Pelicans' Bennedict Mathurin: Signs deal with Pelicans
Mathurin signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Pelicans on Wednesday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.
The deal includes a player option for the second season. Mathurin was previously a restricted free agent, but the Pelicans approached the Clippers about withdrawing the qualifying offer prior to this deal. In New Orleans, Mathurin is expected to be a key part of the second unit behind Trey Murphy and Saddiq Bey.

Clippers' Bennedict Mathurin: Path to minutes even tougher
The Clippers' acquisition of Max Strus adds another established wing while Mathurin's future with the club remains unresolved as a restricted free agent.
Strus can absorb minutes at both wing spots and brings shooting and playoff experience, potentially making the Clippers less dependent on retaining Mathurin. The move will make Mathurin a restricted free agent. The Clippers can match any offer sheet he receives from other teams, and they'll likely make every effort to retain him following last season's Ivica Zubac trade.

Clippers' Bennedict Mathurin: More competition in backcourt
Mathurin could be set for a reserve role if he remains with the Clippers in 2026-27 due to the selection of Keaton Wagler with the No. 5 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Mathurin operated almost exclusively off the bench for Los Angeles in 2025-26, making just one start after being traded away from the Pacers. The 2022 first-rounder is slated to become a restricted free agent, so the Clippers do have the ability to match any offer sheet he receives from other teams. If Mathurin sticks around, he'll likely be competing with Wagler and Kris Dunn for the starting spot at shooting guard during training camp in the fall.

Following his trade from the Pacers, Mathurin found some success in a bench role with the Clippers. He made 26 appearances (one start) and posted averages of 17.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.7 three-pointers in 28.0 minutes per contest. However, he struggled from the perimeter, hitting 20.7 percent from three-point range.
