple reporters, including Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com, have suggested that Aiyuk is likely to end up in Washington, where he'd reunite with close friend and former college teammate Jayden Daniels.

He'll likely get his wish in the coming weeks, with Lynch now confirming that Aiyuk won't be welcomed back to the team.

49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Done for 2025
The San Francisco 49ers placed Brandon Aiyuk (knee) on the reserve/left squad list Saturday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. The move means Aiyuk will not return for the rest of the season and will likely not be a part of the 49ers' plans from 2026 and beyond. Aiyuk has been recovering from ACL and MCL tears in his right knee that he sustained during the 2024 campaign, and it's unclear whether the 49ers will look to trade the 2020 first-rounder during the offseason or cut him from the roster outright.

49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Not ruled out from playing in 2025
San Francisco general manager John Lynch reiterated Tuesday that he's still "hopeful" Brandon Aiyuk (knee) will play at some point this season, though he acknowledged that he wasn't sure how realistic the wideout's return might be, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.Lynch noted that Aiyuk is continuing to take part in rehab work for the surgery he underwent last October to address ACL and MCL tears in his right knee, but the San Francisco 49ers have thus far declined to put out a target date for when the 27-year-old might be ready to practice. As David Lombardi of SFStandard.com suggests, the decision as to whether Aiyuk suits up in 2025 likely falls on the wideout's shoulders. While the 49ers would seemingly welcome him back if he's healthy enough to play, Aiyuk may not be as motivated to suit up after San Francisco voided approximately $26 million on his contract back in late July. Aiyuk is still on San Francisco's books through 2028, though the team will likely look to trade him this offseason if a suitor is willing to pick up most of his remaining salary. Releasing Aiyuk is another possibility, but the 49ers would incur a dead-cap charge of $29.585 million if he's cut outright without a post-June 1 designation.

49ers' Brandon Aiyuk: Not practicing this week
Brandon Aiyuk (knee) won't return to practice this week, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Aiyuk reportedly wants to sit out the rest of the season and then angle for his release rather than playing for the San Francisco 49ers after they voided guarantees in his four-year extension. The team, meanwhile, is hoping to get Aiyuk back on the field at some point this season, though it presumably wouldn't be until late December or January. It's unclear if Aiyuk would be considered ready for practice if not for his displeasure with the 49ers.
