Knicks' Jose Alvarado: Inks new pact with New York

Alvarado is declining his $4.5 million player option and intends to sign a three-year, $14 million-plus contract with the Knicks, Shams Charania of ESPN reports Friday.
After being traded from New Orleans to New York in February and winning a championship with the Knicks, Alvarado is set to remain in New York. The 28-year-old point guard will likely continue playing a meaningful role off the bench behind Jalen Brunson. Over 28 regular-season appearances (three starts) with the Knicks, Alvarado averaged 6.6 points, 3.8 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 16.9 minutes per showing.

Alvarado provided zero points (0-5 FG, 0-2 3Pt) and one rebound over 11 minutes during Saturday's 94-90 victory over the Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
Alvarado struggled to find his stroke in the championship-clinching victory while missing all five of his field-goal attempts, but he walked away with a title ring nonetheless. The energetic backup guard operated as a minor piece of the Knicks' second-unit rotation throughout the series, averaging 4.2 points and a quiet 0.2 steals across 12.0 minutes per game in the five matchups against San Antonio. After coming over from the Pelicans at the trade deadline, Alvarado spent the final months of the season in and out of head coach Mike Brown's rotation depending on the health of Jalen Brunson. Under contract for the 2026-27 season on a team-friendly deal, the 28-year-old will head into the summer slated to resume his role as New York's primary spark-plug defender off the bench.
Alvarado won't start Saturday's Game 1 against the Hawks, Kevin Chouinard of the Hawks' official site reports.
With Jalen Brunson (ankle) back in the lineup for the start of the playoffs, Alvarado will retreat to the second unit. Over his final six regular-season appearances off the bench, the 28-year-old point guard averaged 5.7 points, 2.2 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per tilt.

The Knicks are resting all of their starters except Mikal Bridges for Sunday's regular-season finale, so Alvarado will enter New York's starting lineup for the third time this season. Alvarado's last start took place April 1 against the Grizzlies, when he played 32 minutes and finished with 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block in a 130-119 win.

Head coach Mike Brown trimmed his rotation Monday, using nine players, with eight of them playing at least 19 minutes. Alvarado ended up losing hold of his spot on the second unit, with Brown leaning on Miles McBride and Landry Shamet as the team's reserve guards. Alvarado ended with 15 points (6-12 FG, 1-5 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, four assists, one block and two steals across 32 minutes during Wednesday's 130-119 win over the Grizzlies.
Alvarado moved into the starting lineup, replacing Jalen Brunson, who was ruled out due to ankle soreness. While this was an encouraging performance, it is likely that Brunson was merely getting some rest, given the opponent. Assuming Brunson returns for Friday's game against the Bulls, managers don't need to chase this performance by Alvarado.

This was a terrific showing for Alvarado in a very limited role off the bench. Miles McBride (pelvis) suffered a setback in the loss and will miss Wednesday's game against the Grizzlies, and Jalen Brunson (ankle) is questionable. That means Alvarado could be in line for a healthy workload against Memphis.
