The Cubs designated Velasquez for assignment Sunday.
Velasquez will be cede his spot on the active roster to Jordan Wicks, who was recalled from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move. After being promoted from Iowa on Wednesday, Velasquez made one appearance out of the bullpen, tossing a scoreless inning Saturday.
