  Verlander (hamstring/hip) threw off the front of the bullpen mound Wednesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Verlander has yet to log a true bullpen session since suffering a setback during his last mound session June 17, but Wednesday's round of throwing still marks progress from playing catch. It's unclear how far he is from getting back to throwing traditional bullpen sessions, but he'll likely have to do so within the next couple of weeks to have a chance to build up his workload and make a few more starts in what will be his final season in Major League Baseball.

  Verlander (hamstring/hip) has been playing catch daily, but he has yet to be cleared to resume throwing off a mound, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. While he hasn't been shut down from throwing, Verlander has been building back up slowly since sustaining a left hamstring strain in his most recent bullpen session June 17. The Tigers will have more room in their crowded rotation after dealing away Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize ahead of Monday's trade deadline, but Verlander may need to get back on a mound by the middle of August to have a realistic shot at getting stretched back out enough to handle a traditional starting role by the time he returns from the 60-day injured list. Verlander has already announced that he will retire at the end of the season, so the Tigers might be willing to let the franchise icon make some abbreviated starts down the stretch as a final sendoff, especially if they're out of playoff contention.

  Verlander (hamstring/hip) announced Wednesday via social media that he will retire following the 2026 season. Verlander addressed his playing future in a statement after MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced earlier Wednesday that the 43-year-old had been named a "Legend Pick" for the 2026 All-Star Game. The veteran right-hander will be honored in Philadelphia next week after being selected to his 10th All-Star Game, but he won't be active for the exhibition while he remains on the 60-day injured list after sustaining a left hamstring injury during a June 17 bullpen session. Verlander -- who was placed on the shelf April 4 due to hip inflammation -- has since resumed playing catch, but he's without a clear timeline to return from the IL. He'll look to move past his injuries over the next few weeks and attempt to make at least a few more appearances for Detroit before the end of the season as he closes the book on a 21-year Hall-of-Fame career. Verlander is the majors' active leader in games started (556), wins (266) and strikeouts (3,554).

  Verlander (hip) will return from the injured list to start Sunday's game against the White Sox, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Verlander threw 66 pitches in a four-inning sim game Monday without any problems, so the Tigers will allow him to return from the IL over the weekend and make his first start since March 30. The 43-year-old posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 10.2 frames during his rehab assignment at Triple-A, but he was lit up for five earned runs in just 3.2 innings during his lone MLB outing this season and is set to return against a White Sox offense that's posted a .777 OPS since the beginning of June.
